Duane came up big down the stretch...what was it? Like 6 straight points from him? Where was that Duane in crunch time in some other games...
Agree on #2. I rarely jump on the "rip the refs" train, but Henry was abused all night.
Creighton now my second least favorite team in BE (the Hall are my least).
Hack all over the court sneakily then flail when they are fouled. Weak sauce.
Btw, whats the odds that someone in Zeirden's family is a meth head?
Duane won us the game when everyone else was capitulating. Kid should be options A, B, and C in the final two minutes.
Duane. EOS
Big win, but that zone killed us, too many turnovers again. We need to get much better at breaking the press. Agree with the bad officiating and creighton being a borderline dirty team.

Duane led down the stretch. No argument. He isn't afraid of the moment and is willing to take the ball at crunch time. It worked tonight. He has taken flack when it hasn't, but he has gotten right back into the saddle. But Henry had a better overall game. And if he had been able to get a bleeping call, he would have gone for 30.
for the 26th(?) time - exactly right on your observances....one tweak one add:
#2 - their bigs are not artistic but i wouldn't call them dirty. the technical could be a flopper out flopping a flopper
#9 - wow! the lower bowl in Omaha (Blue Vests?) clears out really quick
I compare Duane to Blue his sophomore year. Trying to step up in crunch time, sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Probably next year he takes that next step and becomes a star player.

I'm biased, I have a kid currently at Creighton and watch most of their games....but Creighton is far from borderline dirty. They just played a physical game tonight and refs allowed it. They have a great home environment and the program is on the rise...also I have seen them as a very good sportsmanship team.
That being said....woo....frickin....hoo!!!!! Way to go MU!

Not on defense. He was absolutely terrible in the post when Luke went out. Just painfully bad. Let both Groselle and Hanson get on his back shoulder literally every time down. The main reason it was close in the first was because of terrible interior defense. You can point to Luke not being in there, but for me it's far more on Henry for not stepping up.

Fair point. If MU would have lost, I probably would have been kvetching about Henry's post efense.
Creighton press bother us. It was a good learning experience for us, since we survived it. However, I do not want to play St. John's again, because overall St. John's is a lot quicker than Creighton.

Henry had a good offensive line tonight, but we really missed Luke on both ends. It's much harder to drive without Luke because Henry simply can't seal the lane like that.
Hank made up for it with his own scoring and mostly good shot selection, but we're a better team with Luke in there.
With another years experience we win that game going away. I don't know why Creighton doesn't shoot well against us but I'll take it.
The officiating was just terrible. The non-Travel (they pointed to the guy who traveled as having called the TO) if he had possession he traveled if he didn't have possession he can't call time out. Can't have it both ways unless you simply don't know the rules.
The Creighton bigs constantly foul when rebounding by backing over guys as they back out. Never called
Big Win. Saturday is going to be really tough now that Nova lost.

Hank cost us on D, like you say. Glad Creighton sucked tonight
It sure wasn't pretty. But Marquette toughed out a big win — beating a good, well-coached team in front of a big crowd. Loved every minute of it.
I love the growing rivalry with Creighton. Don't see them as a dirty team at all. I blame the roughness tonight on the refs. They let everything go and this was a very important game for Creighton. Mostly they let things go both ways, though.
I have visited most of the Midwest schools for MU games. Was in Omaha last year and have to say it's my favorite. Fans were very friendly, arena is great place to play and watch a game, city clean and attractive.
Good win. Good game by Wilson. It pains me to say that
Great game and a tough showing by Henry - who was abused all night - and Duane - who was clutch.
My theory on the refs is that - like most of us - they really didn't like Wojo much when he was a player so they take it out on MU. The officiating tonight was horrible and one sided. I grew to appreciate Henry's maturity because he was jumped on, undercut, and even tackled and he just kept playing. He didn't play any D because he saw what happened to Fischer as soon as he got close to a creighton player - it was a foul - so there was no chance Henry could play any D and stay in the game.
As an aside, I watched some Big 10 and ACC games last weekend and found the officiating about 100 times better than the big east. How did the BEAST get the dregs of the officials????
Anyway, GREAT win!

