Christopherson out with knee injury

For the second time in as many weeks, the Marquette Golden Eagles have lost a member of their freshman class to a knee injury.

This time it's 6-foot-2 guard Scott Christopherson, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Saturday morning to repair a pre-exisiting injury to his meniscus.

Christopherson, a La Crosse Aquinas graduate, is expected to return at some point this season.

"We are shocked that he has been able to practice at the level he has," coach Tom Crean said in a statement.  "We are even more shocked he was able to perform at such a high level in high school. We felt surgery at this time was the best option for Scott, not only for this season, but his long-term future as well. His rehabilitation will be supervised by Jayd Grossman and the rest of our medical team and we look forward to his return this season."

Forward Trevor Mbakwe is out for the season with a ligament injury in his left knee, and will redshirt.

Christopherson will also have the option of redshirting if need be.

I'll have more on this tonight after the game.

Christopherson To Miss Extended Action Following Surgery

Milwaukee - Freshman guard Scott Christopherson of the Marquette University men's basketball team will miss an undetermined amount of time following knee surgery Saturday morning.

The LaCrosse, Wis., native underwent arthroscopic surgery to his right knee Saturday to repair a pre-existing injury to his meniscus. He will begin the rehabilitation process immediately and is expected to return in 2007-08.

"We are shocked that he has been able to practice at the level he has been," head coach Tom Crean said. "We are even more shocked he was able to perform at such a high level in high school.

"We felt surgery at this time was the best option for Scott, not only for this season, but his long-term future as well," Crean said. "His rehabilitation will be supervised by Jayd Grossman (Coordinator of Student-Athlete Performance) and the rest of our medical team and we look forward to his return this season."

Good grief,
Well at least we know Scott's fate this year...redshirt.  I think that üa the best option for him anyhow.

yikes i was expecting him to be a Novak type of 3 point spark plug off the bench. something tells me that whether or not he plays this season will depend on how well we are shooting the ball, along with how much time is left when he is ready to come back

I don't think this hurts all that much. He would have gotten limited minutes as it was, and he is a fairly one dimensional player. I always thought that he should redshirt, and unless he would be able to come back within a few weeks, I think he probably should.

man what is up with "pre-exisiting" knee conditions! i dont think SC would have contributed to much but it sure would have been nice to have that extra body...

I can't believe they would even consider not red shirting him.  Hopefully Tom meant to say he'll be back this season for practice.

Why would you red shirt him if say he could be back for the start of the BE season?? That's still a lot of the season to go. No point in red shirting him then IMO. Now if his rehab doesn't go well and he can't be back until say February or so, go ahead and red shirt, but to make that decision right now before he even goes through a lick of rehab would be completely foolish.

Wow, are we snake bitten.

The only possible good thing that can come of this .. remember the movie Word According to Garp?  Robin Williams and his wife are about to buy a house, nice neighborhood, yadda yadda, and as they finish their tour, blam, a small plane crashes into their house.

He says "WE'LL TAKE IT!" .. what?  Honey, the chances of another plane crashing into this house is astronomical!  This house is pre-disastered.

Hopefully, our season is pre-disastered.

I agree that that would be a concern, however sometimes there is just nothing you can do about that. Plus, Mbakwe and Christopherson would not be true freshmen, as they would have a year with the team under their belts.

Damn...I saw him like yesterday as I was getting out of the elevator.  He was holding crutches, like both in one hand...he wasn't USING them...I thought maybe he was getting them for TM or something...but damn dude, this sucks.

I saw him walking on the street with what looked like an X-ray envelope (guess it was MRI) but I figured it must have been a class project or something because he was moving so well.  Its bad news but I don't think this makes us snake bitten because it sounded like this was a pre-existing condition which the team probably knew about.  Meniscus injuries are quite tricky and it is interesting how they used the work "repair" because only a small fraction of meniscus tears are actually repairable and those that do heal 100% should be operated very soon after the injury.  Based on that there are probably 3 scenarios:

1) No Reshirt: They attempt to repair (low success rate this late) and it works allowing him to come back later on in the season

2) No Redshirt: They simply remove the material that is causing the inflammation and attempt to smooth the area

3) Probably a Redshirt: They attempt to repair and it does not heal resulting in a second surgery to clear the material and smooth the area

This impacts this team in many ways though Scott wasn't projected to be a heavy contributor this year:

1) One less person - after Trevor went down - on the bench. Depth is going to be important to this team especially when our guards get into foul trouble or we need a shooter.

2) This impacts recruiting for the position. I don't mind Scott sticking around, but the future clog at PG/SG is going to come one year early.
