Title: Something to think about before Maui
Post by: 🏀 on November 12, 2007, 10:23:26 PM
The last two games have not been great but...

Did everyone forget the close game we had against Hillsdale College before the CBE last year? Hell, Idaho State took us to OT in the first round.

For some reason, this Marquette team will ALWAYS play down to the opponent. Which is fine as long as the game ends up in a W for MU. I don't think you'll see quite the same team come Maui time.

I bet we beat Chaminade by 3-7 points in the first round. Then the team will pick it up against some of the biggies. DJ won't let the national spotlight show up without him.

It does seem like we always play to level of the competition.  Minus the MSU game last year we were in every single game.  Even in that game we erased a large portion of the deficit.

While it's good to be in every game against good teams it would be nice to pull away against the bad ones!

if i really had my choice of something to think about before maui it would be what kind of lotion to bring, where the best happy hr is at, and how to make it to the island of kamanawanalaya  :o.

id think about the basketball shortly thereafter

I think part of that is probably the prep that goes into the games. While I'm sure the coaches view most every game as a must win situation and try to stress the importance to the team, they may not always see it as that. But when the national spotlight has shown on them when all the major pieces of the team have been healthy and active, they have not disappointed.  I agree that we need to start dominating some of these easier ooc games but a sloppy win at least gives them some practice in close games which I'm sure there will be a decent amount of come conference season and beyond.

It's up to the coaches to make sure the kids don't look beyond the first game.

Just ask Ralph Sampson and UVA.

I don't want to be that second team mentioned in the same sentence with the aforementioned player and school.

Not always -- you didn't mention the blowout of Detroit after the escape against Idaho State that gave us the opportunity to play Texas Tech.

Early season (heck, mid-season) games against less heralded opponents are often tough (Kentucky, USC and Georgia Tech say hi). Winning close games at this point doesn't bother me -- losing them, of course, would.

But yeah, I would not be at all surprised to see a close game against Chaminade.
