LMU transfer Gabe Levin commits to Marquette. @AdamZagoria
-
Shalom bro. Welcome to the mishpuha

Mazel Tov!

Excellent. Great 2nd get for Wojo. He's doing well on the transfer market, now to bring in some freshmen
-
Very nice. He's bound to be my second favorite Jew in MU history after ... well ... after me. (What's nice there is that he doesn't have a tough act to follow!)
I'm WAY too lazy to look crap up from old Scoop streams, but I distinctly remember some tea-leaf-reading yahoos who were convinced that Levin would be transferring just about anywhere but Marquette.
Moral of the story: Unless the tweet says exactly what the athlete is planning, don't read too much into the 140-character musings of a kid!
-
Not that it matters, but folks are assuming as to his religious affiliation. Dude, in fact, went to a catholic prep school, LMU, and now MU. Just sayin'

I'm sure this was mentioned in another thread, but is he eligible to play this year?

I'm sure this was mentioned in another thread, but is he eligible to play this year?
No, will sit out next year and have 3 years of eligibility remaining
-
By practicing this year, hopefully he can step in next year and contribute right away and give our freshman bigs some time to develop. I expect we'll have two freshman bigs added, but Levin gives us a guy that should be ready to contribute from day one next year.
Question: Is he eligible to practice as of day one of the fall semester, or, can he do so this summer if he enrolls in summer school?

I understand that the very existence of Scoop was a deciding factor in Gabe Levin's decision to bring his talents to Marquette. Hopefully one of the moderators is out back polishing up the chrome on Mr. Levin's brand new Scoop Membership. Years of posting pleasure await this young man.
Forgive me but I am getting all verklempt...
-
Sorry, guys. Who is Gabe Levin?
-

And I grew up in a predominantly Catholic town, went to a Jesuit university and married a Catholic girl.

Nice, TAMU. I knew I could count on you.
I'm loving the fact that somebody Notre Dame wanted picked us instead, not to mention that Wojo was able to outrecruit his Dukie buddy in their first head-to-head recruiting battle.
Then again, maybe Brey and Collins just cooled on him.
-
Literally overjoyed. Now I want him to be a crazy star and have a great career so I can rub it into Shumpert that that shoulda been him
-
Won a recruiting battle against two elite universities, that happen to be in the B1G and ACC.
Nice get for MU and the Big East.

He was digging the "Women of the Israeli Defense Force" photo montages and that sold him.
-
Yea, looks like a solid pickup for Marquette.
-
Fantastic. Welcome Gabe.
-
Welcome to Marquette, Gabe!
-
Great get. Excited to see if Wojo can land a couple more bigs to go along with Gabe.

I am assuming he enrolls for the 2nd summer session along with Cohen and Carlino. They will all be able to practice.
-
And I grew up in a predominantly Catholic town, went to a Jesuit university and married a Catholic girl.
Right. Just like Levin's mom might not be Jewish. Gabe is short for Gabriel, one of the archangels. Just sayin'.
-
Much too early to tell, but I see this guy as our first guy off the bench his first year and a starter the 2nd year. This is assuming of course that we don't land some really big fish in our 2015 class.
-
So I guess this leaves us 4 scholiies for 2015?
-
Right. Just like Levin's mom might not be Jewish. Gabe is short for Gabriel, one of the archangels. Just sayin'.
Also the name of the Hebrew Hammer, Gabriel Kapler.

Yes. Assuming MU doesn't give it out beforehand.

