I never realized his drinking was a problem while at Marquette.

QuoteBad memories inevitably follow the good ones: Rab under the influence on the bench and unable to diagram a press break in the closing possession against Georgetown, or when Crean had to demote him from assistant coach to director of basketball operations, or when he couldn't bring Rab to Indiana in 2008, worried the scrutiny of the Hoosiers fans and reporters would make hiding an alcoholic impossible.
He was a tortured soul. If you go back to the early days of this board I mentioned a few of these things. I was not bummed to see him go because of the issues, but I'm sorry to see he wasn't able to pull it together. He was at UTEP prior where a friend was Assoc AD. RIP...demons escaped
Wright Thompson bugs me, but that's a great read.
Crean hired him as a favor to his "friend" Kelvin Sampson and he was the only coach who would stay on his staff at MU. Crean lost entire staffs from season to season.

That's not why he was hired at MU.

Wow! Great read! I forgot about him. And people tried to help him...the depths of addiction can really run deep-so sad. I had a cousin with similar issues...he was a great guy too. Thanks for posting
That is a long ass article but very interesting. Sad story.
Sad story, but I couldn't help but chuckle at Crean being Crean: "He's thought about Rab a lot..." A whole lot.
Coaching sucks. Feel sorry for Rab and God knows he did it to himself but downward spiral is not unprecedented. Hope he's found peace.
Interesting article. The thing that grabbed me the most, as if Thompson (the author) was hinting at something, but unwilling or unable to say it, was that Saigon is "a place where money can fix anything, even a clean toxicology report." Does anyone else infer this to mean that maybe, just maybe, there is more to the story than a guy who died during DTs, as Eva seems to believe? Anyway, I found it odd to introduce an idea that brings in a degree of uncertainty.

Nailed it.
I am a friend of Bill W. I know from personal experience that the up and down roller-coaster of getting sober can kill you. After a certain point, detox has to be handled under medical supervision. Someone who has been drinking heavily for many years is cruising for a heart-attack if they just suddenly stop drinking. A toxicology report would show no alcohol, but they'd be dead from drinking just the same.

That also stuck me as being a very odd quote. I doubt there's anything to it, but it did seem strange for the author to throw that out there and then not explain.
This sentence reminded me of someone.
"The best assistant coaches are crazy people, and a few of the best assistants become head coaches."
A well-written piece. Sad story. RIP Rab.