I mostly agree, but I can't say I loved every minute of it. It was a damn stressful game to watch as a fan. I was nervous as could be with 8.6 to go and us up six. I was even more nervous with us up 3 with 3.3 seconds to go.

My issue wasn't his lack of physical defense, it was his lack of positioning. He was never between his man and the basket, often drifting away so their bog was completely wide open. I expect him to get exposed on pick and roll plays or back door cuts, but tonight was really bad.
We missed not just Luke but also Heldt tonight. Still amazed we pulled it off.

Stressful, yes. Anxious, absolutely. But to me, watching a close game on the road against a tough rival in front of a sold-out crowd is way more fun than a blowout.
Somehow, despite all the mistakes, I felt like Marquette was sticking to its game plan, setting the tone/pace and controlling the game pretty much the whole way. Even when Creighton made its run, we stayed patient, didn't force up bad shots, took time off the clock and hung in there.
Only 2 other teams this season have held Creighton to fewer than 61 points. That was fun to watch.
I'll say this... Wojo doesn't do himself any favors when he blows a gasket after each missed call. K had the rep to get away with that, Wojo doesn't. He needs to learn how to effectively work the refs.
Wow ... after that game by Henry, we're actually bashing his D?
Luke was out with fouls and Henry had one. The last thing we needed was for him to get a second foul before the end of the half. I wouldn't be surprised if Wojo told him specifically to avoid a foul -- in other words, he'd rather give up the 2 points than get the foul. Coaches have to make that call all the time.
I'm absolutely not saying Henry was a defensive stud. He wasn't. He almost never is. But Creighton has a couple of tough, big bodies. They get some credit, too.
It was a nice win. Not only is any road win nice for MU but any win at all is nice for our boyz.
Let's enjoy the victories, people. And let's enjoy Henry while we have him. We won't see the likes of him again for some time, if ever.
The kid goes for 22 while being mugged all night, and grabs 10 boards -- all "easy," I'm guessing. He hits the huge jumper from the lane and the two clinching FTs. And his defense is what's on a bunch of Scoopers' minds?
I guess I'm just getting to be too damn positive in my old age.

3. I asked a ref recently--when a player goes to the ground(feet off the ground) with the ball at what point does the traveling occur? He said immediately. Zierdan should not be allowed to possess and make that pass.
2. I don't think Creighton is dirty--I think they are smart, traditional floppers--similar to another team I hate.
Early foul trouble---no Heldt I would say good job by Wojo getting enough out of Sacar and Wally to get to half.

Sorry, but I'm just not into the whole "he went for 22/10 so we can't point out his deficiencies" line of thinking. Henry was good on offense, good shot selection, but his defense was terrible.
If people want to make excuses for him, fine, but let's not pretend he played a perfect game at both ends because he didn't. He also caused us at least one turnover by failing to seal the lane.
All of this is okay. We won. He's a freshman. Lackluster defense and mistakes are understandable. But the day we aren't allowed to point them out? Come on...clearly the staff has pointed out his mistakes because his game has improved. No reason fans can't point out issues they see.

Why doesnt every team play a pressing zone against us? Got to work on that.

Fair enough. Here's the thing, I know I'm critical of Henry, often more so than other people are. But that's because for as good as he is, he could be so much better.
Slightly better positioning and timing on defense, better perimeter shot selection and knowing when to make the extra pass, and a little more muscle to rip away the contested rebounds.
BTW, not saying all his rebounds are easy. He positions himself to make them look that way. Just saying that despite being the most prolific rebounder in the league, he could be better.
I'd just like to see Henry maximize his talent. I suspect that won't happen here. He's good, probably first or second team All Big East good, but he's got the ability to be first or second in the National Player of the Year voting good. So I hold him to a higher standard. Because he's the only guy out there who can play at that level for us.

