Title: Basic Question re: Kenpom
Post by: BM1090 on February 02, 2016, 07:26:18 PM
Do teams that you play in non conference continue to affect your "ranking" throughout the year?

For example, LSU is beating Auburn by 17. LSU was projected to beat Auburn by 5. As a result, LSU's Kenpom "ranking" will go up. Since LSU's ranking goes up, and Marquette's win will be against a team that is now higher ranked, does our adjusted efficiency (and therefore, our ranking) go up because our opponent is now ranked higher?

Thanks!

Yes, they continue to have an effect the RPI.However, I am not sure it matters, if you win by 1 or 20.

No. It won't be affected by an opponent's ranking. It's based on their adjusted performance against competition.

...maybe these will help? At the end of the day, any ranking system isn't basic and quickly illustrates flaws...

I'm among those who never realized that Pomeroy rankings include a "recency" factor.

Does the same hold true for Sagarin?

Yes Sagarin does.  Before I knew this I was always amazed when I looked at the Sagarin rankings AFTER THE SEASON versus others and how good he was at predicting the winner.  I then used his system to pick my bracket one year and got slaughtered.

Then I found out about the "recency" scam.   ?-(
