I should note that one of the reason McGuire retired was recruiting. When the original Big East was formed he saw his pipe line to New York recruits would dry up. That was hardly the only reason he left but it was a factor..

Yes, I knew the inaugural season was in 1979 but the pieces were starting to come together long before that. I also said that it was only one
of the reasons Al left
