...check out Marshall's.

Offer the job to Candidate A...he accepts.
A booster talks to the President and wants him to hire Candidate B.
They withdraw the offer to Candidate A while he is driving to Marshall.
They don't hire B, but negotiate with Candidate C who is just using them to leverage another offer.
They go back and offer the job to Candidate A who tells them to pound sand
They hire Candidate B.
What a f*ck up.
Bad enough that the title of the article is "Oh brother, what a ride MU took to find coach." But then there's this:
QuoteAnd that's when Thursday turned into "D-Day" for Marshall.
"D" as in Danny.
"D" as in D'Antoni.
"D" as in done deal.
Hooray, our coaching search has a cultural legacy? :-\
The curse of the MUs
MU, Golden Eagles, Done Deal, coaching search...yep, the story checks all the boxes.
I'd be thoroughly embarassed if I were a Thunderin' Herd alum after reading this...
"Underwood was more interested in the vacant Southern Miss job and apparently was using Marshall's job offer as leverage with Golden Eagles officials."
You missed a nuance to it...
1) Set sights on high-profile but unattainable coach
2) Offer the job to Candidate A...he accepts.
3) A booster talks to the President and wants him to hire Candidate B (unattainable Coach's brother)
4) They withdraw the offer to Candidate A while he is driving to Marshall.
5) They don't hire B, but negotiate with Candidate C who is just using them to leverage another offer.
6) They go back and offer the job to Candidate A who tells them to pound sand
7) They hire Candidate B.
and it took 41 days! MUScoop servers would have burned down the data center if that happened at Marquette.
Wow - screwed up on so many levels.
And don't forget, Mizzou (another MU, but I can't for the life of me figure out why) is still looking for a HC.

It seems like it worked out fine for the booster.

It begs the question why the Marshall servers haven't burned down.
Oh yeah, it's a football school first like VT.
