“Redrafting” the 2013 Top 100

Marquette's class of 2013 was the recruiting crown jewel for then Coach Buzz Williams. He had brought in talent before, but 2013 promised to be the best class of his tenure. The class featured 5 players, 3 in the top 100, 1 JUCO All-American, and 3 star PG out of New Mexico who was considered [...]<img alt="" border="0" src="http://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=painttouches.com&blog=28348875&post=13198&subd=painttouches&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" />

Really enjoyed this, and I'm not a "recruiting geek."

Very interesting article ... seems like the first time I have read a take on high school ranking followed by re-ranking once they get to university.

Reading this certainly makes a great deal of the commentary on the board seem, well, uninformed.  :)

In which way?

Outside of the major players (Kentucky, Duke, Kansas, Arizona, etc.), Marquette has as many players from the 2013 recruiting inside the top 60 (3) as does Villanova who's first place in Big East play and more than many other schools having a good season this year.

I would argue that if anything the data suggests that despite the development of our 2013 class by and large being on schedule, the loss of our major contributors from last season (Gardner, Otule, Jamil, Mayo) and our two returning seniors not being impact players (Anderson, Derrick) has more to do with our lack of success than our 2013 recruits' on court performance.

Bottom line:  Duane, Luke and JuJuan are playing about as expected for their respective stage of their careers and hopefully will become more accomplished than the likes of Juan and Derrick by the time they are seniors.

I'd be interested to see which 3 star recruits have outperformed the top 100 kids.  Look at Nigel Hayes.  Easily playing like a top 50 player.

I guess the question I'd like to raise is why is the consensus top 10 class of 2013 completely discounted my many yet the incoming consensus top 10 class of 2015 viewed as manna from heaven?

Seems like expectations should be tempered somewhat.

Koenig, too.  Loath the Badgers, but Hayes and Koening would probably both be top 40 if they were "eligible" for this re-ranking.

I think because, like others have said, all we have on those high school kids are recruit rankings. Once they get into programs and begin to produce/develop, now you have tons more data to evaluate them.

Koenig was a top 100 guy. Just depends on which rankings you use....he was considered a 4 star......https://sites.google.com/site/rscihoops/home/2013-final
