how do they measure this? by the size of the AA groups around town? party or sober, not on my top 5 for choosing schools though
How is heck is Lehigh the #6 party school in the country?
And what's up with all the CUNY schools making the sober list? Is it because there's nowhere and no need to party on the campus because it would be a waste when you're in freakin' New York?
My wife went to Calvin College. (#4 on the sober list) When she was there (87-91), if anyone in their administration or any RA caught wind that there was going to be a party with alcohol involved, they called the cops and told them about it in advance and requested the cops shut it down early for them and hand out citations.

That's the west side of Michigan for you. Many, many years ago the McDonald's in Holland was the only one in the country closed on Sundays.

West Michigan has loosened up some, witness all of the microbreweries that have sprung up in the last 15 years. The Dutch mafia still has a very strong influence, but it has waned somewhat. I believe that Ottawa county is the last to have the no alcohol sales on Sunday statutes.

My first job out of college was working for Herman Miller in Holland, MI. I went into it thinking it would be okay because my apartment was close to Hope's campus. Turns out a 22 year old fresh out of Milwaukee doesn't quite fit in in Holland. I became very comfortable at the New Holland Brewery, the Irish bar across the street, and the B Dubs for MU games. Also spent many, many hours in the car traveling to Milwaukee, Chicago, and Detroit.
Holland is beautiful, but it's not the place for a young person to live.

Completely agree. When I moved here, it was complete and utter culture shock from growing up in a city with a large public university and then going to college in Milwaukee. Anecdotal accounts of people walking into a neighbor's yard and pouring their beer out on the ground because "we don't allow that on Sunday's" no longer seemed absurd the longer you spent here. It is better than it was 25 years ago, but it still an incredibly insular community in many ways.
BTW, New Holland does a really nice job, particularly with their Dragon's Milk.

Connecticut just ended the Sunday alcohol sales ban 2 years ago. Interestingly, the ban was just some law that went back to when the Puritans settled Connecticut.

That was a big problem back in high school for Sunday keg parties. Having to find a way to keep the kegs cold for a day without our parents finding out was always a bit of intrigue.

I remember having to drive to the Wisconsin border on Sunday mornings and trying to get back for the noon kickoff after we drank all of our beer on a Saturday night. I also thought it crazy that grocery stores etc. only sold 3.2 beer

Growing up in a border town in WI, the liquor stores in WI definitely made a killing on Sundays from the MN people.

That was one of the rationales for changing the law in Connecticut. "Why should sales tax dollars go to New York or Massachusetts or Rhode Island on Sunday when people could just buy here."
During and after my time at MU, I always wondered why Marquette rarely if ever appeared on these lists. I'm not really sure what the criteria was, but I couldn't imagine a school at which alcohol was more prevalent. When I was there and drinking age was 18, the school openly encouraged keggers and floor parties, for cripe's sake. Plus, there had to be two dozen bars within easy walking distance of the center of campus.
Of course, I don't really know what the scene has been like since drinking age went up. Way past my time there.

Friends who would visit from other schools were simply astounded at the amount of alcohol consumed, the casual attitude toward it, etc. Of course, they were visiting from states with a 21 drinking age.

Visiting me for a typical Marquette weekend is what got my brother to attend Marquette. He was 2 years behind me. His senior year I flew out to see him dragging one if our friends from UConn & another from Bryant College on their spring break. They had a blast and could not believe it was a typical Marquette weekend and it was above & beyond their universities. We still talk about "spring break" in Milwaukee.
I had a similar experience. My younger brother and my best friend from HS both went to Michigan State. They came over for a weekend and were blown away by an average weekend at MU.
Exact opposite now. Party scene at Marquette isn't even close to these schools. I hate Madison but they know how to party. Illinois and even SIU's average weekend blow Marquette out of the water.

To all the above posters, you can thank Sheila (nee Haggerty) Turner for being a major contributer to the current campus dryness. (And she didn't even attend MU!)
All it took to have a keg in your room in Schroeder (10s) was to put a call into Chopper, the Pabst rep. Friday afternoon, a keg would mysterically show up at your dorm room.
I also seem to recall that a keg was about 30 bucks. Perhaps the years have distorted my memory. Hard to believe they are over $100 now.

When I was in school (2006-2010) kegs were still only $45. Most times you had a shell to return and there were always taps circulating which made it cheap. I have a brother who just graduated in May and another who is gonna be a junior at MU and I can assure you the party scene is still solid.
Also, I think one reason MU doesn't show up on these lists is because students do a lot of their partying/drinking downtown which wouldn't match the campus/school description.

Students go downtown now? From 98-02, we maybe went to Water Street 1x per month? The only regular spots downtown, was Have a Nice Day Cafe on Thursdays, when someone would win a free beer party from 7pm-9pm, and rock bottom, I think on Wednesdays, had all you can eat wings, and all you can drink beer from 6pm-9pm for $10.
We went downtown all the time (Thursday-Saturday) and then would head back to campus around 1:00am for bar close. And I know my brothers and their friends do the same.
Only time we would stick around campus on a weekend would be house parties then close the campus bars. Obviously everyone has a diffrent experience but from mine and 3 brothers (one older, 06 grad) that was our normal routine.

My oldest daughter graduated in 2000 and I think they went downtown fairly regularly, especially from junior year on when she and some of her friends started interning at firms in the city. We still have an "I closed Wolski's" bumper sticker on the wall of our garage. In the Dark Ages (my time at MU), we didn't spend much time in the city until our senior year (Filling Station, Stone Toad, a few others).
It was all about going downtown when I was a sophomore because fake ids were the newest coolest thing
