Prefontaine (Jared Leto as Pre, F Lee Emery as Bowerman)
1983 movie "Running Brave" (Robby Benson as Billy Mills, American Indian that won the 10,000 meter gold in the 1964 Olympics).
Finally, the best sports movie ever is Raging Bull. Might be on of the best movies, in any category, ever made in the history of cinema.
That movie Southpaw that came out recently is actually a decent boxing movie. I wouldn't put it in with the greats but it's certainly on par with most of the other ones.
Also there's actually one MMA movie it's called Warrior, and while I hate MMA I must say the movie was pretty decent.
Glad you made this list I've never seen Hurricane and completely forgot about Ali, Will Smith was really good in that.
For hockey movies I really liked Goon. Funny movie about a hockey enforcer. It's on Netflix watch instantly.
Don't know why but glory road has always had a special place in my heart. Love that movie. Great soundtrack too with Alicia Keys.

Just watched Running Brave a few days ago while working out on the elliptical. Great movie that I have watched several times.
"Without Limits" was a great movie about Prefontaine, but the movie "Prefontaine", was just absolutely awful. Two very different movies and one captured Pre and Bowerman perfectly and the other was so far off it was almost comical.
Also, I second the post that McFarland, USA was a great cross country movie, despite most of the actors not looking like top high school runners. Kevin Costner did a better than expected job as the coach.

Pre and Bowerman were contemporary to my time running cross country. The Donald Sutherland movie showed Pre's drive....amazing. Good flick.
As a related aside.....Bowerman invented and toyed around with track shoes at Oregon, designed and sold under a new brand name called Nike.
In those days (early 70s), the best, richest track runners bought the premier brand "Adidas" named for Adi Dassler a german track shoe designer. A few of my fellow runners bought Tiger ( a Japanese brand...now known as Asics) . I bought a newly released pair of flat soled, new design CC shoes under the new brand name of Nike. I won the conference meet wearing my new Nikes. Having checked on Ebay, I kick myself now for not having hung on to those first edition Nike shoes...collectors pay a fortune for them now!

I ran HS track in the mid 70s, and had a pair of Tigers and an early pair of Nikes (though probably not first edition).
You're correct about Tiger becoming Asics. Back then, the company was named Onitsuka. When retro styles started to come back, I discovered them once again selling old-style shoes under the Onitsuka Tiger label.

North Face: Nazi sponsored expedition to summit the north face of Switzerland's Eiger. Spectacular scenery.
Touching the Void: Incredible true story about two Brits who scaled the west face of Siula Grande in Peru.
Cold: First team to summit K2 in winter
127 Hours: Best reason to never climb solo

First Ascent: Extreme climbing around the world. Best vignette is Berthod's attempt on Cobra Crack in BC.
Vertical Frontier: This film features Yosemite's walls. Magnificent.
Deadly Ascent: Denali.
The Man Who Skied Down Everest: True story about a Japanese climber who climbed to the summit of Everest then skied back down.
180o South: One of my favorite places - Patagonia.

Olympics: Munich ... Well done, tension-packed movie about the '72 terrorist/hostage situation.
Boxing: When We Were Kings ... Amazing documentary about the Ali-Foreman fight in Zaire.
Baseball: The Naked Gun ... OK, not really a sports movie, but the baseball scenes -- especially with Frank Drebin calling balls and strikes -- are hilarious.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-S-eeInJVk
Basketball: White Men Can't Jump ... Mostly funny.
Football: Big Fan ... Laughed my ass off several times at Patton Oswalt's pathetic loser of a Giants fan.
Also have enjoyed many, many of the ESPN 30 for 30s.
For the record, my No. 1 sports movies of all time is Hoop Dreams. No screenwriter could have invented a more compelling story because the whole thing was real.
I do understand the Raging Bull love, though, and I love it, too. The best performance of DeNiro's career, IMHO.
If rasslin' is a "sport," then The Wrestler is certainly in my top 10. Also a big fan of Slap Shot, North Dallas Forty and Hoosiers (love any team that can shoot 90% from the floor!)
I consider Rocky to be top-10 material and most of the sequels to be garbage, but I have to admit a soft spot for Rocky III because I loves me some Mr. T.
Most overrated sports flick: Field of Dreams. It's a snoozer and historically error-filled -- Shoeless Joe batting right-handed, for crissakes! And even though I am famously (in my family) weepy at sentimental movies, it was so contrived I didn't shed a tear. Bull Durham is far superior entertainment. If I want sentimental baseball schlock, I'll go with Pride of the Yankees or The Natural.