Are you Niv Berkowitz?
-
Yes. Assuming MU doesn't give it out beforehand.
Don't worry about that.
MU always makes you pay for an expensive dinner first.
-
This feels like good news. Congrats to Gabe and Wojo.
-
Why can't we discuss him as a basketball player and not because he is jewish?
-
Why can't we discuss him as a basketball player and not because he is jewish?
Because this group is like your dad. Once they hear something they find funny, they repeat it over and over and over and over...
-
Take THAT Notre Dame! ;D
-
Good for Wojo. Welcome to MU, young Mr. Levin.
-
Take THAT Notre Dame! ;D
F Notre Dame.
Glad to have the youngster aboard.
-
I understand that Bamamarquettefan was integral in the strategy behind the defeat of Notre Dame in this contest.
-
Why can't we discuss him as a basketball player and not because he is jewish?
Why can't we do both?
As Sgt. Hulka said, "Lighten up, Francis!"
-
Right. Just like Levin's mom might not be Jewish. Gabe is short for Gabriel, one of the archangels. Just sayin'.
NAME ORIGINS: Gabriel
From the Hebrew name גַבְרִיאֵל (Gavri'el) meaning "strong man of God". Gabriel was one of the seven archangels in Hebrew tradition. He appears in both the Old Testament and the New Testament, where he serves as the announcer of the births of John to Zechariah and Jesus to Mary.
Just sayin'.
-
Great news in many levels. This kid worked hard and keeps improving, and has really upgraded his college experience . A nice first recruiting victory for Coach Wojo , he closed the deal which should help him build momentum with other recruits. We are getting a Kid who has proven he can play and will have a whole year to practice with the team and still 3 years eligibility. Really great day for MU.
-
Are you Niv Berkowitz?
No. I am!!
-
Gabe Levin? C'mon, Doc...
Someone's gotten check for a circumcision scar, hey?
-
And I grew up in a predominantly Catholic town, went to a Jesuit university and married a Catholic girl.
Sure you're MOT? All I'm sayin' is the cat's father could be, but his mother may not be. Maybe he worships the Son and not the Father. Just sayin', ya know?
-
I understand that Bamamarquettefan was integral in the strategy behind the defeat of Notre Dame in this contest.
Since his candidate seems to favor a theocracy - I think "Touchdown Jesus" may not be too happy with him right now ;D
-
Great get. Excited to see if Wojo can land a couple more bigs to go along with Gabe.
So. May we therefore assume this signing has the "Patrick Reed Stamp of Approval?"
-
Enough about religion, if he is Jewish or Catholic, to me the only thing that matters is if he can hit a jump shot. The year off will help, add another big and another guard and Wojo did his
job. I think you should always hold one scholarship as you never know with all the transfer maniacs out there, as well as one back as MU needs to equalize the years. Taylor is the only
junior next year. Is Stone out of the question now? So it is Ellenson and Heldt for a big, but lots of offers out there, Wojo is more like Buzz now? First come, first serve. Wojo could reach
out to 2016 recruits last week, any word?
-
some nice quotes about his game
"The Golden Eagles are receiving a quality player in Levin, who was named to the West Coast Conference’s All-WCC freshman team this past season. Levin averaged 11.1 points and 7.1 rebounds last year, and his numbers could have been even better if Levin did not have to battle injury for a portion of the season."
"Levin showed explosiveness at the power forward position, allowing him to make electrifying plays on the offensive end and rebound out of his area. The 6-foot-7 forward can shoot the ball from long range as well. Overall, Levin will be a really nice pick-up for Marquette with his talent and skill set."
"Obviously, three schools thought that Levin was good enough to play in the ACC, Big East and Big 10, and invest in him for the future."
-

Few knew Gabe Levin last year when was frosh at LMU. Now he's headed to Marquette. Reminds me an awful lot of Dan Majerle.
Thunder Gabe!
-
He's not considered a great outside shooter though. The comparisons to Majerle don't make a lot of sense in that regard. More of an inside guy - not afraid to mix it up.
-
Much too early to tell, but I see this guy as our first guy off the bench his first year and a starter the 2nd year. This is assuming of course that we don't land some really big fish in our 2015 class.
In either case, getting a guy who has proven himself already at the collegiate level, and will have had a year to practice with the team is a great first 2015 recruit. There is a huge difference between high school and college mentally and physically and he has already worked through all of that. He just seems like a kid that keeps getting better to me.

