Option 3: Wojo
Option 4: Tony Bennett
Option 5: Ben Howland

Post by: Wojo'sMojo on May 12, 2014, 07:19:25 PM
Who would you choose to run the MU basketball program for the next 5 years if given a choice? College basketball coaching is such a fluid situation, I thought 5 years would be a good number to go with. Two months ago I would have picked Shaka, but have been less enamored the more that comes out with our pursuit of his services. Also, I have been thoroughly impressed with Wojo so far and went with him. The only drawback with Wojo for me is that he's from Duke  ;D

It's been a couple months, curious to see how posters were feeling now. What's lame is whinebags like you, who complain every chance they get about what someone posts. Guess what? Don't like it, view and move on...not too complicated.

I love the enthusiasm for Wojo, but the guy hasn't coached a single game yet. We need to wait five years (or so I have been told) before we can say we want him to coach for five years.

It has to be Bennett or Buzz. Both proven at the high major level.

Couple of months? Really?

Try one month and 12 days.

What's lame is a thread like this - when the poster has no clue how long it really has been - and it takes up valuable MUScoop space!

Well, I hope we're singing that song over the next few years. I'm getting tired of listening to people sing multiple versions of Dolly Parton's Jolene for the last ten plus years.

Personally, I am getting a little frustrated. The man has been on watch for longer than Christ wandered the Sinai and has yet to deliver a single win. It's time for him to start demonstrating some tangible results.

Agree and can you imagine if he loses any early game next year?

In reality I was not an early supporter but I have moved on. Wojo appears to have several qualities that will help MU on and off the court as MU strives to become a top 50 university. Buzz simply was not a good fit for that objective.

There has been lots of new info to come out since Wojo was hired, about many of the choices listed. Sorry I didn't mean to offend you and waste your time  ::) Maybe you could be my posting coach and guide me to what is or isn't ridiculous according to your guidelines.

This poll could serve a great purpose for Scoop if Wojo finds out and asks all of the Cameron Crazies to to vote for him.  Think of the benefits of expanding our reach.  Of course then ad revenues would probably be so high that Rocky, Spiral, SoCal & Hilltop would retire and we would "spiral" into a world of anarchy.  OMG, this poll could be the end of Scoop!!

Talking about posters without a clue, are you really calling MUScoop space valuable?

I seriously thought of voting for Buzz due to the benefits of continuity especially the class that was coming in.  Then I remembered the transfers we were going to lose and realized that buzz's time was going to be short anyway given how his and the administration's views of things were diverging.  I voted Shaka since in the magical world of this thread, Mrs. Smart would appreciate all Milwaukee had to offer.  I passed on Wojo even though I've been impressed because I just can't get past the feeling that he's just a heartbeat away from returning to Duke.

We have neither the time nor the inclination to explain ourselves to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom of speech Scoop provides, and then questions the manner in which Scoopers provide it. Are you saying that I'm questioning the "manner" in which Scoop provides freedom of speech?  Because I can't figure out where you got that from, if that's what you're saying.

All I thought I was doing was poking 77ncaachamps for something that he said that I didn't realize was sarcastic because he didn't use teal.

I doubt Tony Bennett will be Ryan's successor.  There isn't much love between the Bennetts and Ryan - in fact between the Bennetts and the UW.  Gard will likely be his chosen successor.

1. Built Washington St into a player in the Pac 12 and then revived UVA into a contender has proven he can coach at the highest level.

2. Has been successful with less resources than he would have at Marquette. Has had a lot of success. Sexy pick.

3. Buzz was successful while at Marquette. I hated him because he was annoying, but also because his teams were good.

4. Howland. He's an pretty boy, but he's a successful pretty boy.

5. Pretty much an unknown at this point.

6. Not enough experience I'd take a flyer on a high level assistant like you guys did, but not much separating him from Wojo at this point.

We could have had Tony Bennett if we wanted him back in 2008. There is a reason he was not offered the job. That reason still existed in 2014. He was never an option.

We may not have wanted him in 2008, but I'm fairly certain if we thought we had a chance to get him this year we would've thrown everything we could've at him.

I don't understand all of the Wojo love so far.  I mean don't get me wrong I'm a huge fan of what I've seen of him, love his attitude and think he's got some potential and a great pedigree.  But to say I'd choose him over a bunch of coaches that are proven to be big winners?  I mean come on guys I think a lot of those votes are just people supporting the new coach and saying FU to the coaches who turned us down.

I didn't even choose Wojo, but if you look at the list it's not hard to justify the choice with what we know now about the others.

- Bert - Clearly some clashing with the administration and trying to strong arm them, wanted to run his program his way regardless of what the University stands for, and that's not okay.
- Shaka - Apparently wanted to select his own boss, once again, could be a sign of some control issues, which again may not be in the best interest of the University.
- Bennet - Only real negative is his style of play.  Some people may be worried he leaves for UW, but it won't happen even without him coaching at Marquette, and it definitely wouldn't have happened if he had been the coach at Marquette.
- Howland - Despite a large number of coaching jobs open, Howland remains unemployed for the 2nd straight year, and this time he won't be making $2+ million while fly fishing.  Obviously there is some baggage that not a lot of schools want, so again, might not be in the best interest of the University.
- Wardle - More or less in the same boat as Wojo.  You could argue that he at least has head coaching experience, while you could also argue that at least Wojo has been a coach at a high major program before.  Both young and unproven.  We know how Wojo has kept the team together, whereas we'll never know if Warlde could've done that.
Wojo - From everything we've seen and heard, he's a classy, straight edged guy who is going to play by (the important/most of, at least) the rules and the players seem to really like him so far.  Kept all of the non-seniors around when Buzz wouldn't have.  Going after some very big name recruits and getting us back into the game with some big name recruits who we appeared to have no chance on (Ellenson in particular).

I think you are partially right.  Wades does a good job breaking down some of the issues with the other candidates, but undoubtedly his good start has got people excited for him.

However my guess is that he is like a highly rated freshman.  After his first bad game, the Scoop Collective will be saying things like "Man...I thought he was going to be better than this!!!"

I agree Wades does a great job of breaking everything down but lets say we'd hired Howland or Shaka (even with known control issues).  Somehow I think that Wojo would only have one or two votes in that alternative universe's poll.

There's also a huge scoop collective will also say they never truly thought he was going to be good then will be quoted by things from around now and a thread will turn into a big pi$$ing match.
