Title: DePaul Arena Cost Overrun & Expected Completion Date
Post by: Skatastrophy on December 08, 2015, 10:04:36 AM
http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20151207/south-loop/harriet-rees-house-move-cost-taxpayers-8-million-report

The cost overrun from moving a historical landmark to make way for the arena:
QuoteThe agency, using bond proceeds, paid $5.8 million to physically relocate the home, and $2.33 million in professional fees and other costs to acquire the Rees home's former and current sites. The total $8.13 million cost is more than 10 times the $798,000 the Cook County Assessor believes the Rees home is worth.

The expected completion:
QuoteThe McCormick Place Event Center, where DePaul University will host its basketball games, is expected to open in 2017.

Good time to be a realtor in River Forest or the like

Imagine that. A public works project in Cook County running past deadline and over budget...

What did Rahm know and when did he know it??

What would that have to do with the new DePaul arena?

Used to be, may still be, a pretty common place for organized crime and others with their hands in the pockets of the Chicago Machine to live.  Really nice area though.

Why is the operational efficiency of another school's arena a point of obsession on this board?

What is your obsession with a former coach at a different school we don't play that hasn't been here in nearly a decade?   8-)

All kinds of obsessions on this board, just a matter of deciding which one people in particular car about.

Hmmm.  I have lived in the Chicago area for over 25 years and have never heard that. And I don't believe anyone on Scoop has ever implicitly or explicitly suggested that there was organized crime involved in the DePaul deal (unless you are).  It has simply been the opinion of many posters on Scoop that the new DePaul arena is a stupid, wasteful project,  typical of many endeavors run by the city of Chicago.

Really? Interesting.  And I mean no disrespect to the city or the area.  Its actually the first line in the "Notable People" section on Wikipedia when you look at it, like I did just now for the heck of it.  I think Chicago Outfit guys migrated there due to proximity to Cicero and cause its very nice and not like the North Shore.

And I wasn't suggesting organized crime is part of it.  You're taking this all too literal.  I'm saying that many construction and city projects in the city are stupid and wasteful and way over cost, cause the city is massively corrupt and money changes hands everywhere.  Not everyone who profits from said projects and/or corruption is organized crime members.  More likely just buddies with members of key local governments.

And above all, it was a joke...

River Forest was home to Tony the Tuna, among others.

Having gone to Oak Park River Forest, I know what he's talking about but it hasn't been like that in years. Now the organized crime is mostly in Elmwood Park or farther west sending their kids to Montini. Funny story about the local mob though, my dad once ran for judge, originally uncontested, around here and got approached by the mob to "be bought" because he has an italian last name. My dad said no and suddenly there were two other lawyers running for judge both with italian last names. Funny how that worked.

Gotta agree with JWags about RF being a nice area, those fools are loaded.

That house is nuts. It looks like a simple old ranch house above ground and it has like 4 or 5 sub basements. One of which has a bowling alley.  Also you can see where he used to have a machine gun posted on top of the house.

Used to go trick or treating there.  And was classmates with two of his granddaughters and played little league with his grandson, who is considered by many to be one of the best athlletes in Illlinois prep history (all state in the 3 major sports, I believe).

Friends lived in the home a while back--only one basement, as it turned out--but a hidden door to get there a huge boardrooom, a second commercial grade kitchen, and "interesting" former walk in meat locker and walk in safe (converted to a wine cellar).  You mechanical engineers would be impressed with the HVAC system.  And no windows in the basement.   8-)

His other RF home is now one of those places where Christmas threw up:  a mansion covered in tacky xmas excess.

Lots of coonnected folks from my days growing up in EP and RF.  Mostly moved out, with the bigger shots going to Barrington.

Aww man the whole sub basements thing is a rumor? That's disappointing. I've heard his wife was really nice is that true?

I know the house you're talking about and Christmas throwing up on it perfectly describes it but come on it's kinda fun to bring kids to see, I bring my nephew every year!

Interestingly a Marquette Evans Scholar, Mitch Mars, a terrific prosecutor, put away the mayor of Cicero, Betty Loren-Maltese and a few years later he put away a few members of the mob in  the "family secrets" trial. Unfortunately Mitch died a few years ago.

A lot of us live down here. It's just a few blocks south of me, so I'm hoping they wrap it up so I can walk to BEast games.

Motor Row Brewing (http://www.motorrowbrew.com/?age-verified=304f2cfaaa) is between me and the new arena. The more excuses I have to stop by there, the happier I'll be.

Hey- I admit that we visit the house every year too...can't not do it.  Yeah, I thought the basement thing was real too.  And I think the bowling alley was actually in the old house. And I heard the same thing about his wife.  They didn't socialize much. One of the few times I saw them in public was at my confirmation.  My grandparents, who also were my godparents, were there.  When my father pointed out to my grandfather that Big Tuna and is wife were sitting right behind my grandparents, they walked out. When asked later, my grandfather said it wasn't so much because they were offended, but instead he was afraid that someone would take the opportunity to "take him out."

Was the old house also in River Forest? Just looked up some photos of the big house on franklin, that pool room is incredible!

Wow that's a pretty awesome confirmation story!

By the Old House, I meant the house on Frankllin.   The New House was the one at Ashand and Greenfield (in late 70's/early 80's, gardner and others burglarized and stole $1,000,000, and not too long after all found dead).  Oddly, after they sold the new house (early 80's), they moved into a condo on Harlem just north of Augusta.  Not exactly Fort Knox.

The fact you brought Crean into this with really no backing from my behavior on this board points to your infatuation with the man.

Oh gotcha. Huh well maybe those condos on Harlem are more secure than we think!
