Marquette University has issued $55 million in bonds through the Wisconsin Health and Educational Facilities Authority to fund building purchases and renovations, including $25 million for a new administration building.

The Brookfield-based authority, which helps educational and health care institutions gain access to low-cost private capital financing and bonds exempt from federal taxes, issued the bonds in late October, said Larry Nines, WHEFA executive director.

The university plans to use the bulk of the proceeds for the administration building. The project includes demolishing a building at 1212 W. Wisconsin Ave. and building a new structure to house administrative departments, which are spread around the campus.

Marquette president Father Robert Wild's office also will be in the new building. University officials expect construction to begin in spring or summer 2008.

The building on 19th street across from Miss Katie's was bought by MU this summer or sometime relatively recent for the Advance team to work out of until the new bureaucracy building is built.

Guess what it's called?

"The 500 building".

What's really sad is I think I'm in the last class that remembers the ATHLETIC OFFICE being in there. Crean's office with its blue and gold venetian blinds. TAAA-CKY.

I remember picking up my Fanatic tickets freshman year (02-03) in a hallway that was probably as wide as I was, with maybe a foot on each side, and I wasn't that fat a kid....well, at least BEFORE my freshman year...

Most creative building name has to go to the 707 Building by far.  I mean the 1212 Building is off of 12th St.  That's way too easy.  The 707 Building is off of 11th.  Now that's creativity at it's finest!

Speaking of the new engineering building, rumor around the biology department has it that once the engineers get their new building they are going to attempt to convert the current engineering building into the new bio building... it needs it bad.

That would be an incorrect rumor. The new engineering building is going to be mostly labs which are in the worst shape on campus.

Did I just go un-noticed? The engineering buildings are staying engineering buildings. As civil engineers, this has been widely discussed in our classes.

The Discovery Learning Center is just that, a Discovery Learning Center. Comprised of mostly laboratories and teaching laboratories.

A couple points of contention
1. You posted that after I posted my comment so no you did not go unnoticed.

2. the administration is telling the bio department that turning it into a bio building is the plan. I was told by a professor and confirmed it with the department chair. So either the University is lying or I don't really know how to explain that.

3. I have been in the engineering labs... they are not anywhere close to the worst shape in campus. Wander down to the bio labs and take a look... they are pitiful. After looking at the undergrad labs walk down to the basement of WLS and take a look at some of the labs they are giving to the Bio professors, they are beyond pitiful. Long story short, your labs are not as bad as you are making them out to be.

I wasn't referring to you Spartan. I could possibly seeing Olin being turned into something for Bio, as I have heard nothing on it's fate (however, it holds our only lecture hall, and two engineering offices.) I do know Heggarty is staying engineering without a doubt.

While your labs may be bad, our Civil Materials lab has been shoved down into a retrofitted Heggarty basement. Full classes cannot fit down there, and no emphasis has been put into Materials, despite it being one of the forefronts for CE today.

We have Geotechincal Engineering Lab taught in a regular classroom now because the labs are in such terrible shape. As you can imagine, it's not like learning for an actual lab when everything is simulated.

I can vouch for the civil materials lab as I am taking that class now.  Absolutely horrible and the basement is poorly laid out for any lab space.  It's barely capable of being used for storage, let alone an actual lab space.

Next to Marquette Hall and Gesu (literally), Johnston Hall is the nicest and most recognizable building on campus.

1212 is a dump and should probably be torn down. I can't believe they paid an architect to design it.

We didn't.  The 1212 building was not originally part of MU's campus.  In fact there were dental offices there decades ago.  MU bought the building along with the one that used to have Grebe's, etc....remember the old University Store....that was all non-MU stuff which MU then bought.

I'm not sure I'd call Johnston the third "nicest" building on campus, as much of the interior definitely shows its age. In terms of exterior architecture and charm, however, I'll give you fourth nicest.

Let's give the St. Joan of Arc Chapel the props it deserves, eh?

I would like to point out the fact that the picture is most likely of a co-ed who probably did already find the ice cream machine in one of the buildings.  It appears she has put on some weight since arriving....sorry if she or anyone she knows posts on this board...a little bit of a muffin top going...

There's another banner that they hang on the Hegerty Museum (so you can see it from the MU interchange).  They might be able to hang the 1212 banner on the west side of Straz Tower.

If so, thank God. I spent a semester in Humphrey (Fall 05) and I think that housing right now is elderly-specific or something. Like low rent apartments targeted towards elderly people. I know it sounds petty and there are bigger issues at stake, but damn, EVERY SINGLE NIGHT at like 3AM there would be ambulances and fire trucks out in front there right in front of my window. Made it really difficult to get a decent night's sleep.

The university has also bought the Newbridge building across the street from the AL (next to Hegs). That craphole was my residence my senior year. Its demise I'm sure saddens MUfan12. Lotta history in that apartment. While Beer Olympics and pre-game Marquette shots dominated, I think the best part was when after graduation and packing up the car, my folks said they would be making a pit stop at the Cheese castle for a bathroom break. I offered the bathroom in my apartment (which may have been cleaned twice since we moved in), and my offer was flatly rejected.

