Title: Iowa State has Issues
Post by: TAMU, Knower of Ball on June 18, 2014, 01:01:22 AM
http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/11082577/matt-thomas-iowa-state-cyclones-arrested-driving-intoxicated

Second player arrested for drunk driving in the last month.

I know Hoiberg has built his program as "second chance U" but it leads to situations like this. Was curious what people thought of his recruiting style.

Edit: Meant to post this in superbar, apologies!

Matt Thomas is a first chance traditional. Maybe Hoiberg should stay away from those kind of risks.

I don't know if this is a systemic issue of Iowa State.

I mean, it certainly COULD be, but probably a little too early to tell.

However, Freddy needs to get on his guys about decision making. Simple mistakes are fine (they are young), but they have to do better than the average college kid.

Son graduated from ISU last winter and to be honest police do not have much to do in Ames. They mostly look for anything the students might be doing to arrest them. I would say on average there are at least 2 to 3 students arrested every week. From any kind of dumb charges. Ames total population is about 60K, total ISU enrolment is 29-30K.

Ames is a dismal place.  Iowa City feels like a college town, Ames not so much.

If he isn't careful, they will be SLU soon.

This isn't the first time something like this has happened with Matt Thomas. Also curious why you brought traditional into it?

I don't use teal - I trust the audience.

Speaking of Iowa State. I think the over/under on Jameel McKay points per game this year is 11.

You are correct most of the scoring on this team will be by Niang, Hogue, and Nader.

If Nader isn't suspended...

McKay absolutely has double digit PPG potential.

He's probably wearing his racist Blackhawks sweater, so felt introducing race into the thread was appropriate.

Aha! When you first introduced "traditional" into Scoop lexicon it looked, smelled, felt, tasted and sounded race based. Once adamant in your denial, it seems you have outed yourself. Hoist on your own petard.

He average around 19 points in last year's pro am, which indicated to me he was a bench player. Turned out to be an accurate prediction. He did not display much of an outside shot and made about 60% of free throws in pro am.

It's like Larry Eustachy never left.

When else has Thomas been in the news for an off the court issue? Seems like a clean Wisconsin kid to me.

Sounds better than Derrick Wilson. No outside shot and about 47% FT shooting, but he played about 34 mpg. Oh wait..he was an elite gamechanger--per Buzz Williams.

I saw him working out with our guys in a pick-up game off campus last month and he looked like an absolute beast. He can jump out of the gym. I would absolutely agree on double digit PPG. We really could have used him this year.
