It is the best thing possible, if he decides he does not want to go to Duke, you think he would not put in a good word for Wojo?

Its business. I would hope Wojo would do the same to Coach K.
I saw him play earlier in the year against Stone and thought he got the better of him. Big upside.

Saw that game as well. they really did not match up much in that game. Ellenson was shooting a lot of threes and getting transition dunks, while Stone dominated inside on offense. Difference in game were the guards.
Inside Carolina also reporting that UNC is planning to start focusing heavily on Ellenson again

i think the closer reality is that if duke decides they don't want him, they might say MU is a really good option. other than MU being able to sell itself as closer to home...there's not much to sell that isn't going to be topped by duke with the coaching tree that we have.

Duke and UNC have to decide if they want him . He will likely pursue all the top schools to see what their interest is. If there is no traction he will pick amongst the lesser schools that have shown interest . If it gets to that point and he seeks a reference on Wojo he will get a positive one from K

There is a place in Rice Lake that has really great lefkes. It could be that this trip has nothing to do with Ellenson and that K just wants to check out the Norske Nook.

Are chicken enchiladas on the menu Monday night? Gonna be in town.
Jojo in MN tomorrow too.
The Norske Nook is well above average. Based out of a little town along the Interstate just south of
Eau Claire. Superb pies, and a pretty good menu other than that.
Think Ellenson could really blossom at the next level. Don't think he gets a ton of coaching in HS.

Osseo, Rice Lake, and Hayward.
I like our odds better with Ellenson with Wojo as our coach. I also like the Ellenson and Noskowiak seem to play very well together on their AAU team, especially since Noskowiak put us back at the top of his list.

While living in Asia we owned a lake house north of Spooner on the St. Croix - my wife from Thiensville's idea - and there was a Norske Nook there. I would head over to the Nook some mornings to plow through the Pioneer Press and Tribune over coffee.
Spooner is a Swedish town while Hayward is Norwegian (or vice versa) and I overheard these old Spooner guys talking about the Anderson kid dating a Norwegian girl from Hayward. It was as if he was soiling his family's reputation.
But you're right about the pies at the Nook. They looked incredible during the dinner shift. The morning pies were older and likely a bit stale with a much higher fat content.
Drag's Pizza is the place to go in Rice Lake.
Speaking of Ellenson I never liked him much. I'm not qualified but he thinks he's a guard when he's not, plays hero ball and hogs it. Then again he is a highly rated prospect so I wouldn't mind having him. Just never liked his game.

Seems like the dinner shift would generate a bigger tip from their guests, while the morning staff would receive just the tip.

Not sure where you get that Spooner is Norwegian. Pretty much a mix of many ethnicities from it's railroad days, including a fairly high percentage of Italian and Irish.

If he doesn't, do you turn on him before he coaches a game? Barring decommits, there currently are just not that many elite unsigned prospects. Or are you referring to a signing for a future class?
How is that possible? Coach K was just going to Rice Lake to tell Ellenson how great Wojo is. No way Duke offered.

No, I don't turn on him. If anything, I give people the benefit of the doubt. A coach needs about 3-5 years to be gauged accurately. Relationships take time to develop, so I'm anticipating a decent 2015 recruiting class. For some reason, I feel that a 5 star recruit will be nabbed by Wojo or a high 4 star. There isn't much left that he can do for 2014. Perhaps he can nab a juco, but I think he'll focus on retaining the current 2014 class.

I grew up in Spooner also and my senior year at Spooner High School the basketball team had 3 Johnson's and an Anderson. None of them were related and all of their parents had moved into the district from elsewhere.
I'm not sure where Henry Ellenson is leaning, but a Duke offer tells you the talent he has. Everyone knows his dad, John, graduated from Wisconsin while also playing a year at MU, but his mom's family has a UW connection since her brother played hockey at Wisconsin and her father coached hockey at both UW-Superior and UW-Eau Claire.

