Title: What do you need on your ACT to get into Madison?
Post by: DienerTime34 on November 06, 2014, 09:15:00 AM
Asking for a friend.

Depends. In state? Higher than out of state because they want out of state tuition $. Belong to a group "traditionally underrepresented in higher education" (their words), a lower than if your friend belongs to something that does not describe.

Also, this seems like it might be a Superbar topic.

My friend wants to play sports there. He's from in state.

Asking for a friend.

Depends on how many online classes he'll need to boost his GPA.

Tell Diamond he should be able to get in no problem.

Is it a revenue sport?  How good is he?

And if he can't, there's always Europe for a year.

Asking for a friend.

There are Wisconsin Badger forums that would probably have people who are more knowledgeable on the subject over there.

If it's a football player and he's as good as Ron Dayne then he doesn't even have to be able to read, though.  So I'm guessing not very high.

If he can win them a couple of Rose Bowls, like Ron Dayne, he could have the intelligence of a lawn chair and get in.

Talk to a coach.  This is probably the last place I would check.

ACT is one metric.  Frankly, if your buddy is a minority, top-ten in his graduating class, 3.9+ GPA with a bunch of extra-curricular and service activities under his belt, and his moms are lesbians, then he'll probably get in with a mid teens ACT.

Seriously, though, if he's being recruited for a sport - revenue or not - his ACT isn't going to be as much of an issue unless he has the IQ of a carrot.  Most coaches have a little pull with admissions, some more than others, regardless of whether the sport brings in millions (or costs millions)... if he's otherwise a borderline accept, this could probably be the push he needs to put him over the top.  But if he's sporting straight D's in math and sciences, unless he can score touchdowns or shoot 45% from behind the arc, no ACT score is going to save him.

If he plans on walking on, he's not going to get any special treatment... which probably means - at a minimum - a low-20s ACT (if everything else on his application is stellar) but as the rest of his qualifications regress to the mean, it's much more likely he'll need a high 20's or low 30's ACT to get accepted.

27 and a 3.7 should be good to go for regular students

I don't want to be mean.

But, if you and your friend were discussing Madison's admission standards, had some questions--and decided the first place you should check for answers is MUScoop--then you need to make an appointment with a high school counselor immediately.

Well not only that, but if he were that good at sports, wouldn't the coaches be telling *him* that information?

Friend may want to brush up on his use of Google...

https://www.admissions.wisc.edu/freshman/requirements.php

Either the ACT Plus Writing or the SAT is required. We consider the highest composite score obtained in a single test administration as your "official" score, although we will look at all scores reported in an effort to get a true sense of your achievement. Admitted students will typically score between 27–31 on the ACT Plus Writing and 1800–2070 on the SAT, though again, there is no minimum required score.

Shut it down.  DienerTime34 may have just elicited some of the greatest super-serious responses to a super-sarcastic thread.

Been a while since I took my SAT's but how does the scoring work?  Didn't it used to be out of 1600 (800 in math and 800 in English types)?

Thank you.

My friend has an offer out East that he could accept, but he'd much rather stay home. He's close to his family and g/f and would prefer to stay in state, if possible.

Touche. I should really spend more time obsessively following the developments in recruits who have already removed MU from their list of schools they're considering so I can get interwebs jokes.

(but indeed, yes, you got me)

Soooo... what you're saying is the "he couldn't get in" spin is starting already?

For his "major" the requirements to get in are the same at the east school and local option. Let's not kid ourselves. It's not like the local choice is Harvard.

I must have missed these, has he been rumored to be having problems? If so, where did you read this?

It's the excuse Badger fans are holding in reserve in case he chooses UConn.

Anything about Buzz and VT gets sent to Superbar, and this remains.  Strange.

If he's a CLASS ACT, we'll take him at Marquette.

If not, he'll fit right in at Buckyland!

I heard it a couple places.  He may be in danger of not qualifying, and is working to up his ACT score.
