The Lakers plan to sign D-League's Vander Blue for final two games of the season, league source tells Yahoo Sports.
Is Vander playing PG or SG in the d-league?
Maybe he'll play one game and then declare he's leaving early in hopes of joining a playoff team.
Crazy, last couple weeks has been a good time to be an MU alum in the pros!
Vander has been playing point guard. He has improved his shot considerably...he is now a 3-point threat.
I'm still salty about him leaving early but hey, wasn't my decision to make. Hope he does well and gets something better than one of those 10-day contracts.

If Vander can hit a reasonable % from 3pt land, I think he'll be in the league for several seasons.
Buycks gets hurt and makes a spot for Vander? Talk about being a good bro!
Is Buycks still on the roster? If so we'll have 8 guys in the league, plus 2 coaches. That's pretty solid.

Yeah. On the roster, just inactive.
Who is the second coach besides Doc?
I'm almost positive Jim Boylan is on the bench for the Cavs.

Unless he was fired half way through the season he should still be there.

Do the lakers now have a Marquette spot" on their roster? I'd Vander can't keep it, next up DJO!
Somebody wake Doc up and get DJO on the Clippers!

So bucks and Vander have his former spot!
Next up, Jamil Wilson

Three coaches with Lawrence Frank under Doc.
Is that the same spot that started with Tony Smith?

Actually goes back to Jim Chones (79-81) and Butch Lee(80).

He played at Indiana, he was a former assistant here but assistants come and go all the time I think swoopem was referring to former players.
BTW, did we know that Todd Mayo was waived by his D-League team back in January?

Masters degree at MU.

He was suspended in December for taking a shot at another player: http://www.oursportscentral.com/services/releases/?id=4905798
Then he was waived from the team a monthe later:

He was getting minutes the games in between, though.
Pretty awful stats:

Vander barely made it to Sacramento in time per the radio. Got in under the gun to sign his contract and can play tonight
4 pts in 14 min at half.
Getting a solid opportunity here at least.
Not only playing, but starting. Man the Lakers are depleted, but good on Vander. Wasn't the biggest fan of his decision, but he's grinded and worked really hard since leaving MU.

He definitely didn't start at least according to ESPN.
Maybe he started second half?
Either 26 minutes is nice. Missed his free throws though!!
Looks like they went all out getting him a jersey too

I give Vander credit. Definition of a grinder these past couple of years. Man are the Lakers a hot mess or what?
Who used to wear #2 for the Lakers? Luckily, it fit, ai na?

That's low. Getting waived by the Knicks D-League team.
So how common is this 'cup of coffee' thing? We've now got several recent MU alums that have played a handful of games in their career. Even Buycks has only appeared in 20 games despite being on a roster for a full year in Canada. For comparison, Zar played in 72 games in his 2+ years in the league while Diener appeared in 179 over 5.

I'd assume it's the injured Wayne Ellington's #2 jersey. Regardless, Vander must think it's the most beautiful jersey he's has worn in a long time.

My mistake, I saw he was playing starters minutes early in the second half and assumed.

I think it depends a lot on injuries and team situations. Zar was a first round pick playing on a not-great Twolves team, so he was getting run there, and a bit less with the Thunder.
Buycks was on a very good Raptors team playing behind a star in Lowry and a good backup in Greivis Vasquez, so there wasn't alot of opportunity, a lot of DNP-Coach's Decision.
Now you look at the Lakers or a team like the Sixers or Knicks who have been out of the playoff picture forever, and if you are in their D-League organization, its a good potential, cause they are just trying things out and not really caring about winning games or setting a playoff roster.
Anyone know what the payday is for 2 games in the NBA? Probably twice what he made the entire year in the D-League.
1/41 of the Association minimum.
This article gives some insight on Dwight's $$ situation, which probably can tell you a lot about Vander's. Also says the Lakers were planning to sign Buycks through next year before the broken hand. Ugh.

QuoteBuycks will have earned $48,028 over his contract with the Lakers. He would cost an additional $14,408 for the final three days of the regular season.

This isn't the NFL. Players don't get paid by the game or collect game checks. A 10-day contract during which period the team has 6 games pays the same as a 10-day if the team has 4 games.

That was just mentioning the financial/roster implications of if they would sign him through next year, not necessarily highlighting their intentions, beyond signing him past a 10-day, like the Suns did with Jerel. Regardless, if they were considering him for 2015-2016, I would think his performance through the injury would be sufficient, absent 3 meaningless playground style games to end the year.
IIRC, 10-day contracts are worth 1/17 of the league minimum for each player based on service time.
In Van's case, it'll be just shy of $50k.
So, does a playa sign a 10 day contract when there's only 4 days remainin' in da season?
Nice dunk for Vander...
http://www.nba.com/video/games/kings/2015/04/13/0021401211-lal-sac-play3.nba/
During the game at the breaks they played Vander's highlights; Nice move out of a trap and across the lane for a layup, three-pointer and his steal and dunk. Played them again after the game. Players, coaches and commentators all said he played well for someone who showed up at the arena didn't talk to anyone ,including Byron Scott, and had no idea of plays, offensive and defensive schemes. Scored 7 points.
Good outing

Looking forward to seeing Vander make the most of this opportunity
On the drive home tonight they said before today's game that the Lakers were down to 8 guys and Vander would start and probably play the whole game. They weren't kidding. All 48 minutes.
Wow. Vander got to play whole game tonight.
The bad. He was 5-15 at one pt and I see he finished at 6-23 eeeeeek.
Good. Filled the stat sheet with 15-8-7
If he had missed one more shot he could have been nba finals MVP. #kobe

Vander's speed going to the basket was impressive. Jabari Parker bulled his way through the lane and Vander was at the rim in the blink of an eye.
Both D League guards acquitted themselves well.
Funny. He can tout that he averaged 11ppg and led the Lakers in average minutes played in 14-15.
I hope he gets a roster spot somewhere next year.

When you look at it the Lakers have been very good to MU and I might have to cease being a Laker hater...lol and drop my 35 year old resentment of the Kareem Abdul Jabbar trade to them.
If you look at all the Wisconsin and former MU players that they have signed and given a shot at making their roster and become a part of that storied franchise down through the year:
Tony Smith, Lazar Heyward, Darius Johnson Odom, Jerel McNeal, Vander Blue, Dwight Buycks, Shannon Smith, Nick Van Exel, Caron Butler, and I am sure there might be more. . .
I must say, that is impressive. They like guys with Wisconsin and Milwaukee ties.

The Kareem trade was fine. Milwaukee wasn't the place for him anymore. And he's certainly contributed to the city, especially in recent years. All good.
