Happy New Year Air Force...enjoyed the flyover yesterday even if the game was a total ass whipping of the Big Ten (which was fine by me).
4th or 5th time I've seen it, first time was at the Super Bowl in 2001. Never gets old.

that never gets old. i was at lambeau field when they did one of those. don't remember if it was a 3 or a 5 jet display, but you have to give the ole sphincter a little extra b/c you've got a whole game to watch yet
so the californians were cool with it??

Californians were cool with it. Remember, the Stanford fans are doers, Ronald Reagan Heritage Foundation types. They get it. Iowa fans, definitely get it. ;)

oh yeah, i was probably thinking more along the lines of the berkeley crowd. you guys still do have your pockets of "cool people" though
When it flies that low, what a spectre of doom!
At the end of the video, was the dot the sun's reflection or a laser pointer?
Love the Stanford Band and their trolls!
Iowa had nothing on this team that day. So, fairly enough, the vitriol spilled over to the band.

The band was a joke even before the game. They came out in the pregame playing and their announcers started to talking about how Iowa paints the visiting locker room pink, then making it this gender equity argument. People in the stands were just saying what a complete joke there were. I get it, that's what they do and they got exactly the response they wanted. But no class at all. The cow tipping stunt at halftime and farmersonly.com stuff from the announcers, it was not gracious at all, and totally beneath what the Rose Bowl is supposed to be about. Stanford alums were cringing.
The dot on the video I assume was just some artifact from my iPhone from going from sunlight back out to non-sunlight, but I'm not sure.

I sh1t you not but I get a lump in my throat whenever I see a fly by during the National Anthem. Personally, i prefer a four ship of warthogs flying a battle box but the B 2 is a really awesome airframe. Anything that can fly halfway around the world then dump 40 tons of shock and awe on the bad guys is good in my book.
Looks like that was your own video. Thanks for sharing that with the world. America is just such a great country.

Yes, that was my video. I love flyovers as well. Have enjoyed some amazing ones over the years due to my good fortune of attending some of the best sporting events (World Series, Indy 500s, Super Bowls, BCS Championship game, etc, etc). I absolutely love them. Have been lucky to capture a few over the years. A few Stealth flyovers, some Helis, most have been the Globemaster III which are made not from from here. We live only a few miles from Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base, so we get everything from Air Force One in here to all kinds of cool stuff for Angels games, Rose Bowl, etc.
A few that I've recorded with my kids, wife, friends (they're usually in the background commenting)

The thing that always amazed me about the Stealth Bomber and the fighter, how quiet they are. Imagine that thing at night, black of night, barely any sound, no radar signature. Scary
great stuff chicos-i'll bet seeing those live is no comparison to the video. keefe would know this, but whatever flew over us at lambeau, came out of nowhere and just exploded over and past. sucked the wind right out of ya...in a good way. it's got to make one think twice about being on the wrong side
I was bird hunting in Easter Montana a few years ago and we were out in the middle of nowhere walking after the dogs when the stealth bomber flew over us at a very low level (lower than the Rose Bowl it seemed) Scared the cr@p out of us because we heard nothing just a big shadow and vroom!
Talk about an experience. Got choked up watching it fly over Pasadena as well

This is a true story. A buddy of mine flew Bones (B-1, get it?) out of Ellsworth AFB in SD. They often flew low levels at night over I 90 to get a response out of the truckers. The truckers would get excited, thinking it was a UFO. The Bone crews would listen in on HF CB as the truckers talked about the mysterious space ship flying around South Dakota. After a few passes the Bone guys would start talking on the CB freq claiming to be aliens. Never failed to get a reaction.
We often saw hikers in the Cascades and Rockies. Without fail they will jump up and down and wave their arms wildly; fact is we can see them long before they know we are there. And without fail we will give them a wing waggle.
when i'm in lake havasu city, i hear a lot of stuff flying, but have to really work to see them. what are those and where are they coming from? either san diego or nellis? they sound like rockets(hey, that's me!) echoing off the mountains between california/actual lake havasu and the range east of the city.

Went to one Rose Bowl - Michigan over UDub. Fantastic place. No such thing as a bad seat.
Most people don't realize that the Chair Force and Navy/Marines use the fly overs as practices for navigation and bomb runs (precise "time on target" practice). Notice the B-2 shows up over the field exactly as the last note is played and held and is beyond the field just as the note finishes.

I'm sure they saw us as we were walking sagebrush with about 30 miles of nowhere around us. still get a thrill thinking about that event
Not funny, possibly interesting story.
It's June 18th, 2015, and I'm in my remote office in far northern Illinois. The area is completely dominated by gravel pits and lakes.
Suddenly, I hear three bangs that sounds like three trucks simultaneously rolled over in the yard. I look out my windows and nothing.
I go over to my plant that has 360 degree windows and the plant guys are moving about, following something in the windows.
What we had was three F-15s (I think) playing around the airspace. They were looping, rolling and what I'd consider to be casual jagging around.
They stuck around for about 20 minutes and bugged out.
I went back to my office, where I had the Blackhawks parade on the T.V. Then within 45-60 seconds of walking inside, three F-15s showed up over the rally.
Pretty cool stuff.
couldn't find keefe's thread-
did you hear anything about the student pilot crashing an F-16 in baghdad, az? i'm in lake havasu city right
now and was wondering what all the noise up above was? more than usual. man, those things fly(no pun
intended) you can hear them like they are right above you, but really hard(if at all) to actually see them. the
sound just echos off the mountains and swirls around. i can understand how that could fudge with your head
out in the field of battle. i'm assuming the next thing ya hear is oh....kaboooom! havasu about 60 miles due
west of baghdad as the crow flies.

keefe if you are out there anywhere-just wondering?
also noticing 2 single prop planes flying in formation right over me at no more than 500 feet (that's about the minimum altitude, right?) multiple times per day. they are pretty fast little sons of beaches too. just wondering if anyone is familiar with what those are? and if there is anything going on. been here for 6-7 years and have never seen these guys before. plus a little more whirly bird activity-could that be due to crash out of baghdad?