Does anyone know what the plan with Sensenbrenner Hall is once the new law school building is built?

Like Johnston and Marquette Hall, Sensenbrenner is a beautiful old building, and I'd hate to see it go. With the exception of the law library (which is a dump), I remember the rest of the building as being in pretty decent shape.

That could end up being a nice space for humanities/languages/social sciences classes--maybe pave the path to eventually get rid of Lalumiere--Eyesore #2 on MU's campus (behind the soon-to-be-demolished 1212).

Not sure what you're reading into that PRN. Lived in McCormick my freshman year, had a fair number of classes at Johnston, so the natural stop my freshman year to pick up a newspaper or a magazine was that place.

I thought you were referring to the use of the word "dump".

Have they done a remodeling of the old classrooms inside Johnston Hall? I remember them being in pretty bad shape back in the 70's.

Doesn't look like it... but Ive only had one class in the building, the strange room on the first floor with no clock and a step in the front of the classroom.

I actually bought a lot of newspapers and college basketball magazines there.

Why does that post make me want to go to the bathroom?
[/quote]

Not sure what you're reading into that PRN. Lived in McCormick my freshman year, had a fair number of classes at Johnston, so the natural stop my freshman year to pick up a newspaper or a magazine was that place.

Not sure what you're NOT reading into my post.

Newspapers + college basketball magazines = bathroom reading materials!

Gotcha. Long night last night.

GO WARRIORS!

The campus is so nice now....the 1212 Building used to be the highlight.  Grebe's was the place to bounce a check while getting a French Cruller.  The U Store for b-ball apparerel.  I remember going to Dr. Ei there, an Opthamologist, for a scratched cornea via a hoops game in the Old Gym.  Public Safety was on the street level.  You could see the NCAA trophy in the Athletic Department office, if I remember correctly (on my way to see Dr. Ei for my eye).   1212 was right next to Schroeder Beach!

"The new Marquette University Law School building will occupy a prominent spot overlooking the Marquette Interchange, symbolizing the school's mission of reaching out to the community."

i know this is only a concept, but here ya go.

it looks like it would occupy the open land south of the parking lot behind the existing buildings.

i thought the parking lot was going to be lost during the construction b/c it is suppose to be so big?

This is cool, but I hope they add some traditional architectural elements. MU has done a good job the past 10 years giving the campus a more cohesive look. I'd hate to see them go too modern with this one. (I'm sure there are people who design buildings that know way more about this stuff than I do).

Also, this is going to take up some of the little green space that MU has (which is too bad), but I guess that is a small price to pay for the new building (that is really needed).

By judging the picture, it looks like the glass facade will incorporate that "Marquette" look given by Marquette Hall and the new library. It is just done in glass, not brick. This is more apparent on the left hand side of the building as well.

Unfortunately, Marquette traditionally will not keep with a campus theme, Cudahy, Lalumiere, and the science buildings. However, I think the current administration isn't that way.

The green space that it will occupy is probably the least used on campus. Other than being the site for a surveying transverse, I've never seen a single kid over there. Too close to the free way, and it's a large sloping hill.

Yeah, Torre Hill was never used much, outside of the occasional game of Frisbee, but anytime you give up green space, you can't really get it back. It may not have been used much now, but at least it was available.

I'm guessing (or at least hoping) that MU has a cohesive campus plan for all of the buildings and dormitories. I hate to think that each of the schools is simply out for their own interest instead of what is best for the whole University.

Campus look and feel will be very important for MU in the next 10 years. If MU wants to keep moving forward to becoming a more elite school, the campus facilities (dorms, school buildings, apartments, etc.) will need to continue to be upgraded and continue to create the right "feel" for the school.

Go figure the 1212 building would get a 3 page thread on a basketball forum! Haha.

Losing the green space shouldn't be a problem as a new green space was created in the location 11th Street used to occupy. (For those of you who haven't been on campus 11th Street has been moved to "wiggle" around to the east side of Carpenter Tower leaving a pedestrian mall between Cobeen and Carpenter along with more green space by the law building.)

My friends and I have used Torry Hill numerous times. The big tree in the middle was great for splitting it into 2 separate snow football fields. The new wiggle can't replace it unless it gets about 10 times bigger.

Last year the building behind O'Donnel Hall was torn down and a pretty good size grass field has been put in.  It encorporates the look of campus by having a steel fence with brick beams similar to the pilars seen around campus.

Good to hear. I get back to campus a couple times a year, but rarely walk around enough to see all of the different changes.

Like I said, I'm sure (or at least hoping) that MU has some very smart people working on the long term campus planning and how everything fits together.

MU has done a great job in most aspects over the past 10 years. If MU is as successful from 2007-2017 like they were from 1997-2007... they will be in a very good spot.

I know that the new law school building will be on Torre Hill, but my original question went unanswered.  Since they don't have to tear down Sensenbrenner (the current law school building), what will happen to it?  I can't imagine that the law school will still need it, which means that you have an entire building open for...what?

Anyone know?

I'm currently a law student here, and I can tell you that the law school won't be using it.  That's as much information as the administration has put out.  Sensenbrenner will stick around, but it doesn't have a defined purpose as of yet.
