Title: Keep your Head!!!
Post by: State on November 14, 2007, 11:30:19 AM
Don't think this has been discussed....

I'm more concerned about our teams inability to control their emotions during Monday's game than their lackluster play.  Yes, they had a player (#23) that was up to no good, but James couldn't get enough of it.  After their 'scrum', James and #23 continued to talk shii to eachother...#23 was on the bench and DJ was IN THE GAME!!  Probably wasn't televised but when Barro and #23 got into it, James attempted to run back on the court from the bench but had to be restrained by the coaching staff.  Just what did he think he was going to do??

And then Cube...the guy can't get enough of himself.  The constant chest pounding and stare downs (Monday's was ridiculous) after a three needs to stop.  In the words of Chris Rock, "that's what you're suppose to do!!!"

Probably not a big deal but I saw/heard our bench talking back to the refs when asked to sit down during play.  First I've seen this in my 5 years with those seats...

I know there is a competitive nature to things but who are we so mad at??

What you mentioned about Cubes is what I love about him.  He will get in his opponents face and stare him down.  I love the guy's intensity!

Kind of off the topic a few years back when the guy's had an exhibition game at the AL the players were lined up in the lane for a free throw.  Dameon Mason leaned over and smelled the guy next to him.  Dameon told him he smelled like sh*t and then preceded to own the guy the rest of the night.  I can't speak for others but I enjoy stuff like that.

I also remember the Dmas comment. However, Coobs doesn't quite have the complete game to be backing his actions. We all know how much we hate Grandpa Carl Krauser for his crap, MU players don't need to be doing it either. Especially against Utah Valley State.

I've got to say I'm with State a bit on this one.  I love Cube's intensity as much as the next but I'm waiting for the game when he hits a three, does his staredown, and then gets beat down the floor for an easy layup.  The fact this hasn't happened yet surprises me as his staredown's seem to get longer and longer.  As for Mason's comment, not that I knew about it before but shouldn't he have owned a guy in an exhibition game?

Does the no profanity rule apply to players? Its a double edged sword. Emotions are what make sports so great, but lately I think things are getting a bit out of hand. Frankly, there is too much of this trash talking, stare down, chest pumping, flexing, etc in all of sports. I can't stand it. You see two kinds of it, the true emotional spur of the moment celebrations, and then the pre-planned bring attention to me kind. The latter is the problem. It started at the pro level and slowly worked its way down. I have even seen this behavior in grade school sports. Kids have a hard time realizing that this is a real game, not the And-1 Mix Tape Tour. I think the NCAA has done a good job trying to clean up the game and educate officials on when and what to T up. At the end of the day, the referees and coaches must control the game and players.

I think the NFL is the worst. After every play you have some nonsense like a DB standing over a receiver, or some nonsense by a d lineman after a sack.

Haha yeah that's a good point.  I'm sure it wasn't the most talented guy.

After watching them act like whiners while getting completely manhandled at Notre Dame last year, I'm glad to see them play with some fire.

By the way, does anybody recall the last behavioral related technical foul issued to an MU player before Ooze got one the other night?

Last year against Notre Dame.  I can't remember the specifics of who was involved, but there was a hard foul on an MU fast break, followed by James getting in the face of the ND guy who committed the foul.  Fitz also got T'd up later on.

Even though it may have looked bad and we lost the game, I though both of the T's against ND were justified.   Yes, you want to keep your head in the game and keep a certain degree of control.  But.....some shiNDt should just not be tolerated.

Also, regarding Cubillan...for those who don't like his show of emotion, what was your take on Diener running around with his arms up after hitting a 3?

The last time a MU player received a technical was during the ND game. It was late in the game and Fitz was going after a loose ball in the corner. He beat Harangody to it, and Harangody decided to push him hard out of bounds. Fitz immediately got back up and got right in Luke's face, which resulted in the T.

I was going to say that too.  If you watch the Dwyane Wade highlight video from the jersey retirement ceremony he can be seen posing after dunks and shots as well. Even the calm Steve Novak raised 3 fingers in the air occasionally.  While I realize Cubes is no DWade I have no problem with it as long as he gets back on D.

I thought the same exact thing. There's love for all MU players but both Diener and Novak "showed emotion" like Cubillan after hitting a 3. We all loved it at the time. Is there a reason why it's okay for those two and not okay for Cubillan? I wonder........

I think most people will agree they love the intensity Cubes shows on defense.  Can you seriously ask him to just turn off that same intensity on offense as well?

I think that is what it all boils down to.  It's all fine until we start giving up easy baskets because of it.

Yaa i love cubes intensity off the bench.  You need a player like that to keep the pace up if the starters are starting to look sluggish.  He is a little fire ball when he gets in there and when he runs the point he sets the tone, and so far I like the tone he sets.

