Howdy all. I thought this could be a fun offseason topic. I've taken the best of the best from each team in the Big East. Who do you think will be the best next season? Their stats from last season are below for your reference.
Kellen Dunham: 16.4 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.7 apg, 0.7 spg, 0.3 bpg, 2.1 tpg, .355 3P
Austin Chatman: 8.1 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 4.4 apg, 0.5 spg, 0.0 bpg, 1.7 tpg, .389 3P
Billy Garrett Jr.: 12.4 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 3.0 apg, 0.9 spg, 0.1 bpg, 2.2 tpg, .319 3P
D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera: 17.6 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.2 spg, 0.2 bpg, 1.7 tpg .393 3P
Deonte Burton: 6.9 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 0.5 apg, 1.1 spg, 0.4 bpg, 0.9 tpg, .500 3P
LeDontae Henton: 14.0 ppg, 7.9 rpg, 1.7 apg, 1.3 spg, 0.6 bpg, 1.6 tpg, .358 3P
Sterling Gibbs: 13.2 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 4.2 apg, 1.0 spg, 0.0 bpg, 2.1 tpg, .344 3P
D'Angelo Harrison: 17.5 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 1.9 apg, 1.0 spg, 0.5 bpg, 1.5 tpg, .370 3P
Darrun Hilliard: 14.3 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 2.6 apg, 1.3 spg, 0.5 bpg, 2.2 tpg, .414 3P
Matt Stainbrook: 10.6 ppg, 7.4 rpg, 2.2 apg, 0.7 spg, 0.9 bpg, 1.8 tpg, .333 3P
*The hardest teams to pick players from were Marquette, Seton Hall, and Villanova. Todd Mayo, Isaiah Whitehead, and JaVaughn Pinkston all have cases to be named the best player on their team.
DWill
If stats stay consistent, I say player with most team wins (Dunham, Harrison, or Rivera). It's all about scoring.
Deonte Burton the top vote getter? Sad. Give the kid some time to develop his talent.

Besides that you have to believe that if MU has a team good enough to have a player be consider for POY either Mayo or Carlino is going to have a big year. Burton will not be able to carry MU by himself.
Stainbrook wins for most annoying player to watch....

Stainbrook was a junior. He sat out a year transferring to Xavier.

Swing and a miss!
I'm going with Harrison.
Henton and Harrison will be 1st Team All Big East....Mayo has a good shot at 1st Team, as does Burton. Think Harrison wins Player of the Year.
Obviously, I expect big years from Todd and Deonte. Can't wait to see them play this season, playing for a coach that likely will be less nutty with his rotation/substitution "pattern." Pattern in quotes....as there was no pattern whatsoever to Buzz's substitutions last season. Total knee jerk.

The Deonte Burton hype train is getting a little ridiculous. He showed lots of potential and I think he is going to be a great player. He plays very out of control at times though and I really don't think he will be an all conference type guy til his junior year. I think when all is said and done next year, JJJ will have passed him up for the alpha role on the team going into their junior years.

Would be great for the team if JJJ is that good, I would be surprised though, Burton was a very impressive Freshman last year, Freshman being the important note

Agreed. The man (notice: not kid!) would have to make a monstrous leap to be POY. Just not going to happen. I think a realistic goal is second team all conference. That would be an outstanding accomplishment.
As you said, look for a big time things his junior year.
Went with Harrison. If Dunham's team was better I think he'd have a shot. Although with Harrison's team most likely not being great (it's St. John's, c'mon) Smith-Rivera might be the most likely.
Heart - Burton
Head - Harrison

I don't even think Burton will be the team MVP next year - IMO that'll be Mayo.
So we have a lot of homers. Does any of them want to give a reason why they think he will truly be the BE POY?
Other than that, scoop seems to be split between D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera and D'Angelo Harrison. I thought about both of these players but did not pick them. Smith-Rivera is either going to be moving to point guard or will be playing in an offense run by freshman Tre Campbell. I think the lack of a true quality point guard will take away from his performance. Harrison is a scorer, pure and simple. I don't think he does enough for his team to be considered a POY.
I went with LaDontae Henton. I think he is the most well rounded out of all the players in the BEast. Can score, can shoot the three, rebounds like a fiend, blocks shots, creates turnovers. Plus, he is clearly the best scoring option on the team and will get the ball a lot. I think he has the potential to have a Jae Crowder like senior season for the Friars.

I started to vote for Deonte but then realized this was only for BE POY. So I went over to the National POY poll and voted for him!
Can't wait for him to be NBA MVP in 2015-16!
Someone to consider that hasn't been mentioned Is Isaiah Whitehead who's going to be a freshman at seton hall. I believe he is the highest rated recruit coming into the BE this year and he was a McDonald's all American. He will get a ton of playing time on the wing and he's a great scorer, we'll see what happens
The Truth

There have been much more highly recruited players that have entered the BE than Whitehead and no freshman has ever won the award. Not even Carmelo Anthony. Even with the drastic change in conference membership over the last 10 years, it still hasn't happened. I highly doubt whitehead will be the one.

I agree, I would be very surprised if he won it but he at least deserves a mention

FYI...Troy Bell--a senior at BC--took the honors in 2002-2003 over Melo. Nine sophomores have won it though since its inception in 1979 including Mr. Otto Porter in 2012-2013 and Shrek and DeJuan Blair in consecutive years (2007-2008 & 2008-2009). Clearly, Burton is destined to give that underclass designation #10.
Billy Garrett of DePaul would be a good choice. Unfortunately, he plays for DePaul. Smith-Rivera of G-Town could factor into this equation if the Hoyas can turn things around this season.
JuJuan Johnson -- Just to spite the Hillbilly!
Todd Mayo -- Right after he hits the jumper that wins the Big East tournament title game!

You may have noticed in my original post that I mentioned that Whitehead could make a case for being the best player on Seton Hall. I picked Gibbs over him because of the reason that was just mentioned. A freshman has never won the award.

Though he's improved in this regard, Harrison is way too emotional to be considered a heady player. Regardless, he's still one of the best in the BE.
Harrison for now.
It may just as well be OTHER.
I bring this up every time one of these threads comes up but it seems people forget it every time. The BE POY has come from a team that finished top 2 in the regular season every single year since at least the early 90s. It does not go to a player unless their team has success.
So the most likely candidates are Hilliard and Pinkston of Nova. One of those two would likely be the preseason POY. I think Hilliard is the better player but Pinkston seems to have more publicity and name recognition.
I think DSR has an outside shot since I expect Georgetown to finish 2nd. If he puts up good numbers and Nova's team is too balanced then he could win the award, but I expect it to go to a Nova player.
Harrison will be first team but St. John's will not be good enough for him to win the POY.

Good reminder.
So it's either gonna be Mayo or Burton then!

This is a good reminder. I had completely forgotten about this phenomenon. I also noticed that it has gone to a forward 10 of the last 12 years and 8 of the last 9. Hansborough and Foye were the last two guards to win it. Most of the players on my list are guards.
Hilliard and Pinkston are hella good players. But I don't think either will win it. There are simply too many good scoring options for Villanova. I think the scoring will be too balanced. I have georgetown as the 2nd best team in the conference next season and St. John's as the third. I think this sets the table for either DSR or Harrison.
you have more faith in St. John's than I do. i have them finishing around 6th yet again. Good back court, but suspect at 3-5 and more importantly at head coach.
