Title: Dan Dakich
Post by: Lighthouse 84 on November 19, 2014, 07:45:24 AM
Is Dan Dakich the best college basketball analyst? No, my opinion is that that's Jay Bilas.  But the way many on this board have been commenting during and after last night's game, Dakich shouldn't be allowed to watch a college hoops game let alone be the analyst for the telecast.

Dan Dakich is an intelligent analyst who doesn't sugarcoat something if someone isn't playing well or there's a bad decision on the floor. He's much better than those who constantly tell the viewer that every play is the best play he's ever seen.   He's a lot better than some on this board give him credit and I'd rather have him on a broadcast than a lot of other analysts.

AND, he's embarrassed by the "out of control" program at his alma mater, I4, and isn't afraid to call out the Tanned One.

I think he's a poor analyst.  IMHO, the analyst's job is to explain things that are going on on the court.  Instead, Dakich regaled us with stories about other players in the Big Twelethirfourteen (Kaminsky included), the discord in Iowa (wtf?) and other unrelated crap.  Honestly, I felt like I was watching a game on the Big Twelethirfourteen Network.

He's a huge Big Ten fanboy.  Give me Bill Raftery and several orders of onions any day.

Dakich believes college basketball starts and stops with the Big 10. It doesn't, hence he's poor unless you're a Big 10 fan.

Dan Dakich calls games with gusto, enthusiasm, emotion, passion, etc.

I find him annoying and his voice grating.  After JJJ missed that dunk he joked around about how he had no idea why he missed the dunk when it was obvious that JJJ's steps were off and he got off balance.  At other times he was rambling on about things that had nothing to do with the game rather than pointing out developments and trends.

He was better before he got that sports talk show in Indy a few years back. Now it's hot take after hot take.

Infuriating that the analysts got into a deep discussion about college football in the last minutes of the game. At least stick to the sport you're working! The outcome was decided, yes, but it wasn't a total blowout!

For the most part I appreciated the content of his analysis but it is sometimes hard to appreciate because his tone is insufferable and overbearing. In real life I go out of my way to avoid people who are like this.

Dakich has a call in show in Indianapolis and IMO too much of that show ends up in his analysis.  His show is the typical sports radio show designed to push buttons, get people to call in, say inflammatory stuff, etc, etc.  That's fine for that medium, but it creeps into his analysis as an ESPN color guy.

I thought this line was funny... "The problem was, he didn't dunk it in the open part of the basket."

I think Dakich's game is off because of what is transpiring in Bloomington. How could one not be distressed by the calamity unfolding at his beloved alma mater? Dakich has been heard muttering, "he's trying to wreck our program...he's trying to wreck our program" over and over as he walks the streets at night

Totally agree with this. I was so annoyed I tweeted him about it. Out of respect to the fans watching, please discuss the actual game you are WORKING (or at least the same sport).

Sounds like another ESPN analyst with a "hidden" bias like Dick Vitale.  These guys gravitate towards anything flashy, which seems to be the mantra @ ESPN these days.  Personally, I hate the ever-blurring line between sports analysis and TMZ.  Raftery and Elmore may be the best as they can cite history during slow games, use classy humor, and still have punch-lines that are great catchphrases.  Pair these two with sean mcdonough and its an enjoyable experience.  Of course ...... nothing is better than turning on Marquette Radio and listening to Homer with Jim McIlvaine.  Of course ..... no one can forget George Thomson with Homer.

Why is anyone surprised?   Dakich is who he is, we all know it, and somehow many were expecting something completely different.

Elmore?  Seriously?  Unless you like a laundry list of New York this and New York that.  He's not a flashy sensationalist, I'll give you that, but he's still a pud.  And as a biased MU fan, he was never quick to give us any props.

Elmore sucks.  The only guy who actually makes watching a game more fun for me is Gus Johnson.

Dakich is the basketball version of Johnny Miller. He says what is on his mind. If he sees it, he talks about it. Good or bad. Flattering or non-flattering.

He is the polar opposite of Jim Nantz - the whitest, most generic announcer in the business.

Strictly a matter of taste. I prefer Dakich.

Of course he is a B10 guy. He played there, he works(ed) there. Some people here are so so offended if the announcer isn't 100% MU, 100% of the time.

I think Marquette is treated very well by the national announcers. As they and Wojo were last night.

I get all that, and can accept guys who aren't pro-Marquette.  But why the he!! was he thinking (and thus talking) about Frank Kaminsky, Iowa's lack of team unity and college football during a Marquette-OSU game?

Why was he talking about Kaminsky? It was relevant to the conversation. I believe he was talking about Amir Williams and how some guys never live up to the hype and that transitioned into guys who didn't get the hype but became great players like Lavert and Kaminsky.

Why talk about Iowa? It was a conversation about how teams need to be on the same page if they want to win.

As a basketball fan, I love these ind of conversations and think it adds immensely to the broadcast. Dakich was very flattering to MU and wojo, but, sorry, I don't want just that for 2 hours.

+1

He mentioned multiple times that Marquette is TOUGH and fought really hard, acknowledging we simply didn't have the firepower that OSU had. He mentioned multiple times how well our zone offense worked. He complemented many of our individual players - including but not limited to Carlino, Johnson, STjr, Cohen. He specifically complimented a number of passes/assists our players had, even more so than OSU (other then their irritatingly easy ally-oops).

He's just a typical short-sighted, stubborn Indiana good-ole-boy who is biased towards big ten because that is his only universe. I'm from Indiana - I know plenty of them. They're harmless. He was fine.
