Title: Iowa/Uthoff
Post by: MilWarrior on December 10, 2015, 07:30:56 PM
Iowa kicking the crap out of #4 Iowa State in Ames. Up 14 at half.

Uthoff has 30 at half. 30. Guess Bo was on to something?

Super choke....
Two non inbound plays in row with 50 seconds left equals 5 State points.

Uthoff had 2 points in second half.

McKay with 20/12, State is tough and they get Burton real soon.  Fun to watch

And for some reason, Iowa State, the #2/4 team in the country stormed the court...  At home...  Having defeated a two loss team...  That's kind of pathetic.

There is no situation where a top 5 team in the nation wins a basketball game and a court storming is warranted.

They can do whatever they want. I'm just some schmuck on the internet. I am going to judge them for court storming after barely beating an inferior team at home but I don't think they'll care much.

Shame about the reporter breaking his leg though. I hope they hold the people responsible accountable.

Turns out this report was wrong.   A reporter did break his leg during the game but be broke it as he got his leg tangled with another reporter.   Was never trampled by any students.

The social media generation doesn't want to witness the action, they want to be a part of the action. When their team wins, they want to storm the court and be out there with the players, taking selfies and pretending like they won the game too.

I'm not above storming the court. Im a grown man and I was ready to storm it last year when tamu took undefeated Kentucky to double overtime and would have won if they didn't go something like 3/8 from the line in the final minute of regulation.

I just think it should be saved for truly significant upsets. The #4 team in the nation barely beating an unranked team is neither significant nor an upset.

But again I'm just some schmuck on the internet sharing his opinion.

Grandpa: Well kiddo, it was great.  When Marquette beat #4 Cincinnati in 2002, I stormed the court because that was a significant win over a top 5-ranked, rival team. You can't storm the court anymore though because it got out of hand when the generation of self-entitled, everyone-gets-a-trophy millenials thought that the court should be stormed for any and all victories, people started getting hurt and court-storming was banned.

Grandkid: So grandpa, tell me what college basketball was like when you were in college.

Grandpa: Well, this freshman named Michael Beasley blew up against Marquette in a closed door, unscored scrimmage.  Rumor has it he scored 41 points, propelling him to be the #2 pick in the NBA Draft after that season.  Despite doing nothing as an NBA player, at least he played when he was healthy in the NBA, unlike the #1 pick in that year's NBA Draft.  And, as a result of a freshman embarrassing Marquette without anybody witnessing it, Marquette dropped a seed line in that year's NCAA Tournament, and KState's bench rushed the court after their big unscored win.

If you were at Marquette in 2002 you're technically part of the millenial generation as well

Sometimes the best things in life are spur of the moment.  I am 100 percent positive that the Iowa State students did not plan on rushing the court after beating Iowa.  Hell they probably thought they were going to win by 15 points, and have temporary bragging rights on message boards and with coworkers.
But......... All the sudden the home team is down by 20 and left for dead, they come back, but than Iowa makes a run again and are left for dead again, than by some fluke chance they comeback again and take the lead with 8 seconds left on a floater and the crowd goes nuts,  then Iowa's best player who was killing you all game misses a 3 pointer and all the sudden you won the game.
It was pure joy, pure spontaneous unplanned thrill.   Students got super excited and celebrated.
NOT one of these students cared that some fans on message boards and twitter were going to say "Act like you have been there  before" or "you beat an unranked team, so calm down"      It was SPONTANEOUS.     If we were the #4 team and beat Wisconsin or ND under the same set of circumstances, I'm not sure that our 20 year old selves could contain the joy either.

If this was all planned well before the game; than yes it would have been super lame.  But judging from fan reaction it was most certainly not.

Court storming is such an innocent act. Yall are acting like they just disrespected your mother and sister at the same time. So long as they don't go up to their opponents and rub it in their face who effing cares.

I don't think anyone here is saying its not innocent. Were just judging Iowa State fans for being that excited about barely beating an unranked team. I get that they had a big comeback against their arch rival, but after the initial excitement of winning, you look at that game and you realize that you should have won by double digits and you barely escaped with a one point lead. That's not a good performance.

I think Merritts makes a good point though. The more common court storming becomes, the more likely it is to get banned, and that ruins it for everyone.

Gotcha.  Fair enough.  Sometimes I think you make unfair personal criticisms of some players based on them beating your dad's school.  You would know better than I would as to how those players are in terms of their personalities, but sometimes I think it just comes with the territory (if you're a high major D1 player, chances are you were a pretty confident high school player).

That's a pretty fair assessment. (though not many teams have beaten them recently) It's more the culture of the schools then the kids. I don't know wisconsin schools compare but it's the kids who were given everything in life and the parents who make snide racial remarks during games, which is why I tend to be super defensive. So maybe like a Germantown? (you would know a better comparison then me)

That being said, Jon Scheyer and Duje Dukan can still go eff off.  ;)

One of my favorite memories during my years at MU was storming the court. It was an absolute blast...and it was warranted.

However, there's no need to storm the court for mundane victories, for lack of a better term. Rivalry game or not, the #4 team in the country beating an unranked, double-digit underdog at home is not a big deal. There's no reason to throw a huge celebration for simply doing what you're supposed to do. That goes back to the everyone-gets-a-trophy phenomenon.
