Nova, Xavier ratings a great sign for FS1

Villanova and Xavier set a new record for a regular season Big East game on FS1, and made a lot of noise in doing so.

I'm glad it's not just me who thinks that the Big Ten might move some - or all - of their non-BTN games to FS1 in a couple years.

Did it outdraw the game that was on CBSSN at the same time?

It's doesn't add up in how ESPN2 is way behind ESPN this year. He didn't post the numbers, but they are lower this season in most games. Many games are getting around 200k to 300K.

ESPNU, ESPNews are with FS1, that's were the AAC plays it games with the 14 team TV crew.

CBSSN is not on the rating system by Nielsen.

I've been saying it for months.  The Big Ten rights are the last major television rights to come due in quite a while.  A lot of people are suggesting that they will sign with multiple outlets, which will give both some football and basketball games to FS1.  I think that would be incredibly helpful for this channel.

vs the Villanova-Xavier game, espn was airing a NBA game (Bulls/Wizards) which drew 944k.

espn2 was airing Mississippi St/Texas A&M which drew 282k
espnU had the Central Florida / Houston game which is listed with 28k(?) viewers.

Would Big 10 games on FS1 be good or bad for the Big East? Obviously it would be good for FS1. Is what is good for FS1 always good for the Big East?

Obviously the Big East cares about the viability of FS1, its patron. However, would sharing the network spotlight with the Big Ten mean more Big East games on FS2, or worse Big East time slots on FS1? Probably. Would it give the Big East less leverage and a smaller payout when signing the next TV deal? Probably.  I'm not sure I'm in favor of that...

I definitely understand both sides. While it would mean we are competing for time slots, it would also likely open up some college football games that would draw more eyes to the networks and its advertising. In addition, it would help make FS1 more of a viable mainstream option for casual fans, and possibly help us come conference play.

I'm all for FS1 picking up Big Ten football, and any major conference football for that matter. I'd rather not share the basketball spotlight...

Now, if we are still the primary basketball conference on FS1, and the channel picks up a handful of leftover games, while the Big Ten's primary basketball deal is still with ESPN, that's fine, as long as those games don't push the Big East to a bad time slot or FS2. I believe that is currently the case with the Pac12 and FS1.

There is no spotlight on FS1 basketball. Or it's a rather small one. Drawing more eyeballs to the network is a good thing. Double headers with the B10 is nothing but a positive.

If your in favor of the Big East, you want FS1 to get the Big Ten.

Odds are it's going to be a split with ESPN. So, if that happens you talking about hoops on ESPN, FS1 and BTN. Plus, I can't imagine the Big Ten not wanting to stay with CBS. So, it would be like two basketball games per week on FS1.

It would never happen, but I'd love to see what would happen if the games were reversed. Let's be honest, SMU/Memphis is a crap matchup between a team that's banned from the tourney and a terrible team whereas FSU/Duke is a decent game and the Blue Devils are always a draw.

I guess the late matchups are more comparable, but still a bubble team (Cal) against a bad one (UCLA) compared to a solid tourney team in Indiana, even if playing sub-par opposition. As a casual fan, the main network games are a lot more interesting.

I think a lot of people simply turn on ESPN and watch whatever is on.

If Fox gets some Big Ten games, I think that definitely decreases Fox interest in expanding the Big East.  There won't be a need for those extra Big East games.

Exactly, a test pattern on ESPN will outdraw whatever is on CBSsp, NBCsp and FS1.

This is not an insult to them, it is the reality of sports programming that needs to be broken.

(and it will as ESPN is losing subscribers by the millions as they charge too much and have a terrible cost structure which is killing Disney's stock, as discussed in the Superbar).

One of the issues with FS1 is that it is often not available in Hotels and other public venues. I was at a private club the other day that had a great sports bar and they did not have access to FS1 so the TV was tuned to a Duke game on ESPN and then later the Blackhawk game. I had to go back to my room and do Fox Sports Go to watch the Providence Seton Hall game.

When games are on the Fox Broadcast Network it is a very good deal. Unfortunately there are only 12 of those.

Out of curiosity, where was this? I've never run into this problem. I'm not a huge traveler but I've been a few places.

Agreed I've watched FS1 in Mexico and Europe with no problem at sports bars. If a sports bar in the USA doesn't have FS1, that's just not a very good sports bar.

That was just one example I used. There has been other games in the season that are much closer as in both ESPN and ESPN2 had both solid match ups and ESPN is way ahead in the ratings over espn2.

Another example that sticks out to me was on a Thursday night when Michigan State blew out Northwestern on ESPN and Oregon's classic comeback to end Arizona's long homecourt winning streak ended on ESPN2. It was like 900k on ESPN and 400k on ESPN2.

The old coach complained about the exposure of the Big East.

Just this week these ACC games were not to be found anywhere on National TV:

Louisville at Pittsburgh
North Carolina at NC State
Louisville at Miami

Maybe the ACC just hates Pitino.

Two streams of thought here:

I realize FS1 was just trying to get any sports in it's infancy, but I don't see a lot of cross pollination between Nascar and Big East Basketball.  I'd imagine the rednecks (and don't be offended, I is one, too... proud owner of several flannel shirts) click off when hoops comes on, and most hoops fans change the channel when Nascar comes on.

The other... that FS1 doesn't travel well.  I find the same, mostly, but was pleasantly surprised when in Indonesia and Singapore earlier this year to find Big East basketball on the S.E. Asia version of Fox sports!

I travel extensively and virtually all hotels I stay at have Fox Sports One. However, I have yet to encounter a hotel that has CBS Sports.

Many were complaining that they were stuck with NC State at Syracuse, instead of Louisville at Miami on the ACC Regional Networks on Saturday.
