Der Tod ist ihm zum Schlaf geworden,
aus dem er zu neuem Leben erwacht

That was a great restaurant. If my father passed through Milwaukee he would always take me and my gf/wife to Ratzsch's. She always joked he flew into Milwaukee less for me and more for Ratzsch's.

I read here on Scoop that the place is not nearly the same since the family sold out. Pity as that was a Milwaukee institution.

Chick and I met his son and DIL out at the Grand Canyon last year.  They had owned and operated Fox & Hounds out near Holy Hill for many years.  Sold out during the depths of the recession.  Now semi-retired, he's the restaurant executive manager at the Grand Canyon Squire Inn in Tusayan, just outside the park entrance.

Working in restaurants or hospitality is a tough way to make a living. Unless you are Dunks managing Jenna Jameson's titty bar in Scottsdale, that is.

I think part of the reasons for its decline is the type of food it serves.  German food is good, but not many people eat it regularly.

We were stationed at Wiesbaden back in the day and my father really loved German food and beer. My wife joked that he landed in Milwaukee for the food rather than seeing us and she wasn't too far off the mark.

But you're right - German food isn't an everyday thing.

Now that was a classy Milwaukee restaurant. Probably 1980 was the la, but during the last time I ate there. During the 60's and 70's--a great place!!! RIP.

I used to want to take my dates to Ratzsch's but couldn't afford it. One time I saved up enough to take a chick to the Chancery though.

First nice place I ever took my bride for nice meal. She got sick on the liver dumpling soup but was a trooper and has been back many times over the last 30 years.
