Title: ESPN - Team from each Conference with Best Shot at FF
Post by: StillAWarrior on February 22, 2016, 09:16:16 AM
Interesting column (http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/14820599/the-floor-which-teams-give-conference-best-shot-final-four).  Although I'm annoyed by their comment on the last team from the Big East to make it to the Final Four.

How hard is this to understand? We're still the big east. We kept everything including the conference tournament history

We're overdue for another Benny posing as Medcalf super-troll

So our last Final Four teams were Louisville and Syracuse?

I get that we kept the name, but we aren't that league anymore, and there's nothing wrong with that. Part of me wishes we had let the American get the name, though MSG may have went with it.

I would agree with you but they said UNLV was the most recent MWC in the Final Four and the MWC did not exist in 1991... Clearly they're using some double standards there.

I wouldn't disagree. That's what ESPN does. Shoddy journalism is the name of the game.

Well, Louisville and Syracuse didn't make the 2013 Final Four as members of either the ACC or the AAC.

Technically, the "Catholic Seven" broke away, but they had to do it that way because there was no mechanism to force out the other five members - two of whom had already committed to leave the league.  We negotiated (and paid big bucks) to keep the name and (as TAMU points out) the conference tournament records, and MSG went with the new version as the site of its conference tournament.  Also, the current Big East has more members of the "old" Big East then any other conference got post breakup.  Legal technicalities of NCAA conference organizing aside, that makes us the current version of the Big East in my book.

Villanova made the 2009 Final Four as a member of a conference called the Big East, and they're still in a conference with that name of which 70% of the members were in the prior to 2013-14 Big East.  Do all of Villanova's pre-2013-14 post season records cease to exist?  At the very least Medcalf could have gone back to that.  After getting burned before for writing things that were flat out wrong, Medcalf has gotten more sophisticated in his knocks against Marquette, but I believe that that animosity is the more the source of his comment then any attempt to be factual.

Wasn't Butler in back to back Finals more recently than 2009?  If the A10 can use George Mason and VCU as the most recent schools that made a trip to the FF (both schools were in the CAA when they made their FF runs), stands to reason that the Big East could use Butler.

Has anyone really inspected the URL path that "StillAWarrior" originally posted?
That is definitely not the genuine espn.go.com site.

Benny got you all again.
I can't believe you fell for it.

ESPN was promoting the article on the front page of the official site earlier today, which is where I originally read it....
