Me and some other Road Warriors are going to the X game on Saturday. I have never been to Cincinnati, what should I expect? What should I do? Also, if anyone is going from Milwaukee, can you bring a Real Chili bumper sticker to post it on a Skyline Chili?
Went to a couple games at Cincy, but never Xavier. Downtown was pretty dead when we were there. We had our fun across the river in Newport.

I will be at the game on Saturday with another fellow alum so there will be some representation there.
A lot of decent microbreweries have popped up in the last few years in and around downtown.
Xavier is kind of in a bad neighborhood so not sure what is close by.
Also, heard their fans can be a-holes but you get that a lot of places when you are the road team. Butler was actually some of the nicest fans I have been around for a road game. But no matter what they can't be bigger a-holes than Syracuse fans, have met very few who would qualify as decent human beings, especially at the elite 8 a couple years ago.
Xavier is not in too bad of an area, arena is nice, but nothing to do around it either before or after game.
Restaurants - Montgomery Inn (Boathouse), or across river to Newport on the Levee (or places on river in front of it).
Upper scale - try Dee Felice (Covington - northern KY).
Nightlife - Mt Adams or Newport on river.

Arent like all Jesuit universities supposed to be in bad areas? Or did it just kind of work out like that for most of them?

This is the case for a couple reasons.
1. The land in bad neighborhoods was cheap
2. The Jesuits are all about helping the poor and they focus on urban education
I'll be making the trip down from Detroit for the game/victory. A bonus is that it's supposed to be 50 degrees and sunny on Saturday. Should be a fun weekend.
Any pregame plans? I know that when I went to the MU/UC game a couple years ago the pregame was at Toby Keith's, is that still the Cincinnati hang out?
If you all have extra time, you should look to visit the Over the Rhine area. New, improved bars and restaurants and some boutique-type shops. There's also a newer casino in the area.
Recommendations: Bakersfield, Taste of Belgium, Senate, Japps, Reinhaus

It's a bit deeper than that. They're in bad areas because oftentimes the school is located in some of the oldest parts of the town...which therefore have a higher tendency to become poorer areas. But this is not always the case.
Georgetown is one extreme exception to this.
Headed there as well. There is nothing on campus (bar-wise) and with the early start I think we're gonna go right to arena. Our plan afterwards is to go downtown or across the river into Kentucky for post game beers and food.
The campus is not "kind of in a bad area." The surrounding areas may get somewhat shady, but so do Marquette's. Xavier is much more secluded and it's own little subdivision type setting. I really like the campus actually.

If you don't mind getting harassed Dana Gardens is a Xavier bar and isn't too far from the campus. Not sure what time it opens since the game is a 12 start. Was there one time and it is a complete hole in the wall dive bar. If I remember correctly they had PBR and High Life on tap.

We went there before the Creighton/Xavier game last year, don't remember getting harrassed. Some dudes tried to trick us into taking shitty shots but since we are creighton people and drinking is just something we do it backfired on them.
Be careful of those Xavier fans though. One thing I noticed about them is that they are too nice and it builds up all this BS karma and then they beat you. Everyone was nice and, hell, I got a free beer at the arena.
I think we went downtown after the game. There are food optiosn but it was pretty quiet if I remember. We tried one restaurant but it was shut down for a private event (Saturday ngiht dinner seems like the wrong time to be closed). Found another but nothing exciting.
Will be headed there with a few alums as well. If there isn't a standard MU pre-game bar there in Cincinnati, we should just pick one to go to.

Wasn't the Marquette campus one of the nicer parts of downtown 100 years ago? With the mansions and whatnot?

Head north and west of campus and they're still there, on Highland between 27th and 35th.

I wouldn't consider Marquette in a bad area at all. Don't get where that comes from.
Want to visit a new BE arena annually. Had originally planned on doing Xavier this weekend but might have to do Creighton instead.

