Wojo signs with CAA Sports.  Jimmy Sexton will represent, one of the most powerful figures in college sports

New Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski has signed with CAA Sports for representation.  Jimmy Sexton will be the lead agent for his affairs.

Sexton currently represents John Calipari, Erik Spoelstra, and Mike Anderson on the basketball side.  He is known more for his representation of college football coaches, including Alabama's Nick Saban, Auburn's Gus Malzahn, Florida State's Jimbo Fisher, UCLA's Jim Mora among others.

Sexton is considered one of the most powerful people in college sports as he represents some of the most sought out candidates in college football.  When college coaching football rumors are swirling, one of Sexton's guys is often mentioned as a candidate on the move.  He has been called "the SEC's true power broker."  Some cynics have argued that Sexton helps to seed those rumors to get better pay day for his clients.  At times, Sexton will represent multiple coaches for the same job opportunity which he leverages to the hilt.  Others, including many Athletic Directors, have generally high praise for Sexton's down home charm and personal relationship building, even if he just extracted a few million extra dollars from them.

Sexton has stated, "I always felt like the best negotiations are where you get what you want, but no one hates you for it."  Both sides feel good about the outcome.  His clients trust him and those he negotiates with (at least some) don't view him in an adversarial manner.  At the age of 20, Sexton convinced Reggie White to sign with him as his agent.

For Wojo to go from no representation at Duke to powerhouse agent like Sexton is interesting.  If one were to look at Sexton's client list of players and coaches in the NFL, NCAA football, NBA, etc, MU would likely rank near the bottom.  What does that mean for the future?  Well, not surprisingly if Wojo is successful, MU will be paying a lot of money to keep him around and I suspect more than a few rumors of his name being mentioned for other jobs.  It's how the coaching carousel game will be played.

First things first, he has to do well with MU or it doesn't particularly matter.

Ugggh, I am so tired of this, I hope it isn't more of the same with Wojo.

Well, with this guy as his agent, I doubt Wojo will be at MU more than 5 years before he moves on. Of course, he has to be successful to get considered for other jobs, which would be good for MU. Then again, Buzz had no agent and his name still kept getting mentioned for each job and he left after 6 years.

Looking at the coaches on this list and there aren't a lot that move around (except Bobby Petrino) from job to job. I know it's Scoop's way to assume the worst, but this seems like more of a formality than any ominous signs that Wojo's up to no good.

The future Head Men's Basketball Coach at Duke University deserves nothing less than the very best representation.

Not so much moving around, its the rumors of moving around that get the pay days.

Though I would argue plenty on his list have moved around as well.  Saban from Michigan State and LSU.  Parcells.  Calipari.  Petrino.  Spurrier.  Kiffin.  Etc, etc

He does it extremely well.  Not sure in the end that is a good thing for MU, but it is what it is.  If Wojo is good to very good, gone in 5 years.  If he is bad, gone in 5 years.

6 for Hank, 3 for Rick, 3 for Dukiet, 5 for KO, 5 for Deane, 9 for TC and 6 for Buzz.

5 good years of Wojo would be appreciated, and would be pretty close to MU's average tenure for coaches for the past 40 years.

What does an agent charge today? Buzz never had one and he did very well.  Besides the agent does all the dirty work and the coach stays clean.

The major agencies, like CAA or Endeavor etc, the rate is 10%.

Since Buzz did not have an agent sucking in 10%, did Buzz make an extra million over 5 years or did MU save a million?

A good agent would have talked him out of taking the sh## job that he left for.

Which for last season is more correct than saying he earned the money...

Well, our new Coach signing with an agent is interesting after he just dings a contract with MU.   Don't know it means but this agent takes coaches he knows he can make money with. He can make it renegotiating contracts at current gigs or new contracts at new gigs.

What is Marquette's reaction anticipated to be?

CAA negotiated Wojo's contract with MU, so they're probably OK with it.

Keep in mind that agents negotiate a lot more then just coaching contracts.  He may be use for endorsement deals etc.  I think Wojo has a leg up in this area versus Crean and Buzz.  If you look at some similar coaches as similar schools such as Jay Wright at Nova and Thompson at Georgetown, they both had good endorsement deals.  I think Wojo has a more engaging demeanor/personality for connecting to a brand.  This might be a good thing for MU if they can keep Wojo for awhile.

The importance is in who he has representing him.  That part isn't standard operating procedure.

I know the board likes the opportunity to jump off the cliff at times, but there is absolutely no guarantee that Wojo (or a former Duke player/coach) will get the opportunity to replace Coach K once he decides to retire.

When Bill Cowher decided to retire from the Steelers, after 15 years as head coach and a two Super Bowl appearances (one win), the candidates were two Steelers connections (Whisenhunt and Grimm) and an outside candidate (Tomlin).  Tomlin ended up being chosen.

When Denny Crum left Louisville, it was an A-list college head coach to replace him (Pitino), not a former assistant.

Heck, when John Wooden retired from UCLA, they hired Gene Bartow (who had no previous connections whatsoever to Wooden or UCLA) from Illinois of all places.

In other situations where big-time schools decided to hire a former player/assistant coach to replace a legendary head coach, it almost always ends in failure.  Matt Doherty (UNC), Mike Davis (Indiana), Craig Esherick (Georgetown), etc.

I would wager a guess that Duke will go after either Stevens or Smart for the position, once it opens up in 5 years.
