Title: ESPN 30 for 30 "The 1985 Bears" Janaury 28, 2016
Post by: Tugg Speedman on December 16, 2015, 10:10:52 AM
January 28, 2016 is the 30th anniversary of the Chicago Bears Superbowl victory.

That night ESPN will debut a new "30 for 30" called the "The 1985 Bears"

Here is a sneak peak

http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=14352133

(If you have not watched this series, they are all usually very good.  I often find myself watching episodes I'm not that interested in just because they are done so well.)

It's all the Bears got left - memories.

Oh, and Cutler.

Finally someone is telling the story of the '85 Bears.
Long overdue.

What ever happened to their coach?  Ditka?  I never seem to hear about him.

January 28, 2016 is the 30th anniversary of the Chicago Bears Superbowl victory.

January 28 is 30 years and two days after Super Bowl XX.  It is, however, the 30th anniversary of the Challenger explosion, which I watched live as a 3rd grader.

Greatest, underachieving team of all-time.

F' the Bears

That's pretty much what most teams have done to them the last few years.

Agreed.

They're a huge reason why I loathe the Bears

Greatest single season team of all-time but, unfortunately, you're right too (GB fans know about underachieving teams  ;)). The mid-80s Bears were an incredibly underachieving team. They had the best team in the NFL for 3-4 years.

Haven't there been great teams that never won a single Super Bowl or championship in their sport?

I mean, the Cubs of Santo, Jenkins, Williams and Banks had four Hall of Famers and several very good role players and never even won a pennant.

How about the great Dodgers teams of the 40s and 50s that couldn't beat the Yankees?

How about the 60s/70s Vikings, who kept getting to the Super Bowl and losing it?

How about the 90s-00s Packers, who had one of the best QBs ever, a great coach, some incredible offensive weapons and some nice defensive parts. They only won one SB too, just like the Bears. Of course, they got back a couple of times.

Yes, the Bears "should" have won another title or two -- or at least gotten back to the Super Bowl. But McMahon was always hurt, they had some huge egos that wanted paydays and a few of their individual "stars" were a tad overrated. Plus -- and I know this is blasphemy, my friend -- Ditka wasn't an especially good coach.

I don't think you can say that as a fact.  The NFC of the mid to late 80s had the Redskins, Giants, Bears and Niners.  Those four teams won 10 of 11 Super Bowls starting in 1982.

I guess they did lose home playoff games in three straight years (86-88), and in one of those cases they were the #1 seed.

Who is to say this year's Panthers aren't 13/19ths of the way to the greatest single season of all time?

Until somebody does what the '72 Dolphins did, all of this discussion is moot. You wanna be the greatest ever? Win 'em all!

Greatest underachievers? The late-'80s Bears are definitely in the team picture.

It's so sad that a sports team focuses so much on their only national championship, which happened decades ago.  Oh, wait.....

Different sport, but the 90's Atlanta Braves are the most under-achieving team in the past 30 years, IMO.  One championship in a decade-plus of dominance.

The Staleys rocked. My dad worked in the HR department of A.E. Staley in the '60's.  One time his boss said, "Want to see something?"  He pulled a folder out of a filing cabinet, and it was George Halas's personnel file. He was a supervisor in the Starch Department.

Oooo....good call. Loved that pitching staff, just couldn't make it over the hump. 1998 best rotation ever.

I think I picked the Braves to win it all about 6 times that decade. Oops.