I'm not from WI but the wife is so she wanted a lake house to repair to while we were living in Asia. She was once back in the States on MS biz and took a side trip to see family in Thiensville and ended up buying a place north of Spooner off Hwy K. My first reaction was WTF but I grew to appreciate it. I loved hearing the loons at 5 am.
I remember a well beaten path to Dave's Hardware over the years. I recall he heard we were living in Hong Kong and he commented to me that my English was pretty good. I never bothered to correct his impression of my origins. I also used to buy fishing gear at Spooner Outlet. I remember the crew in Jakarta wanted Packer memorabilia so I had the Outlet FedEx a box of Packer coffee mugs to the GE office there.
As far as the "Andersen kid story" I overheard two old guys telling that story when I was at the Nook in Trego. I assumed they were from Trego or Spooner but who knows. But I did enjoy hitting the Nook. If my in-laws invaded while we were at the lake house I often retreated to the Nook for some peace and quiet. It was also where I picked up the newspaper.

John transferred specifically because of Bob Dukiet. He, and many other players couldn't stand the consistent negativity and ridicule they got on a daily basis. Dukiet set the program back a decade by the time he was finished. John finished his career at UW, and did a decent job as a player. His son would be a great player for Marquette.
Henry would be playing in a totally different program at Marquette compared to what his father was subjected to. Marquette is a great university with a much better campus. It is also on the national stage each year. Henry could help build something very special. Plus, he would be able to stay home while he does it. Great fit for Henry!

Chicos,
I've read many of your posts, but this one is the most absurd. Blame Rick's leaving for Dukiet's ineptness? Wow! That is just stupid! Dukiet didn't know how to recruit, coach or build relationships. The majority of his players hated him. Not dislike, but HATE! There were many potential coaches out there when Rick left, but Marquette decided on someone that was rarely successful, and he belittled everyone is his way. Pathetic that you would blame Rick who loved Marquette up until the day of his death!
Terrible post Chicos....just terrible!
Dukiet's last two years at St. Peters and his three years at Marquette:
1984–1985 St. Peter's 15–14
1985–1986 St. Peter's 16–12
1986–1987 Marquette 16–13
1987–1988 Marquette 10–18
1988–1989 Marquette 13–15
-----------------------------------------------
Kevin O'Neil came in and turned things around, but it took him a lot of hard work and several years:
1989-1990 Marquette 15–14
1990–1991 Marquette 11–18
1991–1992 Marquette 16–13
1992–1993 Marquette 20–8 6–4 NCAA 1st Round
1993–1994 Marquette 24–9 10–2
As bad as his record was, Dukiet's recruiting was much, much worse. Kevin O'Neil did a nice job of turning this around and pushing us back into the NCAA Tournament after several years.

Chicos,
I've read many of your posts, but this one is the most absurd.
Not to mention that most MU fans, boosters, alums at the time wanted Rick gone. MU fans got what they wanted, they just got it in June instead of April. Hank should have coached that 86-87 and done a national search in March of '87.
Blaming Rick for Dukiet's ineptness is like blaming Tom Crean for Buzz's "squirminess".
heard that Wally is not likely staying at MN...

You do know his brother is one of the best high jumpers in the country and a role player in basketball. So he focusing on the making the Olympics and not Gopher basketball.
Yes Rice Lake is 103 miles from Minneapolis. I guess you are slamming me because that is not "almost of suburb of Minneapolis" but MU being 332 miles from Rice Lake is "Henry staying home?" That was what I was responding to with that comment.
If Henry wants to "stay home" the Gophers are 100 miles away and Bucky and MU are 300 miles away.
Yes, Pitino felt compelled to publically deny there was a dispute - so there must be no dispute,,,

