Wow.  I was in a few Poli Sci classes with him.  Nice guy.  Not much in the way of details but more than likely heart related at such a young age?

Shocking news.  A big loss for the MU family.  Thoughts with his family; know he has a son who's a senior and plans to walk-on at MU next year, and a daughter who is a freshman in high school.

I read on twitter that he had 4 children. I have no idea. Either way it's way too young for them to lose their father.

Statement from Lovell:

The Marquette community is incredibly saddened to hear the news of Marc Marotta's death today. Beyond the thousands of people Marc touched on our Marquette campus, he was devoted to his family and we send our deepest condolences to them. Marc has left us far too soon, and he has left an enduring legacy both on our Marquette campus as well as across our community.
As a 1984 graduate of Marquette University, Marc was a member of our basketball team but was always most proud that he was a three-time academic All-American. He embodied the definition of a true student-athlete.
Marc's leadership stretched far beyond the court as he had a profound sense of civic responsibility on the region's most important issues. While best known for his role as the chair of the board of the BMO Harris Bradley Center, Marc was always willing to quietly lend a hand to causes close to his heart. Marc will be dearly missed and we ask that the community keep his family and friends in their prayers.
- President Michael R. Lovell

Statement from Wojo:

We are obviously saddened by the loss of Marc and are thinking of his family during this difficult time. Marc is one of our program's all-time best and a pillar of not only the Marquette family, but also the greater Milwaukee community. I have enjoyed getting to know him over the course of the past year and he has been a great supporter of our program.

Steve Wojciechowski
Head Men's Basketball Coach
Marquette University

Statement from Scholl:

Marc's passing is a tremendous loss to the community, not only on Marquette's campus, but in the greater Milwaukee area as well. He has been extremely supportive during my family's transition to Marquette and our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.

Bill Scholl
Vice President & Director of Athletics

Shocking.  My heart goes out to his family and kids.  A big loss for Marquette basketball. A guy who, from what I understand, didn't settle for Marquette being mediocre and made a push to get Dean out as coach. He will be missed by many, and his family, and by Marquette basketball.

In this age of "one and dones" and "look at me" types, a man like Marc really stands out as a role model for what a student athlete should strive to be. He also showed us "fans" how to use our faith, our education, and our energy to make a difference in this world. We ask for God's blessings on Marc's family in their time of need.

Really shocking.  Huge loss to the community.  Thoughts to his family.

I imagine that he was 52 .. should make a lot of us think about their health.  Just Monday in the paper, there was an ad for Healthfair.com that does mobile heart disease/stroke ultrasounds.    Any medical people think this is a good idea for aging Scoopers?

I hope Cam decides to wear #52 next year.  And let's remember what he's going through when Wojo summons him to the floor with a 25 point lead and 2 minutes to go.  He's our son now.

.. Brain aneurysm / Stroke.

Update: Marc Marotta died from brain aneurysm

By Jay Sorgi. CREATED Apr 8, 2015 - UPDATED: Apr 9, 2015 | 12:47 PM
A former basketball player at Marquette University who served in Governor Jim Doyle's cabinet and as head of the BMO Harris Bradley Center board has passed away.

Marc Marotta, 52, passed away on Wednesday.  The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner says Thursday he died after a brain aneurysm.

The North Shore Fire Department said they went to the Wisconsin Athletic Club in Glendale just after 2 p.m. and found him not breathing.

They tried to resuscitate him for about 30 minutes, but he did not respond.

Marotta most recently served as a partner with the prominent law firm Foley and Lardner.

He played basketball under Hank Raymonds at Marquette, graduating in 1984.  Foley and Lardner said he joined them after graduating from Harvard Law School in 1987.

Marotta became Secretary of Administration under Governor Jim Doyle in 2003.  He also served on the Summerfest and Boys and Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee boards.

Even to his last days, he stayed in tune with the sport he loved: basketball.  He shared these tweets about the NCAA tournament run of a team that's Marquette's archrival, the Wisconsin Badgers.

Ironic that he wore #52 and passed at 52. Wish he had chosen #99, hey?

There are great sadness and tragedy in Marc Marotta's having died at age 52 after suffering a brain aneurysm.

A wife has lost her husband and children their dad.

There are many words each of us could choose to describe Marc Marotta's untimely death. One of them, however, is not "ironic."

To 4everwarriors: I mean no discourtesy and certainly no disrespect toward Marc Marotta's memory or family, but you have written here: "Ironic that he wore #52 and passed at 52. Wish he had chosen #99, hey?"

There is nothing ironic about Marc Marotta's having died at age 52 and having worn "52" on his Marquette basketball jersey.

Coincidental? Perhaps.

Ironic? No.
