Title: Christopherson coming back for sure
Post by: MarquetteDano on November 27, 2007, 11:06:45 AM
Not sure if this is already known, but it is news to me.  SC will not redshirt per Rosiak...

I thought Matthews showed great offensive aggression in the game against Duke.  Wasn't there that one play where he crossed some dookie up and took it strong to the basket?  Even Bilas and them thought it was McNeal, who is doing a great job playing strong and emulating D. Wade's commercial - he ended up on the floor after driving so quickly to the basket for a lay up at least 2, 3 times per game in Maui.

And while I know a lot of people talked about redshirting Christopherson in the beginning of the year prior to Mbakwe's injury, this is probably ultimately the best option.  We have an even deeper rotation with the front court now and another guy with a hopefully reliable jump shot, and having CS for the next 3 years will open up more spots in the front court down the road, especially with Taylor and Williams coming in next year.

With Mbwakwe available for the next 4 years and Barro leaving after this year, we will hopefully have the foundations of a better frontcourt.  Yes, Mbakwe would have made a huge impact on our team this year, but we'll need him more than Christopherson down the road.

Considering our struggles to knock down the open trey for most of the early season, I think that Christopherson will be a great asset to have coming off the bench for 10-12 minutes a game.  IMO, Christopherson will finish the season as one of top three point shooters and, unlike Fitzgerald, he should be able to create his own shot off the dribble if needed.

Against our two best opponents (OSU and Duke), we shot the 3 very well.

OSU:  11-17, 64.7%

Duke:  7-15, 46.7%

I don't think we'll shoot it that well all season, but our perceived inability to hit the 3 has been overstated here and elsewhere.

As long as the right people are shooting the majority of the 3s, I think Marquette can have a decent %.  To me the green lighted shooters are Fitz, Cube, and maybe Acker (I'm not sure if his increased % is a result of luck.)  They are the only people shooting above 30% on the season (to be fair, DJ is shooting exactly 30%).

If Acker can keep hitting treys, I'm not sure how much Christopherson helps this year.  That said, if Acker regresses to his previous % of 2005-06 (30%), I think Scott's presence would be crucial in BE play when teams collapse on us and dare us to fire away from the outside.

One of our biggest challenge is to get Fitz to be agressive and shoot when he is open, a very passive player and especially being a 5th yr senior. I think SC will be more assertive if he has a chance to get his legs and some minutes.

Scott told me today he's hopefully 2 weeks away from coming back.  He still walks with a pretty noticeable limp though, so we'll see (at least down stairs).
