Title: CBS ranks the 15 programs best positioned to succeed over the next five years
Post by: kryza on September 14, 2015, 04:23:54 PM
Kinda interesting to see no Indiana, ND, Wisconsin, or MU in the top 15. I can't really argue with the top 5 though.

The good news is that Parrish seems to think that Coach K is sticking around awhile.  If Wojo turns out to be good, that could be great for Marquette.

No matter what year it happens, I would argue if Wojo gets the Duke job it means we just went on the best tear since Al.

I would take that trade.

Nice to see #DoneDeal has done nothing in Texas yet and is in the top 15... Hogwash.

Hey, wait one minute! If Parrish really wrote this he would have Virginia Tech on that list.

I call bull sh1t!

Pretty solid list.  I disagree with 14 and 15, but not sure who I would place in those two spots.

This is just 4 guys around a water cooler coming up with a consensus opinion.  How much value do you give Parrish or the other 3.  It's nice he named the other 3.

When reading things like this, I remember that old saying,  " A Camel is a Horse designed by a Committee."

Duke, Kentucky and Kansas are set up to do well in the near future?  I'm shocked I tell you, shocked!  Can't wait to see which schools are best positioned to succeed in Alaska and Hawaii.

A couple of thoughts I have on this list:

Gonzaga at #6???  That seems a bit high.  Especially for a team that Parrish doesn't really feel confident will make a FF.  "Whether they'll ever make a Final Four remains up for debate."   Not saying they shouldn't be here in the top 15.  But I would think a team listed #6 you would feel confident they would make a FF over the next 5 years.

As already mentioned, Texas at #11?  Understand they have a huge athletics budget, and Shaka just hired is exciting, but they haven't accomplished anything over the last several years, lets please wait til we see what Shaka brings there for at least one year.

Wichita State at #14.  Yes, locking up Gregg Marshall was nice, but do we really think they can continue their last several years over the next 5?  I think its way early to be making this statement "He has a chance to turn Wichita State into the Gonzaga of the MVC".  Additionally, how many other coaches at mid-majors have been "locked up long-term" to end up leaving a couple years later?

Damn, that guy has a face made for radio.  I think he tries too hard and it backfires.  A little too much cosmetic stuff going on.

What three programs would you put on the list instead?

I would only choose two.  I think Gonzaga stays on the list, just slides down a few spots.

And I'm not completely sure, and understand that that kind of detriments my points above.  But a couple of options are listed below:

Iowa State:  Understand they lost Hoiberg, but they continually reload each year and are in a conference they can continue to thrive in
Georgetown:  Proven coach, young talented roster, another good recruiting class coming in
Notre Dame (as much as I hate to):  Several years of success, good coach in a great conference

There it is with the Zag hate!

Gonzaga is the Belgium of College Hoops. They make great beer, superb chocolate, and have incredible street fries but everyone comes back to 'but they get their asses kicked in every war they fight.'

Sure, they get overrun by Germany, France, and even Holland but you need to remember they make great beer, superb chocolate, and have incredible street fries. Focus on the good, man.

an analogy that I will share with the horde of Gonzaga grads that clutter my bar time.  The perils of living on the left coast.

I just so happen to be going to Belgium next month.  Thanks for the travel tips!  Also hoping to make trips just across the border into France, Germany, the Netherlands and perhaps Luxembourg.  What are their specialties?

That's the only way Wojo gets THAT job.

"Best since Al" implies Wojo has to make the championship game to get consideration for the hypothetically open Duke job.

I say no way does he have to reach that level.

First assume MU wins the Big East (or second to Villanova), gets a high seed (3), but loses to the 2 seed in a close game in the Sweet 16 game.  That would be great performance--probably ahed of most expectations at MU for this year--but certainly not the best performance since Al.

Then assuming Coach K wins the championship and decides to retire on top, absolutely Wojo would be on the short list to replace him. His first year is completely discounted as he was coaching Buzz's holdovers. Long-time Duke alum and assistant. His first recruiting class results in a one-year turnaround of a 13-19 program from a solid conference into a Sweet 16 team?  He'd be on every open high-major short list.

I would guess that in the next five years at least half of the teams on this list do not make the final four. 5 x4 = 20 spots. It would not surprise me if Kentucky and Duke take 8 of those spots, leaving 12 spots over 5 years for the rest of the country. Obviously, success incorporates expected NCAA bids and total wins. Gonzaga has been to 17 straight NCAA tournaments and has won 25 games for several years. There is no reason to expect that to change.

Valid point.  And I still think they belong, just not ahead of Louisville or Michigan State, and potentially UNC or Villanova.

After recently relocating to the Raleigh/Durham area, a few of my Duke friends say that Capel has secured pole position to possibly replace Coach K when that time comes.  The rejuvenation that the Blue Devils have had recently are due in large part to Capel's lead role on the recruiting trail.  Duke has done something that many didn't think was possible...out recruit Kentucky (and Capel has been recognized for a lot of that success).

Time will tell, but we can pump the brakes on the 'Wojo replacing Coach K' talk.
