Agree, right now he is playing within himself, but still attacking and playing solid D.  I wonder if the man to man is in part because JJJ will be playing a lot.

"Playing within himself?"  He's forced action like he always does.  Creates loos for him and others.  Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't.

It was a perfect decision.  He was playing great, but was starting to show a bit of fatigue.  Get him a bit of rest and put him right back in where he can continue to play at the top of his game.

JJJ playing well, when he got tired, he made a few mistakes.

LOL. Look at the sub patterns. 2-3 minute stints for JJJ, Duane and Sandy.  Meanwhile Derrick stays in. probably for his FT prowess, as we are in the Bonus.

That Derrick turnover hurt big time. Had possession, then lead to a three.
Title: Re: Seton Hall Game Thread
Post by: NersEllenson on February 07, 2015, 11:59:08 AM
Like what I just saw from Wojo - On possession that ended with turnover on over/back violation.  He said JJ:  "If you are open, shoot it."

Even though JJ struggling from 3, and missed a few today, good of Wojo to reinforce if he has a look, he wants him to shoot it.

I think second half Sandy needs to play more because sh will adjust to stop penetration. So someone will need to hit from outside. I think they said JJJ is 18% for the year from 3?
Title: Re: Seton Hall Game Thread

MU 9 for 17, with two front end misses(Derrick) on free throws.  SH just as bad though.  Pitiful to watch on line.

Missed five baskets within two feet, including three layups, in first half already. Every game same thing.

JJJ (less his headband) played well, but missed two wide open threes.

SH playing terrible, just terrible.  Gibbs with foul trouble, hope he doesn't go ballistic in second half.

Should be interesting second half.

It is interesting to say the least that this is the best we've looked in awhile.  Like him or not, JJJ forces a lot of action.  He's a lot better going to the basket than Carlino, and forcing help in that regard - which has helped Luke.  Obviously Carlino WAY better of 3 shooter.  Defensively, we are a better team with JJJ playing in Carlino's place.

Do you really believe a college basketball player gets tired 4:15 seconds into a game?

Could you recap for me the "mistakes" JJJ made in the first 4:15 of the game?

#mubb 30-22. MU: 45.7% eFG, 23.5% OR, 21% TO, 74% FTR. SH: 33.9% eFG, 37.5% OR, 30% TO, 32% FTR.

Offensively, not a good half for #mubb. But, delightful defensively with Seton Hall's 30% turnover rate and 10.5% 2FG%.

I still think if MU made half the bunnies they missed this year, this team is at WORST .500 in BE and still a chance at an at an at large. This certainly is not a good team, but the line is quite fine.

Good point on our defense today. The main knock on jjj was his matador defense. We've been pretty good as a team defensively with him out there big minutes.

The obvious mistake was a forced drive early in the shot clock into 3 defenders that led to a TO.  He also, started to gamble again on D, instead of playing position.

Yes, they do get tired after 4:15 if they are playing hard.  They then need a very short break and a little water.

Are you kidding??  Please go quote a post from this whole thread where I've bashed Derrick??
If you can't handle a little humor on the "assist" comment please - stop being so hypersensitive.  I even wrote it was a good cut by Derrick to get free for the layup...

And I don't say how "great" JJJ is - just saying what is true - he forces action..sometimes good, sometimes bad - but you need guys who are playmakers.  If you are on the floor with Derrick and Juan - you want either of Duane, JJJ, or Luke launching your shots.  Just the way it is.

At what minute mark will we start holding the ball and playing not to lose? I sure hope wojo addressed it and we stay aggressive early in the shot clock!

Also I would add that JJJ missing a drive is no different than Carlino missing a bomb. It is what he does well and we want him to do it.

Derrick has taken four shots as the clock expired so far, he is 0 for 6 in the game.

I just don't get this offense for MU.  Just like last game, playing with lead and just passing around at top, then shoot one up with seconds left.

Here comes Gibbs......

It is extremely frustrating.  Why not work the clock while going inside out, or passing and cutting, at least trying (with patience) to get open looks?  Waiting til the last 10 seconds, especially w/o Carlino, can't possibly work.

You're right. There is more, you can penetrate for assists as a pg.

Pounding the ball at the top of the key isn't a value add.

Well we have 7 players and he also has 5 boards and 5 assists and a few of those shots were to beat the clock.  Scoring is not the only way to impact a game and we all know his limitations offensively.

I wanna know, what could MU done differently given their personnel?

Twice at the end we broke the press and had 3 on 1 and 4 on 2 and chose to pull it out and run time 5 on 5 rather than attacking the goal.  That is playing not to lose rather than playing to win.

There were about 4 possessions under the 5 minute mark where we broke their press and had 3-1 and 3-2 opportunities and Derrick didn't attack them.  JJJ and Duane did.  But we gave away about 4 good scoring opportunities in order to run clock and get terrible looks with a much higher degree of difficulty than what we could have had in the 3 on 1 and 3 on 2 looks.

We had a 3 on 1 and a 4 on 2 after breaking the press on two separate occasions with over 4 minutes left in the game and we pull the ball back.  This with a team that struggles to score and doesn't have their best scorer for the game.  Played not to lose down the stretch.  Then to top it off we create a turnover and don't even get a shot off in one situation and I think we had to force up a bad shot with another.  Played not to lose.

Twice at the end we broke the press and had 3 on 1 and 4 on 2 and chose to pull it out and run time 5 on 5 rather than attacking the goal.  That is playing not to lose rather than playing to win.

And then Wojo called timeout and told them they still need to attack when they beat the press.  Next possession, JJJ broke the press, attacked as Wojo told them to and scored.

A couple TOs hurt us the most, TOs are usually 50/50 good defense and poor choices.

They got a pretty darn good look there to tie the game, and appeared as if we had a chance to foul.

Agreed. MU should have fouled and had the chance to.  Also, credit to SH for its last possession.  Helluva pass from OB and then the quick TO, followed by the open look 3.

According to this Wojo did want to foul.

They did want to foul.  Right before the in-bounds, the TV had a shot of Wojo talking to a ref.  Lip reading, he said to the ref "We are going to foul, we are going to foul."

MU just couldn't get on the Pirate player quick enough.

Good to hear. At least we have a coach who gets this important process at the end of the game....unlike the previous coach. I do think we had time to foul Gibbs on the inbound pass and could have avoided the unnecessary heart skip.