No you can't. I'd prefer all of our players have Cubes intensity on both sides of the floor.

regarding the bench sitting down stuff---

it seems that after watching these 3 games at the BC, refs are spending an inordinant amount of time waving the players down onto the bench.
in at least one instance, the ref had turned from the game to direct the 'sittage of butts' and missed a play in front of him.
kept commenting to the folks in front of me that enforcing that rule is going to result in fouls/calls not being made or made correctly.

either they ditch the rule, or T the team after the first occurance if they are that serious about it.

regarding cubbie--- premeditated hotdoggery has never been my cup 'o tea--- his chest pounding gets close to that.
on the other hand, there's nothing wrong with being fired up.
hard to deliniate the enthusiasm from the cockiness.

TD would throw up the three. And get back down the court. Cooby is pounding his chest like a primate, there's a big difference here.

And were comparing TD to Cooby. When opposing teams saw TD do it, they would say, "Damn, fricking Diener again!" When opposing teams see Cooby pound his chest like an animal, "Who the hell is that?, He looks like an idiot."

State-I couldn't agree with you more- you gotta love intensity, but sometimes its a little over the top, but with that said I guess you gotta like it when some of your players can get really excited for a game against UVS

Diener and Wade both got into the histrionics.

Has anyone beaten D.C. down the court after he has scored?

I don't believe so.  Until it becomes a problem, why all the complaining.  The guy plays harder than anyone on the team.  We'd do well to have 5 more guys like Cubillan.

Also, anyone who dismisses the comparison and says "Diener is Diener, we're talking about Cubillan" should look at their stats.  After 1 year, they're pretty similar.

I don't think Cubillan is as good as Diener was, but it's not like night and day.

Cubillan's Freshman Year:  5.5 ppg/55 assists/48 3 pointers (42.5%)

Diener's Freshman Year:  7.9 ppg/86 assists/57 3 pointers (44.2%)

You mean my own thought that I found what was originally said to be questionable?

You're right in that I should have reacted more tactfully in the first place.  But things like that really do bother me.

I agree.

I know all players are different... but be careful that you don't just give one player a free pass while you call out other players.

If you are going to let Deiner hold up the "3" when he hits, then what's wrong with Cooby pounding his chest? What's the difference?

Throwing up threes is subtle. Pounding your chest is much.

I like the intensity, especially when he claps in guys faces, but that's helping his game.

If you support the chest ponding, you have just officially support Carl Krauser and his chest pounding. I just find it annoying after a simple three-pointer. If you want to bust it out after a really good play, so ahead. But let's not get overboard with it after every time you made a stat-sheet.

I guess I see where you are going... but I think you are splitting hairs a little bit.

Showing emotion is showing emotion (provided its not done to incite or show up the opposing team and fans). Krauser's bit was annoying... but as long as he wasn't doing it at the fans or in the other teams face... there isn't anything criminal about it.

Devendorf is an example of showing emotion and inciting the crowd... and that really has no place during the course of a game.

As long as Cooby gets back on D... I don't think it's an issue.

I like enthusiasm.

Somebody made a reference above about Dameon Mason. Culliban may not have Mason's size and quickness, but he is the better player. better outside shooter, better ballhandler and better defender.

How much of Diener did you watch?

It wasn't just the 3 little fingers. There were times where he gave a primal scream at his defender, times when he "twirled" back on defense, and times where he turned and gave a fist punch after a shot. I just find it strange that Coobey's chest pumps (which he did last season) are suddenly a problem and "overboard" and Diener's actions are not.

while I don't really like it and it does bug me, just thinking about it, Cubillan is gonna be a player that other teams and other fans hate. Haha I think you almost want and need one of those guys on your teams, i hate watching other players like that and I know I'm not the only one- guys like Devendorf, Kendall, Harangody- God I hate those players, but now I like the fact that there are gonna be plenty of Big East fans out there that feel the same way about Cubillan.

In either 2002 or 2003, a game at Louisville came down to free throws.  After making the first free throw Travis just screamed as loud as he could.  I believe they came back from a huge deficit in that game.

Diener's scream was in the infamous '03 affair after Ellis Myles tore his quad tendon.  I'd still like to acknowledge that Myles cleared out Wade to get the rebound and Wade did not foul him.

The best show-off was Cordell Henry's "stick the dagger in" after he made the 3 against Cincy in '02.  Probably the loudest I've heard the BC.

The day after Novak hit the shot the Journal Sentinal said it was the loudest moment ever at a Marquette game second only to Dameon's last second shot vs. Louisville in 2004.

Apparently they record the volume.  It wasn't just a guy's opinion.
