Title: This Week's Rankings
Post by: Pardner on November 25, 2007, 09:09:09 AM
With Louisville, Tenn, Indiana, Oregon, and Gonzaga all losing...and after two great prime time ESPN appearances, I see MU actually moving up into the Top 10 with Duke.  MSU has been lackluster--only keeping it close to a very banged up UCLA team....Texas A&M will definitely jump into the Top 10.

Rankings at this point in the season don't mean stink.

I agree with the exception that it gets you some hype on ESPN and high school kids like seeing that.  While rankings are meaningless when it comes to records and who is actually better then whom, I still like to see us ranked high for the pub aspect.

I do agree...interesting to see though how we rack up early on and to discuss...Pomeroy has the Badgers as #1 right now, to your point.  RPI doesn't make sense until the conference play begins. (Pomeroy has us at #26).  Crapshoot.

As Freeway says, pr is the most important thing right now.  A little hype at the start of the hs season doesn't hurt.  I do think we are a Top 10 team right now....I don't know that we will be there at the end of the BE season--more in the 15-20 range...although Louisville isn't going to be #2 in the BE with their injuries and chemistry.

it is all about the hype... as much as we all hate ESPN for loving Duke and favoritism and all that garbage. HS kids watch ESPN and dream about being on Sportscenter every night and they pay close attention to it so if we can get on there a little more and get a little more pub its totally worth it even if it means jack squat

If we beat Duke I think we could be looking at a 6-8 spot in the rankings this week.

With the loss though, I don't think we will move very far in either direction in either poll.

Rankings are very important because you get way more exposure on TV.  If you want to compete on the national scene you need top notch talent and if you want top notch talent you need every advantage you can get.  The more your name or team gets seen on tv and in print the better.

i know where some of you are coming from.  It matters where we are at, at the end of the year and some of you will always quibble about whether or not we are actually a top 15, 20 or 25 team but frankly your missing the point.  Don't take it so literal.  Being ranked 15th does not really mean there are 14 teams better than us and than everyone else is worse.  It means we are very good club and it pains me to see that the national media and coaches give us more praise than some of our suppossed fans that post here.  We are not an elite program but anytime we can get even the smallest amount of good exposure, you need to take it run with it.
Title: Gary Parrish's Top 26

We will see if the real polls follow suit but Marquette stays at number 10 and Louisville drops to 14.  Duke moved up to 7 by beating us.

Quote
Marquette - The Golden Eagles' only loss came in a close game with Duke, and they shouldn't be penalized for it.

Louisville - It appears those injuries to Juan Palacios and David Padgett won't be simple to overcome.

Looks like we fell 1 spot to 14 according to the ESPN/USA Today Poll.  Maybe we're 12th in the coaches?

ESPN/USA Today is the coaches poll.

I just realized Parrish references Jim Burr's poor call in his rankings.

A controversial call allowed N.C. State's Gavin Grant to sink two free throws in the final second and give the Wolfpack a 69-68 victory against the Wildcats.

Yes my mistake.  Speaking of which:  Does either poll outweigh the other?  I've always wondered but never asked.  I mean, why can't they just do 1 poll using coaches and the AP?

The AP hasn't been released yet... 11 was last weeks ranking, take a closer look... none of the losers moved at all and Duke is still 13, theres no way we stay ahead of Duke
