Title: [PaintTouches]What’s up with Duane Wilson?
Post by: PaintTouchesSays on January 04, 2015, 01:15:06 PM
What’s up with Duane Wilson?

There’s no way to sugarcoat it. Duane Wilson is in one hell of an offensive slump. The 6-foot-3 redshirt freshman from Milwaukee was one of the biggest bright spots in the early goings of the Marquette season. He made acrobatic drives, drilled deep threes, was automatic from the charity stripe, and was an electrifying playmaker [...]<img alt="" border="0" src="http://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=painttouches.com&blog=28348875&post=12791&subd=painttouches&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" />

Hopefully Duane's performance last night helps build some confidence in him going forward and we continue to see production like we saw last night.

I am a huge supporter of Duane but prior to Creighton, he had played below average in the past several games. It did not help that Wojo yanked him with every mistake. Much like JJJ. I do maintain that Duane and Carlino are the only two guys on this team that can create their shop. Fischer ocassionally does, but only against lesser centers.

As Al used to say, the only good thing about freshmen is that they become sophs. There is plenty of talent in Duane, and hopefully it will start to consistently gel this year.

There are only 8 guys on the roster. Wojo couldn't "yank him with every mistake" if he wanted to.

Duane is a very talented player that is getting better in every game he plays.  Experience is a terrific teacher.

I think Duane has been in a funk, since the UW game. I think missing all those contested layups against UW shook his confidence. Now maybe he will get his confidence back.

Go back and watch the Creighton game, JJJ gets yanked after every bad play. I can think of the 1 on 3 when he turned it over and a missed 3, he was out at the next whistle. The 1 on 3 was a dumb play. Everyone acts like 8 players isn't enough. It's plenty. Was it Louisville that went to final four a few years ago playing 7 guys? Cohen barely plays, averaging 9 minutes a game in conference play.

So that was back to back bad plays, not a single bad play and immediate yanking.

Sure guys get yanked.  And then they go back in a few minutes later.

If a player plays poorly, he will find himself back on the bench. No doubt.

But, there is a misconception that if (insert player) makes ONE bad play, Wojo yanks him out. That's not true. Wojo couldn't do that if he wanted to. Like it or not, 7 out of the 8 guys are going to have to play significant minutes, and the 8th guy is going to get close to 10 mpg. Wojo CANNOT yank guys... it just won't work. Guys will run out of gas.

Wojo isn't Mike Deane calling timeouts and pulling a guy. THAT'S what it's like when a guy gets yanked.

But, if (insert player) plays poorly for several minutes in a row, Wojo isn't going to keep him in. He's trying to win games.

I don't think Wojo is yanking them out of the game, it appears to me, to be more of a teaching opportunity. If someone messes up you usually see a coach immediately talking to them when they come out and then a few minutes later they go right back in. Cohen should see more time as the season goes on since if you only play 7 that's 200 minutes a game meaning if all players play equally they would log 28.5 a game. Using Cohen to offset that you can pull that down some since 8 players playing equally would be 25 a game per player.

In case anyone was wondering here is how things have been distributed since we went to 8 players. (Pre Luke in brackets)

Carlino 31.375 (31)
Fischer 27.25
Duane 25.625 (29)
Anderson 32.5 (32.125)
Johnson 22.875 (20.25)
Derrick 32.125 (29.375)
Steve 18.375 (29.375)
Cohen 9.875 (in 7 games actually played 11.285) (12.25)

Burton 16.125
Dawson .5 (only appearred for 4 minutes in opener)

So basically Luke took Steve's minutes and Steve took Burton's, with others fluctuating from between 2 to 4 a game.

My perception may not be supported by the numbers but it does seem that to whatever degree there is less tolerance for bad plays by JJJ or Cohen. Since they are playing less minutes as a rule I hesitate to assign any general practice to this.  As mentioned, Mike Deane was infamous for calling the timeout or yanking someone after a bad play.

you and willie are both mistaken if you think wojo pulls anyone after every single bad play...though you can surely see that wojo has a set of "non-negotiables" and when a player messes up on one of those it becomes a teaching moment.