Disagree.
Figure Skating is one of the most popularly watched Winter Olympic sports, and Gymnastics the same in the Summer Olympics (also Diving). All of these are decided by judges...they are all still clearly sports. The athleticism to do these things make them sports...objective winning is not definitional to sport. Consider Keefe's mountain climbing and many who recreation-ally swim, bicycle, ski, surf, or enjoy those kids sports seen in the xgames. Not keeping score, or having judges decide, still qualifies the activity as sport.
In this thread...I tried to place NO restrictions on the postings here...Its just movie escapism,... so who really cares?

I couldn't agree more, Mike. I would not have pictured Redford when I read the novel. But somehow, he is a natural (pardon the pun.) Certainly my favorite baseball book with baseball Paradise and Hobbs career as a metaphor for The Fall.
In our first semester English class (I can't recall the class number) we had to write what was basically a book report and my roommate wrote his on The Natural without ever reading it. Apparently the TA had read it because he noticed that he missed the major difference between the book and movie.

We could have discussions all day about what is and isn't a "sport." Probably should be a different thread.
Why is gymnastics more "athletic" than ballet?
Why is figure skating more of a "sport" than ballroom dancing?
I also prefer sports that aren't decided by judges, many of whom have ulterior motives. Having said that, I very much enjoy ice skating at the Olympics, as it's usually great theater.
Again, not trying to hijack this thread about movies.

I'm pretty certain that even my 2 y/o daughter could ascertain that
Cars was a movie about auto racing. Granted, the cars were anthropomorphic, so I suppose one could make the argument that it was more analogous to long distance running than auto racing (since the cars aren't actually driving cars). But my guess is that wasn't what you were getting at by putting auto racing in quotes, because, of course, there is no athletic element in auto racing. Which is somewhat confusing because a) I thought we weren't making restrictions and b)
Racing was one of the categories in the OP.

That is great! The book and movie have very different endings. Hollywood doesn't like dire, unremitting pathos.
Any Given Sunday is one of my favorites. The halftime speech is just phenomenal even though parts of the movie are over the top (ie. eyeball popping out). I always envisioned Cap in the way I wanted Favre's career to fade away. Playing the tough mentor role and giving everything he had until he knew the young guy was a better option.
For some reason, the Air Up There will always be a classic for me.

For climbing I'll pimp a buddy of mine who combined his passions: climbing, artistry, and family/life.
Check out 'Drawn: The Art of Ascent' either the movie or the book. www.jercollins.com (http://www.jercollins.com)
That is crazy. Is he one of the guys in First Ascent?
I am a member of The Mountaineers which is here in Seattle. I just ordered his book.
By the way, I think it's great he is a climber based out of KC. Seattle is the epicenter for global climbing/mountaineering which makes sense given that we are surrounded by mountains. But one cannot find a decent smoked brisket if one's life depended on it. Life is about choices and priorities which, from the synopsis of Drawn, is precisely the point of his book and movie! I look forward to reading the book.

