Mine was Thursday, January 9, 1997. Beat DePaul 61-49 at the BC.
Couldn't tell you, but Kojis was playing.
Can't remember the year. But it was against Xavier, who was then a patsie. Do remember, Brell, Meminger,
and Sewell playing. One game I do remember--against DePaul--Joey Meyer was ejected from the game in
the first minute for a foul against Jeff Sewell. Ray Meyer was coaching and Joey had those horned- rimmed
glasses. Looked like a freek..

Thursday, March 13 1969 -
NCAA Mideast Regional Semifinals (at Madison, WI)
MU 81 UK 74
Adolph Rupp, Dan Issel for UK
Al McGuire, George Thompson, Dean Meminger, Ric Cobb for MU
Contrary to the movie "Glory Road" (involving Texas Western beating UK in the NCAA, in 1966), some say it was this game that sealed Adolf Rupp finally integrating his all white UK squad with african american players

Remember it specifically. Marquette vs. San Francisco Feb. 27th 1994. We won 86-65.
Would have been Freshman year for first home game/exhibition game at the MECCA back in 1987.
Upon further review and a Google search it was:
http://goldeneaglefan.com/marquette-basketball/schedule/1987-1988
The University of Hartford on Monday November 30, 1987 and we won 70 - 61.
I now remember the game because UHart was one of the schools I was considering and found it coincidental it was the first game Marquette played against.
Marquette vs Syracuse Senior Day/Incoming freshmen game. Lost in OT. I could be wrong but I think that's the highest attended game ever right?
First MU game was February something 2006 at Notre Dame. I was a senior in high school visiting my brother at MU and one of his roommates scored some tickets so we road tripped down. Our tickets were in their student section and we were all wearing those "Notre Dame is French for Our Bitch" shirts so we ended up getting kicked out of the section because those sissies couldn't handle it and told on us. One of the ushers was cool and showed us to some open seats in the MU section so we finished the game there. Needless to say we won.
First home game was an exhibition my freshman year (2006) vs. Cardinal Strich and obviously my first real game was whoever we opened with that season. 8 years later I'm still a season ticket holder.
12/4/79, a 57-54 win over Fresno State. Had to look up the date, but for some reason I remembered the game and the score. I remember thinking, "We aren't that good" after the game, as barely pulling one out at home over Fresno State was nothing special. I was also surprised that Sam Worthen wore regular Chuck Taylors which he colored in stripes with magic markers, although the Sam Worthen part may be a drunken dream.
I also remember the next two games were losses to Michigan and Wisconsin, both teams featuring guys I played against in high school in Bridgeport, CT, John Garris (Bassick High, later transferred to BC and played a year or two in the NBA for the Cavs) and Wes Matthews And Darnell Reid (Harding High, we all know Wes. Reid was like the 6th best player on those Harding teams, but Wisconsin took him to help land Matthews. Those Harding teams were awesome, also included John Bagley, who had a long NBA career, Mike McKay a four year starter and star at UConn and Cedric Cannon, a D-2 All-American, I think. And they didn't even win the state Class L title.).
can't remember much about the game but it was the mid 90s. My dad and I got my godparent's tix. What I remember most was how my dad referenced Marquette basketball as an "After Dinner Game" - something you attended to talk to your clients or impress the right people, not actually get into. Thankfully so much has changed.
Coppin St in 2003, we won by like 20. It was the first home game during my freshman year. I've probably only missed a dozen or so home games since then =)
Couldn't tell you either. It was against Notre Dame in 1985-86 season.
1990 home game against badgered. I was one. I'm told we won that game. First game I can remember was unfortunately a home loss to Appalachian state
Dec. 1st 1979 blew Eastern Montana away. Same year we beat both Duke and ND while they were ranked #10.
I actually attended my 1st MU game to see someone else. LSU and Florida St. were playing in the 1st game of the Classic and my dad took me to see Pete Maravich. Fun to watch, but he was nowhere near the player that Dave Cowens was.
And then I got to see 'Brute Force' in the 2nd game and have been an MU fan ever since.
Exhibition against the Chinese national team, November 1984.
I was 13, it was January 12, 1974, a win against DePaul. My parents would never spend $ on tickets to any events be it MU or Summerfest or State Fair but a classmate who's father was a dental alum had season tix and gave me a pair for this game so I took my dad. Sadly it was also my last game for roughly another decade.
February 27 2011 vs. Providence. Junior had a double, double and that was really the first time I spent any attention to MU. Probably the reason why I was such a big JC supporter and backer.
Actually thats a lie. The first time I saw MU play was at the Allstate Arena against Depaul. Cant remember the day but I know is was more than a few years back and Depaul won because Sammy Mejia had a monster game. I didn't count that one though cause I was cheering for Depaul.
Final Four year - December 14, 2002 (thanks Scoop wiki). I was a junior in high school, and my dad brought me. He's not an alum, but he knew I was semi-interested in MU at the time.
We beat the Badgers 63-54 at home. Was a great game with an awesome atmosphere and we basically dominated from start to finish. That was the day I decided to attend MU. Seeing Wade, Deiner, Novak, etc. all on the court for MU was pretty amazing.