A couple of things about Marquette BB history. Rick Majerus loved the school and wanted to be the head basketball coach forever. He would have been a long term heir to the McGuire legacy. There were a couple of problems. Marquette's administration didn't have a clue about the changing face of college basketball and didn't really support Raymonds and Majerus in a way that would have kept things going. DePaul's games were going nationwide thanks to the WGN/Cable thing and the Big East was emerging.
Rick needed someone to guide him through the changes and help him grow as a head coach. Hank was powerless as an AD. Hank knew the Xs and Os but not the politics or the new recruiting challenges. Al was too busy with new ventures. Rick was pretty much alone and made some mistakes as he was growing into the job. His weight ballooned to a near deadly point. He was pushing players out of the program and that created bad PR. Check some of the articles in the old Milwaukee Journal.
Rick jumped to the Bucks as an assistant and in early summer many and quality coaches didn't want to take a new college position at that point. The word was also out that Marquette was not supporting the program at the same level as high profile schools. Al really had been pulling a rabbit out of his hat during his tenure because of the strength of his personality and being the right person at the right time, in the history of college basketball.
(Dukiet reached out to some female students in ways that should have gotten him fired early if it was known. His BB recruiting was done by assistants and most of what could be considered good blue chip level players were margin students who either could not get into school or were soon gone.)

So Dukiet was so bad for our program that he still might be hurting it decades later!!!
Yes, he was.

A very good and IIRC very accurate history of the time. The one thing that I would add is that Al McGuire's leaving was partly motivated by Al seeing changes coming that would make him less effective and Al deciding to get out while the getting was good.

Rice Lake is almost a suburb of Minneapolis. His brother goes to UofM.
If he wants to stay close to home .... Richard Pitino and the Gophers make more sense.
Only 2.5 hours away.

I agree with this analysis. Also I would add we were very fortunate to have Mr. Cords arrive when he did as I think he did a great job maneuvering us into the new age of college basketball.
The good news is since those dark years we have gone to a completely different level as an institution academically and athletically. I continue to believe that over the next 3-5 years the Big East will gain strength and our program will benefit from that rising tide. Wojo is in the right place at the right time.

Sorry but you misunderstood. Wally is staying at Minnesota. He just left the basketball team. He is one of the nation's top track and field athletes and wants to focus on that
I heard the opposite also, that he is looking to play basketball again somewhere else. Not sure how it will relate to Henry yet.

Milwaukee is considered a Chicago suburb, and that's 100 miles. Don't see why Rice Lake and Minny can't have the same relationship.

You are correct sir. It was the Bell, right off of 63. That was the turn for our place on the Namekagon. Although, to get to and from Spooner we took K.
The Nook was over in Hayward. The Nook had great pie but I always ate at home.
The Nook also is in Rice Lake and along Interstate 94 southeast of Eau Claire. I think in Altoona, but I may be wrong.
Rice Lake is no more a suburb of Minneapolis than Peoria is of Chicago. It's light years away.
Incidentally, that's my parents' homeland. Spent years of summers (and a few icy Christmas vacations) north of Spooner near a small town along U.S. 53. Craziest sight I ever saw was Bill Proxmire jogging in a blizzard near Superior in the early 1970s.

In hindsight Hank should have definitely been interim coach until the following spring. At the time though, no one really knew Dukiet would be the train wreck he turned out to be.

He should transfer to a SEC school like Florida, Arkansas or Texas A&M as they are very strong in track. He's a 7'3" high jumper, needs to get to 7' 7" to have a realistic shot at Rio in 2016. MN is not as strong in this area.
He needs to give up basketball.

Why not Villanova? They have an outstanding track & field program with lots of success.

I've been to the Nook in Rice Lake, too, which was my original lefkes post. I recall that first summer and meeting neighbors along the lake who were all vacationers. They each said they were from "the cities." At first I thought they wanted me to guess which one or, unfortunately, they were simply too ashamed to tell me what city and so they just left it ambiguous. After the 6th guy said "the cities" I realized they were all referring to Minneapolis-St. Paul.
i heard henry was offered by duke?? doesn't mean we still don't have a chance, I have a toothache? i'd say have coach sheshefski and wojo arm wrestle for him if it comes down to these 2 schools

Nope. East of Spooner. Nice quiet lake, with no public access. In the winter, guides fly out in small planes with skis on the wheels to land and fish the lake. That's the only way you can get on the lake if you aren't one of a few land owners.