Transfers always work for me, they take a year off to improve, go to school and have fun. Lets see how Duane Wilson does taking the year off last year. I know he has gained 15 lbs., so he
has gotten stronger and hopefully better.
Need a back-up center behind Fisher, now you have a back-up to Taylor or play bigger with Taylor and Burton. JJJ and Cohen might be small forwards in the future. Cohen could use a red-shirt year to bulk up. Maybe that will happen, time will tell. Basketball has to be important to Levin, because Northwestern is a pretty good academic school, best in the area.

You get a lot of Loyola Marymount games there in Indiana? Seems like you've watched him quite a bit
-

Sort of like the Sultan repeating that Buzz played the players that he believed gave him the best chance to win, over..and...over...and over. (Thanks to Thurston Harris)
-
Kind of interesting.
The 3 point shot didn't come into play until Majerle's junior year. First season he only took 8 of them and made 2.
His senior season he took 101( shorter 3 point line) and made 45. He was never a really good free throw shooter in college(65%) though which is interesting.
Gabe shot 76% as a frosh.
I could easily see Gabe develope into a good 3 point shooter (as Dan did) by his junior or senior season although I certainly couldn't predict a Dan Majerle career
Majerle's rebound numbers were similar to Gabe's as a frosh FWIW

ps My guess is Fran has seen him play much more then any of us here

This must make about 30 recruits in a row who have declared that they will be playing shooting guard. Let's see how much of this the past few years has been Buzz and how much is just the nature of the business.
-
Good to see mikehunt is right on top of it, aina?

not to nitpick, but Northwestern has to be top ten in the nation in all fields of study and top five in some.

Never seen him. Just going by various things I have read about him.

Levin will be 20 years old in August. If he did a year of prep school after OPRF, then a freshman year at LMU, then next year will be his third year out of high school. He'll be a 21 year old "sophomore" in terms of eligibility in his fourth year out of high school. There's a big difference between 18 and 21.
I know a lot of guys who continued to grow in college, let alone far outliers like David Robinson and Scottie Pippen that sprouted. And no, I am not projecting the NBA HOF for Levin. Just making a point about how some people grow.
-
ps My guess is Fran has seen him play much more then any of us here
Hah I guarantee I've seen him more!
-
I don't know about Majerle, and I certainly don't know about Levin being a combo 2/3.
Based on the little I saw in the videos, I was thinking a nice thing would be an Eduardo Najera type or Mark Madsen type or Andres Nocioni type. A combo 3/4 who could be scrappy and underestimated athletically and get under opponents' skin. If he develops a more consistent jumper, all the better.
I hope everybody just took note that I wrote an entire post without referring to Levin's religion. D'oh! I just ruined it!!!
-
And this is why I don't update the scholarship table...as soon as I do it changes...
Welcome Gabe...updated again...

*runs in fear of being banhammered for questioning an almighty mod*

Duane is being shown as a sophomore on the official Marquette roster here:
http://www.gomarquette.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/marq-m-baskbl-mtt.html
Is that an error? Or does MU have to submit some sort of application that hasn't been formally accepted?

Good lord, you two are as bad as Chicos and Lenny! Why don't you two get a room. ;D
Maybe we should start a poll to see which of you is Chicos and which is Lenny.

I find the Chicos/Lenny back and forth to be humorous because it spans numerous topics and they're on diffrent end of the spectrum so many times. The Willie/Sultan relationship straight up sucks.

Academically he is a sophomore. Don't they go by that?

Maybe if you would quit with the self righteous smugness which makes you an easy target, I would. But here, it is now official, you are divorced!.

Yeah maybe that's it. It's just confusing.

I think you need to exclaim "I break with you!" three times, then throw dog poop on his shoes to officially declare this over.

Soooo close.
It's "I break with thee, I break with thee, I break with thee."

Thanks for the correction, but I just can't picture Willie using "thee". I can, however, visualize the dog poop part.

I think of him as a second 2014 recruit since his and Cohen's eligibility cover the same years.

Agree with that. Helps to balance the classes.