Ditto. Was it Athletes in Action?
As a UW student in '69 or '70, several of us walked through a snow storm to see the Warrior freshmen play the Badger fresh. I remember Larry McNeil and Marcus Washington matched up against Kim and Kerry Hughes. MU won big.
Crean's first game coaching in '99. Against Nike All-Stars or some other stupid crap.
Marquette-UConn. The Steve Novak game.
Full disclosure: My family had just moved to Illinois from Connecticut and another CT transplant family we met took us to see the Huskies. I was cheering for UConn. Fortunately, I've come around since then.
I don't remember the exact game, but it was in the 1969-1971 range. I know that Dean the Dream was playing and they wore the white jerseys with the number in the navy circle and the vertical side stripe. I was an 8-10 year-old kid--my dad had 2 season tickets up in the end of the MECCA right behind the organ (which went unplayed at MU games). Loved Dean the Dream after watching him work his BBall magic. I wanted to go to MU from as far back as I can remember.
Went to MANY games at the MECCA after that one, whenever I could get tickets. The attendance at every home game throughout the '70's was 10,938, which was the arena's capacity. Those were always tough tickets to get. In the '80's they added a few seats to get it up to 11,055.
I was on the season ticket waiting list when the Bradley Center opened in 1988 and have been to most home games (over 90%) since.
I do not actually know, but I remember watching Dick Nixon, who played 1961 to 1963. I guessing 1962 as that is when my father got 4 additional season tickets.
Dec. 1, 1966. MU vs Aquinas. MU won big.
Northern Michigan, about 1966, Blanton Simmons had 31 and I think George Thompson had about 40 on the freshman team, but not sure I am right there. Foggy memory but a good one.
MU v. DePaul on Senior Night in 2002. I was a senior in high school and had wrapped up a joint visit to UW and Marquette the weekend prior. I honestly chose Marquette because of that game and the atmosphere. I was done.
P.S. The drive back to Chicago after the game was equally memorable thanks to the snow storm.
It was I think 1964 or 1965. I went to see Paul Carbins and have had season tickets since 1974.
March 1972, Stokley Athletic Center at the University of Tennessee. Marquette was playing Miami of Ohio in the first round of the Mideast Regional tournament. Went with my Dad (MU 1955) and my brothers. Up to that point I had only seen Marquette on television.
That was the team that had lost Jim Chones less than a month earlier and there was some question as to Bob Lackey's eligibility. Thank God we won. Great game and showed Al had one tough team.

First Game I attended was MU - Duke played at the Dane County Arena. I believe Duke was ranked #1 or close. I had never been a college BB fan while in college but a buddy had an extra ticket. Once I went I was hooked. I remember a tie up situation with like 10 seconds left. MU got the jump (back in the jump ball days) and won by 1.

I still have that game on tape. I loved how the team after went into the student section.
Spencer Haywood with University of Detroit and I'm pretty sure Dickie V was the coach...
Al won...as usual...the old arena was on fire.
Pretty sure it was Athletes in Action, Nov '76. A season that ended much better than the middle of it! Only missed one game in 4 years.
Sometime in the 1988-89 season. Can't remember the game because I was three. My grandpa took my dad to games when he was a kid, and he thought he'd try it with me. I was hooked, and he bought season tix the next season.
1st game was with my Dad on Saturday, February 13, 1982. Marquette 52, Va Tech 51. He became a season ticket holder in 1987. I got my seasons in 2006.
February 2, 2002 MU beat a highly ranked Cincinnati Bearcat teamed that was led by Steve Logan and Jason Maxiell. D-Wade, Cordell Henry, and Diener took over and won the game.
Feb 2013 vs Syracuse. Most of you probably remember it. Huge win in a close game. Ox was phenomenal, especially from the charity stripe. I was a senior in highschool and this game sealed the deal for me, after being at the game I knew Marquette was the school for me.
Syracuse was always my favorite team, and this game was when marquette gained that #1 spot for me where it will remain forever.

Great thread! Especially love the pre 1970 and post 2010 posts.
Don't remember the game, but it was November 1982 and likely was Athletes in Action (or that year's exhibition team).
I don't remember specifically, but I have a general recollection that MU lost one or two of those exhibition games in the 80's.
I'll guess it was in 1969 or 1970, but not certain.
The earliest program I can find is from January 29, 1971. It was one of the old Chicago Stadium doubleheaders. The first game was Illinois (with Nick Weatherspoon) vs USC (Paul Westphal), and the nightcap was MU (Meminger, Chones, Brell, Frazier) vs Loyola (LaRue Martin). According to my 8-year old handwriting, MU won handily, 87-52.
Some awesome ads - the '71 Gremlin, Riviera, Corolla, Super Beetle and MG. MSRP on the Corolla was $1798. Oh, and courtside seats were $6.

