Generally speaking, the Scoop community (except for that den of scum and villainy known as the Politics Board ;)) seems positive and I dare say optimistic for the upcoming season. Let's be honest, we live in a bubble of Marquette super fandom. I'm curious, what do we think the casual MU fan is thinking about this season? Or what are the incoming freshman thinking of this season? Or what do we think the general public thinks about this team or season.
I recognize this is entirely subjective, but I really don't want to work hard this afternoon and I thought this might stir an interesting discussion
To be perfectly honest, I am fine with MU's awesomeness being our little secret.
I never understood the butthurt some guys got when Marquette didn't receive the preseason props they deserved. Better to fly under the radar.
I think the general public, and probably most casual fans, have no idea who Henry Ellenson is, and are expecting a season similar to last year.
03, your summer podcast listenership numbers are what again? John Q Public isn't thinking about MU hoops at all. Perhaps a few new Frosh/Frosh parents. Everyone else is all about Packers/Badgers football. I think most folks know we signed a top recruit but that's as far as it goes right now. Even the season ticket holders (8000 non-students?) haven't give it much thought since the bill came 6 weeks ago.

It is good for ticket sales. But I think John Q. Public are mostly walk-up buyers anyway.
Locally, they'll be off the radar until they go into Madison and win on December 12th.

I agree from a competitive standpoint, but the ultimate point is to make money off of this. Your link to the facebook pictures of the team partial triggered this thought in my head. Marketing hasn't been too aggressive so far, are they saving their powder for the season to get closer?
Admittedly it is easy to get lost in the wash that is NFL, College Football and MLB pennant but this seems to be the least buzzy season I've seen in a while and I'm trying to figure out why that is.

Actually our audience numbers were the best they've ever been in the summer. I do think the fact that there has been far more positive news than negative helps with that but the 6 super fans and our moms are clearly engaged and listening, even in the summer ;)
Most non scoop types I've talked too (even season ticket holders I sit with), know that we are going to be better than last year, they have heard that, but don't know why

How dare you call fellow scoopers scum. Everyone is entitled to their opinion or point of view no matter how much you may not like it. I for one am cautiously optimistic about this season.

That's fantastic. Perhaps you can soon arrange that case of beer sponsorship you've longed for.

I'm assuming there was a latent sarcasm font here? Mine definitely was meant as sarcasm, right down to the blatant Episode IV quote rip off

And shortly after, the podcast would be reduced to a dumpster fire, which would be a major downgrade from the small kitchen grease fire we currently have going.
I judge casual fan-ness by comments I get from people at work (who know I'm a diehard fan) and my wife, who I'm able to drag to about 5-6 games per year.
Here's how the casual fan breaks the season down: 1.) November: So, how's Marquette gonna be this year? 2.) March: Where's Marquette/How far should I pick Marquette in the tournament?
Also, they really have no concept of who the freshmen are or if they're good until at least midway through the season, no matter what you say.
That's in Michigan, right?
The Pres was on a roadshow all last year talking about the potential for a big recruiting class. So John Q Donor thinks we will be young but full of promise. Most people also know we got a top 10 recruit.
I'm not sure I'm rightly categorized as a "casual fan" but if you look at how many posts I've made (ever) it says something about my perception of the excitement level surrounding the team and program. It won't get much play because of the NFL kickoff for a while but I've talked to some more casual fans about the program and I think people know they will be better!

No, I agree with Eng. Those of us who post on the Politics board are scum.
As far as flying under the radar, I never think that is a good thing. Kids in HS want to be recruited by programs that are on the sports pages everyday - especially the national media.

Hey!... no wait it's true
If we start the season off 5-0, we will be ranked and John Q Public will start to care.
A good friend, MU alum (1977), not a message board denizen...."I hear we have a pretty good freshman class coming in. Cool. At least there's hope. Last year was pretty painful."
My nephew at a family function came over to me and said I'm really exicited about Marquette this year. Hes 24
and went to UWM, so we talked about the new guys and he knew as much about them as I do. Surprised, cause
the rest of the family is all about the Badgers.

I think one group that will be loosely tracking MU more than usual is Minnesota fans. Obviously ex-Gopher Wally and Henry are with MU, but Sacar was also the subject of many debates over the years relative to the Gophers...
I've been asked a lot at work how good this team will be. There has to be some excitement, because most of the guys I work with are Badgers first, but they want to plan a company outing to a Marquette game this year (never done that before). Guess they'll see us dominate, because just about every game between now and when everyone gets transferred (Dec 20) is a cupcake.

I think they will be upset Big time, that Sacar got away, Four HS titles and POY, how can you let that happen. How much of an impact will he have in recruiting his buddies. Especially after the way we play this year!

With our non-con cake walk, it will be interesting to see if our 11-2 start garners attention locally or if everyone will take it for what it is.

We should set up a game against Minnesota next year. Sacar really wanted to stay home an go to The U but they never offered him.
I'd like to see something like when Vander wentinto the Kohl Hole for payback

John Q Public has no idea that our schedule is a cake walk. Plus, 11-2 means three wins over Belmont, Iowa, lsu, Arizona state, NC state, or Wisconsin. I would be ecstatic going 3-2 against that group
I've noticed that a really good season, tends to result in more interest the following year.
If Ellenson gets a lot of press and is a top 10 projected pick, I'd expect to get some casual fan interest come January-February, especially if we are top 25 (which if he is doing well, we could be).
But I wouldn't expect too much for this season, unless we are really good.

I think they will be aware because that caveat will be put on the record every time it's mentioned....same thing happened to DePaul last year "DePaul is 9-2 going into conference play but that's against one of the easiest schedules in the country" or "DePaul, with a very soft schedule, is off to a strong 9-2 record", etc.
That's the national media, not sure what local did in Chicago or what the local would do in Milwaukee. Depending on how the Packers and what bowl the Badgers are in....it may not get mentioned at all.

DePaul got that caveat last year because when someone sees a "DePaul 9-2" headline, they're going to go looking for the caveat whether or not it's disclosed. It's a conditioned response that takes years, decades perhaps, to develop. MU will not elicit such Pavlovian behavior after a 12-1 start.

There's also the issue of Minnesota recruiting Anim's teammate who has the heart ailment and will not be playing for the Gophers.

Big difference. Vander was a 4.5*. Wisconsin wanted him badly, and had him as a verbal. After Buzz coached up Wesley (and removed the "chains") Matthews convinced Blue to reconsider. Sacar is a 3* and Minny didn't want him. UW fans hated Vander. Most Minnesota fans have never heard of Sacar.

Agreed.
I was looking at it from allowing Sacar to unleash with a big chip on his shoulder.
You're right, though, there's not even a guarantee that he'll be playing starter minutes next year.
