Title: Does Tom Crean ever recruit out in the Baltimore/DC area?
Post by: baltimoremufan on December 16, 2007, 09:54:04 PM
If he doesn't, he should give it a second glance and a third and a fourth. The talent out in this area is fantastic. You have high schools like Mt. St. Joe (MD), Montrose Christian Academy (MD), Dematha (MD), Towson Catholic (MD), John Carroll (MD), Oak Hill Academy (VA), Gonzaga (DC), St Johns (DC), etc... Crean has a great eye for overlooked or unpublicized talent and the talent here definitely deserves that glance. Does he ever make it out this way?

I know it has been reported that Crean has looked at some John Carroll players at least that is what the Baltimore Sun reported and I think it was mentioned on an old post on muscoop.com. Side note saw John Carroll play Mt. St Joe this weekend and Isaiah Philmore (J.C. player and a possible MU recruit but he is only a junior) a 6'7 forward did an unreal 360 dunk. His team lost by 20 to Mt. St Joe led by Eric Atkins (A soph point guard who scored 28 points on previously ranked #24 in the nation John Carroll by Espn) and Henry Sims 6'11 center bound for Georgetown, who has a promising future, he dominated the paint and John Carroll's 7'4 Center. I mean the talent that has come from the Baltimore/DC area within just the last few years has been great: Carmelo Anthony (Towson Catholic for three years and then finishing out at Oak Hill Academy), Rudy Gay (UConn alumnus and a Spalding High School grad, MD), Kevin Durant (Montrose Christian Academy), Will Thomas (George Mason leader on the team that stopped UConns hope of a final four a few seasons ago). Just curious is all?

He does recruit the area, though not extensively.  MU recruited but did not offer David Diakite from Fort Washington, and offered Maurice Sutton(who likely won't qualify) from Upper Marlboro for the 2008 class.  They are in on 3 prospects in in the 2009 class, Philmore who you already mentioned, as well as two other 4-Star players, Andrew Fitzgerald from Owings Mills, Naji Hibbert from Dematha.

Mudimitri,

I want to thank you for your invaluable two cents. You continue to post excellent comments that are well constructed and well thought out.  I also understand that this topic must of struck a cord with you, especially if you had to respond at midnight. Work the next morning must of been rough.

Secondly, Ray Ray is the # 3 best tackler in the league (according to espn), while Chris Urlacher is #18. The Ravens did play poorly yesterday but they have a superbowl win within the last 7 years. It must also be difficult for you to continue to see #4 dominate the NFC North, it must bring up childhood, young adult, and adulthood memories.

Finally, in the future lets keep this about basketball.

Isn't Frank Ben-Eze playing out in the Baltimore area? Or, is he nearer to DC?

I think the focus is on the NYC metro area but you'll see him dip elsewhere out east little by little (Maryland, Massachusetts, Upstate New York, etc.)

Coobey.

Great point NYC is left untouched and also needs to be capitalized on. St. Benedicts (Newark, NJ) just beat Oak Hill Academy (VA) a few days ago.  Ben-Eze plays at Bishop O'Connell in VA, a small catholic school outside DC but yes definitely close enough.

Untouched?  You do realize that MU already has two players from St. Benedicts on the roster, as well as one player from Blair Academy and another coming in from St. Anthony's.  MU is recruiting the premier schools in that area all the time and getting players from them every year for the last 4.

It is still a new scene for Marquette in my opinion. Yes it has expanded within recent years due to Marquette inception into the Big East but it still should grow.

As a recent transplant to Baltimore from Milwaukee, I am impressed by the number of MU games on MASN (Mid Atlantic Sports Network), b/c MU is in the Big East (the UWM and the UVS games).  Combined w/ ESPN and other national TV spots (& a #10 ranking), I'd say that MU's profile out here is pretty good given that it's in Milwaukee.

...that being said, there are some big-time programs competiting for Washington/Baltimore talent (G-town, Syracuse, Villanova, U of Maryland, U-Conn)

How old are you "MR. HAYWARD"? Because your grammar is terrible. I'm guessing 4th grader who's an MU fan and found our site. What do you guys think?

Who cares about Mr. Hayward's grammar? I dont. There should be no red pens to correct him. Secondly, the Mr. Kotter picture is great. What a terrific show.

I'm sure Tom Crean and every other college coach in the country is well aware of the great talent in the DC/Balt. area. But with Maryland and the rest of the ACC schools right in the neighborhood, plus G'town, that's pretty stiff competition. G'town's top two freshmen this year, Austin Freeman and Chris Wright, are from DeMatha and St. John's/DC., both members of the Washington Catholic Athletic Association.  Must be nice having high school All-Americans playing just outside your front door.

Its not just the grammar wtf does DJ coming from Richmond have to do with recruiting in Baltimore/DC???

The key is to re-establish that presence. MU had it with Al and Crean has made it a priority. The connection is that recruits' parents are of the age where the Marquette name means something and the now with Big East membership the recruits themselves are able to easily see Crean's teams play.

The 800 pound recruiting gorilla in the DC area in University of Maryland.  While you could easily make the argument that Georgetown has a better, more storied program, the fact that it's a smaller, private, Jesuit school without football makes recruiting a little more difficult for them.

Hmmm, kinda sounds like the situation for 2 other schools I know.

I thought it was a sarcastic response, playing dumb, confusing Richmond, IN for Richmond, VA.

Could be wrong, though.

You could be right... other posts don't necessarily support the sarcasm though. He def did not confuse Richmond IN for Richmond, VA... the quote says "he got DJ at of Richmond, Indiana"