Nothing he did worked for me at all. There was one point where the game was going to a commercial break where he rattled off 4 or 5 inane cliches one right after the other. I was relieved when the commercial finally came on.
Doh! How is it that we haven't discussed how much better the transition defense was last night? Or how, for the second straight games, MU's bigs did a really nice job of hedging the high ball screens? And no, that isn't where Luke picked up any of his fouls.
One observation. Fischer simply has to be able to stay on the floor when Matt and Sandy are unavailable. I'm remembering a game in the last 2 weeks (maybe Creighton at home?) where he got 2-3 REALLY bad calls on fouls. But last night he pretty much earned every one and I believe they were all on the defensive end. 24 minutes last night really put pressure on his teammates.
Very happy with the win and how the team is coming along.
The only way you're going to get teams to stop pressing you is to make them pay when you break it. The big problem last night is that when we did break it, we were content to let them set up their zone and we ended up with 18 seconds to try and solve the zone and score every possession. Need to have a more attacking mind set against the press.
In addition to Henry's usual solid offensive game, I liked how JJJ and Duane played a lot. I love the aggressive attitude. I didn't think we missed Sandy all that much, other than for rest for the other guys.

We were fortunate that Creighton had an off night shooting and overall our defense was pretty good. They had a good strategy in that the first half was pretty up tempo and I think wore us out a bit given our short bench with Sandy out and Luke and Traci in foul trouble. Then late in the game they put on the full court press and went zone to force us to shoot long jumpers when we were dead tired. Almost worked perfectly for them.
JJJ had a very good first half

The announcers were terrible and made numerous mistakes. When Henry got the technical they never seemed to point out that when he reached his hand behind his knee and caught Zierden's face it was because the ball was between his legs. Henry kept explaining that to the ref and that's why it was such an awful call. The announcers never made the point. Then shortly after that Henry got tangled up with Groselle (I think) as he screened for the shooter and they both went down. They described it as Henry just shoving Groselle down and I believe even mentioned that it could have been another flagrant foul. Just awful lazy analysis that seemed pretty consistently pro-Creighton.

While I respect McDermott as a coach I doubt his switch to full court press was part of a pre-game strategy. Creighton wasn't making their shots and then came out in the 2nd half and kept turning the ball over leading to easy MU baskets. Creighton was on the verge of being blown out. They had to do something. So I think that McDermott out of desperation went to the full court zone trap and when you do that you typically go to a zone behind it. It worked and Creighton was having such a tough time scoring that he kind of had to leave it on. Due to the lack of experience at PG for MU I think some kind of press is almost always a good idea. Even better considering that Traci picked up his 3rd foul in the first half. I think the reason MU doesn't see more of this is that we tend to be behind and teams are less likely to use a high risk/high reward defense when they feel they already have the game going their way. If this team gets better as they seem to be getting we may see more of this over the next games if we are ahead. We have to no just beat the press but use it to create 3 on 2s going to the basket. Get Henry the ball behind the press and then drive towards the hoop with Fish available for a dump off or the trailing guards for an open 3. Success on that will pull a team out of this defense and we can't have them stay in it. We are too vulnerable.

Is there an announcer scoopers don't hate? Honestly the only one I can think of is Thomas Bilde and I think if we had to listen to him during real games where he has to be objective we'd hate him too.
Donny Marshall did a game earlier in the year--his insight was unlike any others I have heard this year.

Yep, that's the guy. Hadn't heard the name in a while, so I did a google search and it appears he got out of broadcasting in 2014. https://www.linkedin.com/in/mike-kelley-02828673
Tough being an MU grad but working at Creighton. That being said good win last night. The reality is we are just a good team in top third of the country. I was lucky enough to sit court side and there was excessive hammering on both ends. These twp programs seem to be on the same path and on par. Both need better recruits, CU has Marcus Foster red shirting who cam over from K State. We definitely need to bring either more Juco's or transfers in. seems top be our weak spot compare to other BE team.

Marquette recruits just fine. Recruiting has not been the problem.

The announcers were terrible and made numerous mistakes.
They were just plain awful. Solution to everything was "pound it inside!" You could have four guys open at the three point circle and they'd be screaming to pound it inside.
Where does CBS find these guys?

I haven't been running the premium advanced player stats this year. Supply is out on that.
All I have is some lower grade player sh*t, like ORtg trends.
The team stats are still high quality, though. I could probably hook that up.

I like Stephen Bardo. He's really good.

Wow ... after that game by Henry, we're actually bashing his D?