Probably the first home game of the 1978-79 season (my freshman year), but I wouldn't bet my life on that being true.
Obviously, a memorable, life-changing event for me!!
As an out-of-stater, this is easy to answer (though I can't recollect the details or retrieve a memory of it):
the first game of the 1993-94 season.
Probably exhibition...
1/29/95, MU vs DePaul at United Center.
Not a good afternoon for the Deane Warriors.

California All Stars. Exhibition opener in 2000. Got there about 20 minutes before tip and sat in the 2nd row behind the bench. Had a blast.
Sadly, I dont remember who we played for what would have been my first game that counted.
I saw doc rivers win the top over Benoit Benjamin at creighton in Omaha. My next game I remember was sitting behind majerus and the MU bench in Ames Iowa. NIT game. Marquette had Marotta and Iowa state had Jeff grayer and marquette won by 20. My mom and dad and sister and I got on TV during that game

78 Classic. I was 7. No clue who they played or how they did. Guessing they won. Thing I remember was either Raymonds or Majerus let me in the locker room to get the final autograph I needed in the program to get a complete set of autographs for the team. 35-plus years later here we are.
I vaguely remember going to most of the home games in the 55-56 season. Most were in the arena, but one or two were in the Milwaukee auditorium. I do also remember watching the Warriors play the University of San Francisco in a tournament at the old Chicago Stadium. USF had a kid by the name of Bill Russell playing center. He was pretty good. Our center, Terry Rand, did ok, too. A guy now known as "Murf" played alongside Rand.

Feb. 8, 1967 The night Pat Smith set (and still holds) the Marquette single game rebounding record with 28 against Loyola
I can't tell you exactly but I do know that I saw Dean 'The Dream' play in person. My dad had access to a work colleague's season tickets and routinely during the 70s we would get the opening night of the Milwaukee Classic back when Wisco co-hosted and played in game one. So I suspect that it might have been that. If so, a quick look at Wiki seemingly indicates 12/29/70 against Dartmouth.
Oh, and we almost always dined at Chili before the games. I learned young.
I'm editing my response. I really believe it was one year earlier 12/26/69 against Delaware. The reason I say this is I recall having a vested interest in the NIT because I had seen the team play earlier in the year. Final answer.

The newspaper reports quoted Al as saying this was the" biggest win of my career". Fortunately, Al would celebrate many bigger wins after this turning point
Not exactly sure of the first specific game, it would have been my freshman year (1987)... Was there a darker time for MU hoops than my 4 years there? 87-91? With the exception of moving to the brand new Bradley Center there was nothing positive...

First exhibition in 2000 against the foreign team I think. I remember Crean said later at a student event, that he could have picked 5 of us out of the crowd and it would have been a better game. We also played an AIA game that year, I think Streeter was on the team. The first real game was the Preseason-NIT game against South Alabama, ouch.
All that being said, I could have been at the MU-Valpo game at Valpo in 1988. We had season tickets, not sure I was at that game or not. I see in the wiki that Valpo won, which means MU must have been terrible, cause Valpo was terrible then.
I went to many as a young lad as my old man took me to many games but the first I actually remember was 85 when MU lost to number one UNC 66-64. Terry Reason rocking the fro was my favorite player. That was a tough loss along with a tough loss to Dayton that same week. Had the Warriors won those games ( and, they were in position to do so ), Majerus's career at MU might have ended differently.
Not one MU game goes by without thinking of both my Mom and Dad. While neither were exceptional overall sports fans their love of MU ball was off the charts. From 1967-1981 every home game and many road games were national holidays for my family. Almost every game included all of my older siblings, their spouses and my folks. Remembering taking my Dad to game in 2008 or 2009 and was in late 80's and saw a tear in his eye during Ring Out Ahoya...pretty cool for a guy that barely finished high school. Nice story, Goose.
My first was early 60's w/ my dad- believe Dick Nixon and Bob Hornack on the team-can't remember the competition. Like you, Goose, my folks had tickets since the early 60's and kept their 2 long after I had mine in the mid-60's (I later combined them but Marge made me use my seat ranking rather than allowing us to use his)..
Nuke I'm certain that Terry Reason had 'jerri-curls'. Not an afro.
Augo
Reason went from Afro to "jerri curls" during his time at MU. Neither look was very flattering.
Ah, I stand corrected Goose. Thanks. He only had a couple of years before Rick cut him, so I assumed he had the curls the whole time.
MU vs DePaul Milwaukee Arena mid 70's...or was it Notre Dame?
I think it was DePaul with Ray Meyer.
Athletes In Action. November something 1986.
I was amazed at the collection of very tall guys who could hardly walk upright... Copa, Muller, Grosse.
Ah, the Rod Grosse pool. 10 guys, everybody throw in a few bucks, winner take at all, draw a number 1 through 10, whatever is the final number of the point total Grosse scores wins. Anything above 4 was not good.
