Title: Stat of the Night
Post by: TAMU, Knower of Ball on November 17, 2015, 12:10:25 AM
Marquette ranks 349th out of 351 teams in D1 games played by player.

349th.

Anyone who didn't think this was going to be an issue at the beginning of the season, if not the whole season, was fooling themselves.

That was an incredible stat.  That lack of games is definitely showing early.  Hopefully we will be a much different team come March.

It took me awhile to understand what this stat was, but damn, thats sobering.  Explains a lot of the struggles at this point.

I still think this will be a very up and down year.

This is a stat to measure experience as a team. If you added together all individual games played for the team, compare those against all other teams you can stack rank the overall experience for each team. In this case MU is the 349th most experienced team or the 3rd most inexperienced team. As a team, it members have played the 3rd fewest games at the D1 level.

It should be judged by minutes played because it could be worse because the Sr. Walkon played 4 games.

Games played by MU player prior to 15-16 season:
Jajuan Johnson: 52 games
Luke Fischer: 37 games (24 at Marquette)
Duane Wilson: 32 games
Sandy Cohen: 31 games
Wally Ellenson: 8 games (0 at Marquette)
Michael Mache: 4 games
Sacar Anim: 0 games
Matt Heldt: 0 games
Henry Ellenson: 0 games
Traci Carter: 0 games
Haanif Cheatham: 0 games
Christian Haffner: 0 games
Cam Marotta: 0 games

Total: 164 games. Good for 349th in D1.
Average per player: 12.6 (not sure where that ranks)

This team is super young and super inexperienced. There will be excruciating growing pains.

I got it from Matty V. Not sure where the complete list is. But if I had to guess, I think it's two of St. John's, Kentucky, Boston College, and Coppin State that are below us.

Sheesh.... That's a sobering list. But we are a few less mistakes away from 2-0 (albeit an ugly 2-0).
Like it has been said... Winning breeds winning and Wojo himself said "we need to teach them how to win on this level."
A lot of those 0's are now 1-1 and almost 2-0. Keep the positivity going!

What, no Italy?

Seriously, thank God they went.  Otherwise half these guys wouldn't know how to put a jock on yet.

Kenpom says #273 for experience at 0.86 years. However, his ranking ends at #283, since a number of teams haven't started playing yet.

Of note, LSU ranks #276

Here's another consideration. In the next couple years, we'll likely go from one of the least experienced teams to one of the most because we will return virtually everyone. Every player on this year's roster will be able to return in 2016-17, and 70% of this year's scholarship players would be able to return in 2017-18.

Games played by MU player prior to 15-16 season:

So of the list, Duane and JaJuan last year are the only two who have played one complete season and averaged more than 20 minutes per game.

This makes me feel better.

I wonder if STJ had stayed how we would look stat wise.  How big are the margins?

Removed Mache, Haffner, and Marotta as walkons and we get to 160 total games and 16.0 per player.

Not sure, but I'd think I'd be significant. STJr played 90 games for Marquette, which would increase our total games by 54.8%.

The fact that he's played here before is not a good enough reason to wish he had stayed.

I can't see a role that he would play on this team, even having more experience.

Not sure I agree.....he'd be taking minutes from Sacar and long term I think that's a bad thing.  He might help this year in terms of some more flexibility with Henry and Luke (playing them a little less together) but he was so lost of defense the last two years I don't know that it's worth it.

Without looking things up I doubt its UK

Ulis himself played in almost 40 last year

Poythress even with injury and Lee spoardic time defintiely have 20 combined games
