Matt Carlino is Sting. He's John Fogerty. He is, for everyone born after 1990, will.i.am.
As far as we know, Carlino's attempts to carry a tune don't go beyond putting his phone in his pocket. What he shares with the aforementioned trio is an obvious level of talent in their chosen medium. For Sting, John and will, it's music. For Carlino... https://misix.com/solo-act-not-working-for-marquette (https://misix.com/solo-act-not-working-for-marquette)
The problem, as I mentioned in an earlier thread, is when he hits a couple shots he abandons all thought of team play and starts gunning (and it seems, turning the ball over) at a clip that is unsustainable as far as winning games is concerned.
There is no doubt he is a talented scorer, but i have a feeling that he's not the type of player we will see at Marquette once Wojo puts his stamp on the roster.
Good point PRN. The thing I would like to see from him is less attacking the basket. He turns it over so often when driving the lane.
Does MU stand around when Carlino hits a few shots because they know he's going to chuck it again?
OR
Does MU stand around when Carlino hits a few shots because they're deferring to the senior scorer?

It certainly doesn't help when no one else is hitting shots. Someone has to carry the scoring load. While Carlino certainly does take some ill-advised shots when he gets on a hot streak, it might be easier to get him to defer if he saw others sharing that load.
Some on this board are really going off the hinges - questioning how much Carlino shoots? On this team made up of awful shooters?!?! Seriously, he almost single handedly beat GA Tech, and single handedly gave us a chance and kep the Xavier and St. John's games close. ANd he does pass enough, if you don't think he does, then you're not paying attention. On this team, he has to shoot a lot, and when he's hit a few, he has to do heat checks.
This team would have about 5 wins without him.

I agree that Carlino has been a huge plus for us. If anything, the problem is that he's often going it alone. If we had even one other guy capable of stepping up to his scoring level regularly, we'd be in much better shape. The only one that has really shown he can is Duane, but he's been more than a bit streaky.

Deep down Carlino knows it's on his shoulders this year against good teams to make us competitive at all. Sure some guys can do it for stretches (Fischer, Duane, and Sandy), but he knows they're too young and raw to be consistent.
Carlino is an incorrigible chucker. At this point he is pretty much on par for his career and I have accepted it as a given on our team. Right now our performance is a reflection of his performance. We need another guy to step up for us to be more of a threat to win. I am looking for Duane and JJJ to fill the void. They both have real athletic talent. If they do, Luke will be able to make more of a contribution.

Well that "incorrigible chucker" as you so often call him, is the only reason we're not at about 4-14, 5-13, right now.
You really want to keep ripping how much he shoots, or do you want to come back to reality?

They do have real athletic talent. Right now, neither has a consistent jumper or even a semblance of a mid-range game.

He's been huge, I'm not sure he's been quite that huge. He won us the games against Georgia Tech and Creighton, but Carlino has more often kept us in games we ultimately lost (UW, XU, SJU) than those games he really won for us. You could also pretty solidly argue that he had a big hand in losing that DePaul game for us.
Carlino giveth, and Carlino taketh away. I would agree he's given more than he's taken, the real problem is in those games he nearly won for us, no one else stepped up to bridge the gap between victory and defeat. Kid can only do so much on his own.

+1
At the offensive end, HE'S ALL WE HAVE!
Is he perfect? No, of course not. But show me another legitimate option. Duane? Sometimes and probably in the future. Luke? Did you watch him at MSG? Two words, weight room. JjJ? My mom taught me not to say unkind things. Sandy? Maybe yes even as soon as later this year and starting to earn meaningful minutes including 16 second half the other night. Juan, Derrick or Steve? Please. I love those guys but even they'd admit they're not option 1 or even 2.

Did you noticed the game after Carlino's best performance this season and how he played? He played team ball. He can be coached but unfortunately there has been no consistent alternative to him on offense. I agree he looses the ball often on drives that are out of control. Unfortunately most everyone else that drives has similar problems with the added feature of passing, with no fakes, even when the receiver is covered. We often telegragh passes and at times throwing it directly to the defender or do not pass and drive directly into a defender. We need a couple of people to step up, like Duane , JJJ, Fiescher or Sandy on a consistant bases. Until then it will be business as usual. Carlino has his issues but he is the least of our problems. We just expect more from him since he has been the only consistent bright spot.

This really stands out for it's irrationality, which is saying something around here these days.
Do you not notice how, when Carlino hits a shot or two, our entire offense becomes about getting him more shots? Running him off multiple screens? If you'd noticed that, you'd have no other option than to come to the conclusion that he's playing the role designed for him by the coaches. He's not just going out there and throwing up a bunch of shots to "get his" or whatever other nonsensical term you probably want to use. HE IS DOING WHAT THE COACHES ARE ASKING HIM TO DO, WHAT HE WAS BROUGHT TO MU TO DO.
When he inevitably goes cold it's ugly to watch, and IMO my only criticism of the coaches is that they need to do a better job of transitioning out of "Full Carlino Mode" more quickly when he starts missing/forcing too much.
I agree that the team's performance is more or less a reflection of his performance. That's just what it is this year.

It would be great if Duane and JJJ could get it done. Thank God Carlino puts the ball in the air. JJJ has virtually no outside shot, Duane has potential. This team would be in deep sh## w/o Matt.
