Title: 300 to 1
Post by: Benny B on August 18, 2015, 06:37:24 PM
No love from the Silver Legacy for Marquette... of course that just means that MU fans don't bet as much as the Valpo and Harvard fans do.

But Wm. Hill is offering 300 to 1 on MU.  Good value or not?

In other words (for you non-gambler types who aren't good at math)... sure, you're probably going to lose your $10 bet, but if there were 300 iterations of the 2015-16 season, does MU win at least one Championship?

Not that I'm taking suggestions, but what other value does anyone see here?  Butler at 60:1, no thanks.   Louisville at 40:1, perhaps.

Dang. Should have held out. I took them at 200/1. Also have Maryland at 14/1 before those odds dropped.

I like Texas A&M at 50/1 and Maryland also.

I appreciate the vote but we are a year away from tourney winning time.

You can have this year... MU gets next year.
I really think that A&M roster is going to be solid this year man!

$10? I'm gonna drop 10 thou on MU and become a millionaire when we cut down the nets!!

I was going to make 3 $10 bets, but wasn't crazy on a third team, so dropped $20 on MU at 300:1.  I figure I'm going to have to take all three kids to the Final Four, so I'm going to need more than 3 G's.

The other $10 shall remain undisclosed out of fear of ridicule.  Despite my initial thoughts, I did not put it on Slick Rick, though.

I was in Vegas two weeks ago and passed on the 300 to 1 bet. I now think the odds should be 200 to 1, which means I believe MU is better than the Vegas line. However, 200 to 1 will not win the NCAA tournament, so it is still a bad bet.

Without Henry Ellenson how far do we fall?  1000 to 1?

We could actually rise. Without Ellenson we could ended up in the field bet, which would be all the remaining teams without a line. I do not remember what the odds on the field bet is. I did make the field bet, which included MU, when we went to the final four with Wade.

Every bet in Vegas is a bad bet.  Talk to the people who who made the bad bet on Villanova at 100:1 before the tourney began in 1985.

Better yet, talk to this moron who made the two baddest bets in the last decade five years.

EDITED:  MDMU04 owns the title for baddest bet over the last decade (http://www.muscoop.com/index.php?topic=44022.msg624487#msg624487).

Every book has their own list of 99 teams, so the odds vary, but 100-200:1 seems typical at this point in the season... the first one I went to (Silver Legacy) didn't have a line for MU, so I went to the next book (Wm. Hill).  When I plopped down my $20, the guy standing next to me said he would give me even money.  I'm pretty sure he's not an alum, but he looked like a professional gambler (his hair - which hadn't been shampooed in days - was the giveaway).  Man, if he thinks MU is even money, maybe we're selling this team a little short this year.

The clerk asked me if I was an alum, which of course I told him I was.  Then he asked if Marquette was the school where Al McGuire coached; I said it absolutely was, and then he said:

"God, he was one of the greats.  Outstanding coach, very eloquent speaker.... I remember listening to him talk about the aircraft carrier... oh man, he was spectacular."

I've got a new favorite sportsbook.

Current AP Top 10 vs. Open:

OK  30:1
UNC  10:1
IA  150:1
KU   10:1
TAMU  75:1
NOVA  25:1
X   200:1
MD  9:1
WVU  125:1
PC  200:1

As suspected, lots of value in those opening odds.  I should have spread $50 across the Big East pre-season top 5.

I just put a cool $100K on MU.

That's a $30 million payday, my friends!

What could possibly go wrong?

Another "bad bet" is the Norwegian dude who bet on Suarez biting someone at the World Cup.

Yesterday we shared a story about a group of people who won a 175-to-1 bet that Luis Suarez would bite someone during the World Cup.

Marcos Martinez, a resident of Copenhagen, Denmark, says he was one of the lucky people who put some money down on Suarez biting someone. In an email exchange with For the Win, he answered some questions about his big payout.

How much did you bet?

I bet 40 Danish kronor, the equivalent of USD $7.30 (and won USD $1280).

I got Marquette at 500-1 a couple weeks ago at the Four Queens on Fremont St. Also got Iowa at 100-1, which I'm happy about, because they are 15-1 now.

Iowa state isn't bad value either at 35/1. They can beat any team in the country but at the same time, they can lose to anybody as well.

Definitely my thought as well I don't think they can possibly be consistent enough but those are the best odds and likelihood imaginable

Also, your boy nailed his wide open Js last night. All 3 were big too.

The last 3 was great. Though my favorite play may have been Matt Thomas having to take like 4 set up dribbles to be able to dunk it on that last play

they sure lit up kansas in the 2nd half on their floor the other night.  they've played oklahoma well twice.  splitting the home and away in close games.  beat iowa in an unbelievable comeback....35/1 looks pretty intriguing-that's not going to hold for long

In recent years, I have picked Iowa State to go far in my NCAA tourney brackets -- including a couple of Final Fours. So I'm disinclined to believe they finally will do so this year.

Then again, maybe Hoiberg was that crappy a coach. Or maybe it's finally their "turn." Who knows?

I do like Iowa better, though. Which means everybody here should run and bet against Iowa!