The air space around where you are at is a target rich environment - there are F 16's out of Luke, Hill, and Tucson Int'l, A 10s out of D-M, and pretty much everything flown in the Free World out of Nellis. Lots of restricted airspace over Nevada which has a lot of live fire ranges so it draws training missions like spandex on a Kardashian.
If you heard a kaboom it could have been a number of different things depending on the kaboom but it likely wasn't the ROC Falcon Driver who augered in 60 nm from where you are swilling beer in the desert.
Enjoy the show out there. I miss ripping along at the speed of heat.

the kaboom i was referring to was in the heat of battle as in desert storm-if all you hear is the jet, the next thing you may hear can't be good. that's why i think their hats may come in handy you can rarely see them because of the speed, altitude, dust and sun glaring off the cirrus clouds-and if you are al queda or isis, that's got to play with your head.
i personally haven't heard any explosions of any sort, thank God. it is fun trying to find and follow the flights of those f-whatevers though. we could do a non-stop national anthem out here on some days. my neighbor says she tries to show her ta-ta's whenever a low flyer comes through-damn, i should have enlisted in the air force when i was knee high to a grasshopper. i heard the views are pretty good-heyna?

Could be any of a number of things. Odd that they are form flying but that could be some guys joy riding.
Here in Seattle, Paul Allen has a private collection of WWII aircraft so it isn't unusual to see a three ship of a Mustang, Spit, and Zero form flying at 500' off the deck. Those old pistons have a unique sound so you always know that it's a warbird rather than a Cessna fly swatter.
As for women showing their wares...whenever you see a boat it is always worth dirtying up to bleed off airspeed...the sights can be magnificent!

That's awesome. I never tire of watching them.
I'm assuming that was pretty heavily edited. I wonder how long they actually were in the air.
how do they communicate to each other to allow them to fly in such tight formation? i'm thinking there are coordinates, speed, altitudes, etc to lock in to? just curious. then how would you take into account turbulence?
why did they have landing gear and tailhooks out while they appeared to be cruising as opposed to readying for landing?
what would a decent, but not super expensive flight simulator cost for a home hobby thing? i messed around with one years ago on an old computer, but never really got the hang of it. now, i'd like to look into it as i'm starting to have a little more free time

Yes, so I've read. Though I hear the Navy is the worst in this area....ruthless.
Read this not long ago from an A-10 driver.
Every community and service has its own traditions, so I will only speak for the A-10 community. I've seen a naming in an F-16 squadron, but I won't say I'm an expert at their process by any means since it seemed very odd, overly complicated, and the person being named was able to play a part in what they were called (what?)
We keep it easy: on a Friday after the new pilot (or FNG) has been in the squadron for a couple months we'll have a Roll Call. Roll Calls should have their own story, but the short of it is: we all get together to call the roll, tell stories, recall some history and drink.
After everyone is good and ready we'll kick the FNG out of the room and proceed to tell stories about how he screwed up, did something unprecedented, or how his last name deserves a callsign that fits, i.e. Smith gets "Smitty", or some other appropriate match that makes sense. There was a trend of callsigns becoming acronyms, (DICE='Dropped It Close Enough), MEAT='Missed Excessively At Twelve' are a couple that come to mind) but that trend is fading and more traditional names have been used lately (Chip, Satan, Brewha, Hummer, Splash, Nightmare, etc).
We aren't as unforgiving as our Navy brethren. Their names are famously brutal, so hopefully a Naval Aviator can pipe up and give us their explanation!
There are very few rules for what a name can be, as far as it passes the "Nellis Bar Test"--the name can be screamed across the Nellis Bar without making people wince--and the commander approves.
After we all agree on a name by cheering for the winner, we bring the FNG back into the room, tell him/her their name, and then drink some more. As soon as you've flown in combat, or along the DMZ in Korea (a caveat necessary due to the amount of time us A-10 drivers spend doing that) your name sticks and you can't be renamed...unless you do something that can't be overlooked. Examples are few and far between...except for "Tucker"...

Never got to the naming stage, but it is 100% brutal and you never, EVER ask someone how they got their call sign unless it comes up in their side of the conversation. Besides if you ask someone how they got their call sign, either from their mouth or someone else's in the squadron it will be 137% BS.

When a 2LT or freshly minted 1LT shows up in the squadron he wears the FNG (f#cking new guy) patch on his flight suit while drinking from the FNG coffee mug until he earns his call sign. Once a call sign is assigned it usually sticks for life unless the owner does something incredibly spectacular to cause his squadron mates to assign a new call sign to commemorate that moment of brilliance.
There are some classics out there but some of the guys I know personally include 'Clete' Torres, 'Dirty' Sanchez, 'Sportin' Wood, 'All Beef' Franks, 'Horse' Koch, 'Scrow' Thom, 'Ima' Cummin, 'Itchy' Rash, 'Test' Ickles, 'Skid' Marks, 'Skid' Roe, 'Paps' Speer, 'Long' Wang, 'Giver' DeKok, 'Frumby' Hein, 'Stinky' Colon, 'Harry' Croutsch, 'Pan T' Shields...

Saw in my hometown newspaper that a local boy was flying one of those jets. Very cool for a Broncos fan, I'm sure.
I think you are originally from Colorado? My condolences. Capt. Kuss was tragically killed today in practice.

In a very strange coincidence, one of the Air Force Thunderbirds also crashed today, but the pilot survived.