Disagree. Ballet requires supreme atheticism and isn't a sport. Dancing with ther Stars is a very popular TV show and is a competition that requires some athletic ability but is definitely not a sport. Figure skating and diving are close to that than real sport. Hell, figure skaters costumes were part of the judging process until recently. How is that a sport? Any competition where the winner is decided solely by the opinion of a judge is not a sport.
Boxing:
Diggstown
Hockey:
Mystery, Alaska
Two movies that are either bad movies that I like or just plain good movies. I'm not sure. Love 'em both, though.

I saw that and I agree it is a good film. The script was done by Jon Krakauer who is one of my favorite writers. Krakauer upset many in the Seattle climbing world when he moved from here to Boulder.
Really, the only climbing movie I never cared for was Vertical Limit. Nobody could behave the way they did on a 7K m mountain and survive.

I'm pretty certain that even my 2 y/o daughter could ascertain that Cars was a movie about auto racing. Which is somewhat confusing because a) I thought we weren't making restrictions and b) Racing was one of the categories in the OP.

Is Mountaineer a military branch you're referring to where they fight for 720 hours? Or are you just talking about climbing a mountain? Because sport is more than just endurance. Hard sports are measured by many factors and while I don't agree with the overall ranking of this list I think the factors they use are a good measure of how tough a sport is.

I actually this movie could've been a classic family movie. But for some reason, they threw in a bunch of sexual references, including one of the players banging the mayors wife. I really enjoy the movie (Mike Myers is great!) but I think they grossly misjudged who the audience would be for a NY Rangers play pond hockey movie.

Baited into what? I listed a movie, and you summarily dismissed it... right after speaking about erring on the side of inclusion, no less.
On topic, I agree with Field of Dreams being the most overrated sports movie ever. If sentimental BS intertwined with a lukewarm sports story is what it takes for one to reflect upon his own life with regret, then I'd suggest For Love of the Game before Field of Dreams.

For Love of the Game would be great if they got rid of the Kelly Preston storyline (she peaked in "Mischief" in 1985). Field of Dreams hasn't aged well, but Burt Lancaster hams it up awesomely in his cameo and MU alum Amy Madigan is good in it. Not only does Joe Jackson bat from the wrong side of the plate (heck they even reversed the film so Gary Cooper could bat right-handed as Lou Gehrig in Pride of the Yankees - its not that hard), but they mispronounced Eddie Cicotte's name. Eight Men Out is a pretty good account of the Black Sox scandal. Baseball is the hardest sport to fake in a movie if you've never played it.

That might be an overstatement. How about gymnastics or figure skating? Or swimming, for that matter. If you have never been a serious competitive swimmer, it would take months develop passable stroke technique, especially for anything other than freestyle.
But yeah, baseball movies are full of fakers. Have you ever noticed that the only person in "A League of Their Own" who can actually play is Rosie O'Donnell? I am not sure they actually show Madonna throwing or hitting.

They made it look like Russell Crowe could actually skate in Mystery, Alaska. Pretty decent, actually, until you watch closely.
Swim caps and goggles would make swimming easy to fake with stunt doubles. I'd probably have to re-watch Toepick to see how John Cusack did as a figure skater.

Actually, I thought Lori Petty did the best job of looking like a player in that movie (except for the extras that obviously could play).
I suppose you are right that swimming would be the toughest if you've never swam before because of the whole drowning thing. But with a few weeks of training I would think you could fake anything reasonably well except for the butterfly. You may be right about figure skating but they just use creative angles and real skaters in those movies and just show them start smiling after sticking the landing or whatever they call it. They never do that for baseball, though. They seem to think that they can show Thomas Jane playing Mickey Mantle in "61*" making a throw from the outfield even though he throws like a righthanded 6 year old girl throwing lefthanded.

I guess by "faking" I thought CTWarrior meant the actual actor doing the faking. In that case, you can fake baseball pretty easily by just photographing the stunt double from the back, from far away, or with the baseball cap pulled down far enough.
In "Blades of Glory", they actually used CGI to put Will Ferrell's and Jon Heder's heads on the bodies of other skaters.