Should this have been in teal? It it weren't for the University, it would certainly be a bad area. Campus itself and its outlying off campus housing are protected by DPS/MPD, but you don't have travel far in any direction other than east (particularly north and west) to find yourself in a highly undesirable part of town.
Went to Creighton last year and highly recommend it. Absolutely the nicest fans/people I've met. They were so nice it almost made you nervous. Omaha is also all about Creighton which was fun to see. The whole city seemed to love the team and totally embrace them.

It's the "whatnot" that'll get you every time, aina?
I'll be driving from MKE with my son. Never been to X before.
Wade for President reporting for duty. This will be my five year old son's fifth road game (Cincy, L'ville, ND, Butler and X), which I think is pretty damn cool. What's not cool...is that we've lost every game he's attended.
As mentioned earlier, Mt. Adams is a pretty neat part of town. Good location, easy to access, unique part of the city, great restaurants/bars - highly recommend.
Over the Rhine is just a scary area. All sorts of crime down there all the time. Been down there half a dozen times, car got broken into on one of the occasions. If you go, go with a big group and don't drive.

I'm going to venture a guess and assume you have not visited OTR recently. While there are still parts of the neighborhood with crime, the gentrified area is beautiful, clean, and safe. As mentioned earlier, Mt. Adams is a great choice for night life. The Banks (Holy Grail, Toby Keith's, Moerlein Lager House) and Newport (Hofbrauhaus, etc.), KY are also good options.

No. I've never felt that on or around campus. Maybe Im just used to it and it doesn't affect me since I grew up in Chicago.

Yeah there are still bad patches but OTR is not what it used to be. Rhinegeist is a pretty cool brewery that has opened up in the area recently. Plus new places have been opening for the last year.

Probably all the shootings, stabbings, and robberies within 10 blocks of campus.

Dude I grew up at Montrose and Kostner in Chicago till I was 16 and you wouldn't hear me say MU's not in a bad area. Is it like Robins Lawndale or Englewood? No but it's bad enough to call it a less than favorable neighborhood. If it wasn't we A) Wouldn't get plenty of alerts about muggings, burglaries, and the occasional shooting/stabbing. B) Wouldn't have such an obnoxiously big and effective campus police force with Blue light phones and military grade cameras all over the surrounding area.
Just called Dana Gardens and they open at 10 on Saturday so that will probably be our plan unless someone comes up with something better since it's close to the Cintas Center.

Sounds good. We'll try to get there earlier than we initially thought and a grab a beer.

I'll try to convince my crew to head there too. I'll be the guy in the gold "Notre Dame Is French For Our Bitch" shirt.

Have spent some vague nights on Montrose, a lot for sure, but do not recall Kostner. I was never mugged there so I am guessing I never strolled/staggered in that neighborhood.
I'll be there as part of a group of 4. Heading over the river to Kentucky for some postgame festivities.
Win or lose, either way, I get to drink bourbon.
There is a microbrewery called Listermann's across the street (Dana Avenue) from Xavier. It's a small place, but the beer is good. It opens at 10 am on Saturdays.
http://listermannbrewing.com/tap-room/
I think someone already mentioned Dana Gardens, nothing wrong with that place. There's also a bowling alley/bar just off the X campus called Stone's Lanes though i'm not sure when it opens.
Also, if you're looking to go out on the town I recommend OTR or Mt. Adams. Downtown is pretty dead, but there are some bars between the Reds and Bengals stadiums in an area called The Banks. If you really want to go off the beaten path, there's a part of town called Northside (10-15 minutes west of Xavier). There are some nice bars and restaurants there (Django, Northside tavern, Barrio), including a great bourbon bar called Littlefield.
I don't particularly like going to Kentucky, but if generic bars like Brothers or Hooters are your thing then that's a good place to go. Beware (good or bad) you can still smoke in bars in Kentucky.
Our plan for tonight is to go to Mainstrasse in Kentucky. Anyone have some inside info on this place? I've been out in Cinci a bunch so I'm kinda looking forward to seeing what KY has to offer.
A lot of good memories from Dana's Gardens. Enjoy and bring home a W!!
