Title: Wojo's Post Game Comments
Post by: Tugg Speedman on January 09, 2016, 03:28:18 PM
"This team grew up in the second half."  (recall he said they "played young" in the second half of Seton Hall).

Homer asked what was different about the second half as they scored 50 points.  First thing Wojo said without hesitation ... "on offense we were playing in front of our bench and we could help them."  He said they were very rushed in the first half on the other end.

Teams that are grown up don't commit 11 turnovers in the 2nd half. We lack leadership on the floor.

Teams that are grown up

The team is by no means grown up.  But it it might have "grew up" a little in that game.

Wojo did not say they were all the way grown up.   The grew up some this game.

That was my bad wording above.

That's why Traci has to eliminate the bad turnovers. And why he is so key to our success. It's no accident that his best half in BE play was also the team's best half.

Haanif is not a PG. He is a wing who will need to develop a mid-range game. Doesn't need to be great, but has to have it. It doesn't hurt to pull up for the 8 footer on drives once in a while.

Correct, but that's why he said grew up, not done growing.  They came back to win a game they were losing in the first half.  Part of that requires maturity and growing up.

They have a lot of growing up still to do.

Actually Henry led the team in TOs with 6. Ellenson has an outstanding ceiling but he has a lot to learn about the game. As a freshman, that's understandable but too often it seems he decides what his play is regardless of circumstances. This team is at its best when Wojo's game plan is followed.

I agree with the first sentence.  I disagree with the second.  Both Traci and Duane seem to be leaders.  Both are on the floor in crunch time and both played well down the stretch.  But they are a freshman and sophomore respectively.  Just wait until two years from now...or next year...or even the end of this year.

Agreed. We might be lacking the experienced leadership. But we are not lacking leadership in general.

There is obviously a reason we are finding. good success winning games late ever since Belmont.

Kids don't grow up to adults overnight.

Well, I suppose if you're a deadbeat dad, they do.  Or Tim Maymon.

Per Matty V., 16 of MUs 20 TOs were from the three freshmen.  They don't lack leadership, they lack experience.

Several of the turnovers came from offensive fouls, which seemed to be the refs emphasis in this game. Haanif had two turnovers where he started his drive before dribbling. That comes from being inexperienced. Maybe Carter's worst play ended up with a basket by Ellenson. Carter came down the court and lost controll of the ball. It almost went out of bounds and somehow Carter managed to get the ball to Ellenson under the basket. I said to wife that our best offense might be convincing St. John's we have no idea what we are doing.
