1. So many missed bunnies.
2. So lazy on defense for 30 minutes.
3. We keep winning, but are we sure Traci is the best point?
4. Henry is really good. Don't even notice double doubles.
5. Nine in a row, but....
6. MU has to start playing 40 minutes.
7. Acknowledging my pessimism, but conference play could be a slap in the face if the team doesn't pick it up.
My hope is that today was the kick in the pants the team needed. Maybe the win streak has gotten them a little big-headed, or they didnt think PC would put up a fight. Who knows.
Regarding point guard, when we get seriously pressured by high major guards Traci will be the key. Cheatham cant handle the pressure and it takes Duane away from his strengths. Traci still needs to be the point for 20-25 mpg
That was ugly.
Wojo should convince #3 to transfer to MU. That guy can play and is only a sophomore.
Easily the worst effort since Iowa.
We won by 18. Line was 17. Played poorly but still beat the spread. Thats encouraging.
Presbyterian had their best three point shooting game in a long time. They have shot 23% on the season
It's nice to have two good bigs. Makes games like this ALMOST unloseable. For Luke and Henry, rebounding and blocking shoots was like 8th graders playing with 5th graders.

In all these cupcake games somehow we make all of them look like Great 3pt Shooters. Do/will we have trouble fixing this?

Which means that MU's 3 pt defense was deplorable. Agrees with the eye test.
MU won this game because it had two guys much bigger than any opponent. Henry and Luke combined for big numbers but looked like crap doing it. That luxury ends now. If MU does not find some intensity and half court offense by Wednesday, the Golden Eagles will be in for a rude awakening.

Box score. Won this game on rebounding, blocked shots, and free throws.

With regards to #3...absolutely if we are playing against a team that has any kind of pressure or non-pack it in zone.
I chalk a lot of up to a young team playing a schedule that is opposite of what you would want for a young team. Emotional win against a rival on the road, week off and finals, play a cupcake after 9 days off, Christmas break for 6 days(including going home) then play a very bad cupcake. Very tough for a team to get up for those games especially since most of them have never been in this type of environment before.
Not making excuses just pointing out the context, I have confidence they will show up for conference season.
I completely agree about this looking like a young team with a lot of time off after an emotional win. The problem is that play time is over. And this is still a young team that has to go out and win a conference game on Wednesday. Wojo has a lot of work to do.
The team was not hitting on all cylinders today. I believe they will regroup and refocus properly for the next game.
I am concerned about Traci. He is a good long term solution at PG but I believe the Big East intensity is going to take some time to get used to. Right now we don't have any other alternatives. There will be growing pains, but the basic talent is there.
Theoretically, Duane should be able to play the PG position, but he has not embraced it and seems to be doing well in his current role .

I don't really believe in three point defense. Theres only so much you can do. Most of it comes down to if they are hitting them or not.

I don't really believe in three point defense.
Neither did Marquette today.
I got the feeling that we are kind of right back where we were at the IUPUI game. Poor entry passes, defensive lapses, Traci mental lapses, Henry content to hang out on the perimeter and shoot 3s. I'm afraid that the Tee Shirt mentality after the Iowa game as worn off. Good to hear that Wojo was pissed in the post game interview. This young team is going to require Wojo to pull a lot of strings and keep the pressure on. If he can get these guys to finish in the top 5 of the BE we will have learned a lot about our coach.
Today was a set-up for a lousy effort - Holiday, don't know what the practice schedule was, poor opponent, etc. It was probably especially easy for MU to come out with a sub-par effort because they are so young/inexperienced. Woj was right on regarding his TO comments.
They've been popping down the cupcakes, but Wed. will be a pork chop at least. SHU looked good vs. Wichita and have some guys that can play and who will compete. I'm sure MU will come out with a better effort.
Gotta admit, I too am concerned about how Traci will fare against the better athletes he's going to be seeing in the BE. I wouldn't be surprised if he needs help/relief from time to time. Will be interesting to see how things develop.
The schedule was designed to get these guys used to winning. In that regard, mission accomplished. The best thing for us would probably be a tight win against Seton Hall to remind them that in the Big East you need to do more than show up.
Here's hoping they keep on winning and the scheduling plan worked.

Most of those had a hand in the face. Not anymore that you can do. They just happened to fall for them.
Like all the other cupcakes, my only takeaway is we got a win.
10-2. 9 in a row.
Time to get this win streak into the double digits.

I was surprise no fouls were called against Marquette.
WoJo was not happy with the play today. No energy. I thought defense was terrible, lazy on rebounds and 50/50 balls, too many 3s against this team. We got free throws because they fouled us almost every time we drove to hoop.
All and all, a win. But ugly.

We won, nobody got hurt. Nothing to look at here, just a bad schedule with the holidays, you guys are really undetestimating the imporance of a routine in highly competetive atletics. Move onto Seton Hall.
First and only game I'll make it to this season, and now that I've seen them live I have a few questions:
1. What do we do when we play a team that is GOOD at shooting 3's?
2. What do we do when our bigs have to play against bigs?
3. What do we do when we play against real PG's?
4. When do we learn how to play against zone?
Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Wojo fan, but this team needs to play it's best ball to go .500 in the Big East. I also was pleased that Wojo was upset in the postgame interview. He should be. Team played poorly.
Also, no-one yet has given credit to Presby... they had a good scouting report and played well to it. What's the scouting report:
- take the 3... the close out will be late
- swing the ball... the rotation will be late
- get at least one offensive foul on Henry
- get low when boxing out Luke. Easy to move him.
- quick double teams from behind when a defender is in the passing lane for the outlet pass.
- TC won't shoot
- help on the entry pass (from behind - as above)

For questions 1-3, go and watch the Wisconsin game. We did fine.
How many Big East teams play a lot of zone? I haven't watched much of other teams. Xavier plays a 1-3-1 pretty often. Butler, Georgetown, Providence, and Nova I haven't seen play any. Don't recall SJU, Creighton, SHU, or DePaul playing much in past years.
I don't know how many times I'll have to say it. We're young. You won't see the same team twice this season until at least Big East play, and probably not all season. Sometimes that's a good thing, and sometimes that's a bad thing. Today that's a good thing. We started off losing at home to an okay Belmont team, going to OT at home to a bad IUPUI team, and getting SMOKED to a solid Iowa team. We've ran off 9 straight wins since then.
If people think they can look at one day's performance from this team and project what we're going to do going forward you're wrong.
We have the talent and size. We don't have the experience. Last year we had the experience but not the size and talent. I'll take my chances with having the talent.

I don't like excuses, but I pretty much agree with this.
I draw absolutely no conclusions or even reasonable guesses from today's game. None.
I'm glad the season starts for real Wednesday.
My hope for this game was a win and no injuries. With all the breaks, we will be back in a rhythm for Seton Hall. I think being a young team, we play down to the competition. I think we will be much more focused for the Big East.

? Not a lot of hands in the face--you might be thinking of the last game. Today we were slow on rotations and a lot of open 3s.
A lot more we can do other than saying not much we can do about it.

Out of sorts because of the break, with another cupcake served up. Not much gained from this one.

Duane Wilson flourishing in the "Vinnie Johnson" role for Marquette. Averaging 12.6 PPG off the bench. Adds experience & explosiveness.
