Title: Dead period
Post by: ATWizJr on April 09, 2014, 08:38:15 AM
Ends tomorrow, I believe.  Should we know something more about recruits shortly thereafter?

No, Tom, you are wrong. The Dead Period ended on 9 Aug 1995.

meh, maybe if you love noodling, different strokes

the Dead peaked by 1972 IMO and luckily for them for years 20-somethings still loved dropping acid

I saw them at Alpine in '85, the only show I ever walked out of in the middle but after 1.5 hours the fun of watching tripping dancers wore off but at least that entertained longer than the band did

Pre 72 was nice because there was no Donna and Pigpen was around, but I love the European tour of 74 and then 77 is my favorite year.

77-89 is my era for sure, 77-81 probably being the hottest out of those years. Brent replacing Donna and Keith (RIP) was the best move for the band. 77-81 Jerry really let loose and played a more fast paced rock guitar. Just my 2 cents.

There were some nice post 1980 moments as well.  The 1990 tour with Branford Marselis comes to mind.  I was living 6 blocks off Haight street on that crappy August day...

1991 was probably their last good year. After that, Jerry was never the same with his diabetes and drug addiction. The Uniondale NY 1990 show is a personal fav.

Phish has done all right. Trey is a poor man's Garcia.

I liked Jerry collaborations with Dave Grisman better than the Dead stuff

phish and the dead, while have similar to the same fan bases, are two totally different bands. The dead practically created a whole sub culture and carried it on for 30 years. IMO trey is a better guitar player, but jerry was coming from a totally different place.

I prefer String cheese incident over Phish any day.  Bobby played in Milwaukee a month ago it was a great time.  Can't wait to see Phil this summer at Interlocken.  Looking forward to bobby and phil playing back together next year.  RIP Jerry

Phil Lesh's contribution "Box of Rain" is my favorite Dead song.

Other than that, I guess I'm more of a Jerry guy. But its all good. I haven't listened to the Dead in a while, I guess I will have to on my way home from work tonight  :)

Another favorite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AX9Vhv4akxc

Back in my CPA days, Ben & Jerry's was one of my clients.  I was at their corporate offices in Vermont when they officially announced the name of their new flavor - Cherry Garcia.   Someone had to explain it to me.

One of my favorite spin offs was Bobby and the Midnites with Weir, Brent, Phonso Johnson, Matt Kelly from Kingfish, Bobby Cochran from Steppenwolf, Tim Bogert from Vasnilla Fudge, and one of my favorite drummers of all time - Billy Cobham. Saw thema couple times including their show in Ann Arbor that was their definitive live work.

I'm sold, Dan -- ipod's littered with Dead stuff. Just need to add more Dead to my guitar playing rotation.

Nice Jerry solo on a Dylan classic.

June 77 Winterland. Yes, Donna was there but a reggae-infused Estimated Prophet gave way to St Stephen not once but twice and landed 70 minutes later at Sugar Magnolia. Epic.

Check out this tour http://jerrygarcia.com/event/  It's a tribute to Jerry with Warren Haynes playing Wolf and a full orchestra backing him up.

I'm going to the Chicago show on May 20th and am expecting it to be insane

Wow, this thread has taken a totally different direction I didn't intend when I started it.  I blame you, Crash. As for the Dead, probably my age, but good music but a little too counter-culture for me.  Geezer personified.

They had a hell of a career considering the only solid studio albums were American Beauty and Workingman's Dead. I'm amazed how that was acceptable to deadheads, most other band's fans had higher expectations. Mybrother is one of you, buys all of the boxsets, who the heck needs the entire "72 European tour etc.?

Totally disagree with that statement. They had quite a few good studio albums. 11 of them went Gold or higher.

Wake of the Flood, Blues for Allah, Terrapin Station, and Shakedown Street were all good.

In the Dark was a commercial blockbuster (2x Platinum) but not my cup of tea.

Look, I get it, they are not everyone's favorite band. And sometimes its hard to understand the fanaticism of Deadheads and the cult around Jerry. But they definitely are not overrated.

Warren Haynes is one of the best guitarists of his generation. Here he is w/the Dead on Letterman 5 years ago:

slurper     ;)

but still, throwing out the throwaway In the Dark, those others are all still before 1978, kudos to the Dead for having a long $ucce$$ful career after that getting support from a fanbase that a good part weren't around/even born when they were actually still recording new material

I have a signed/framed print of the Blues for Allah cover I've wanted to sell for years if anyone is interested, ironic yes?

Nice to have a thread that is celebrating Brent the key board player rather than Brent the betrayer.

I currently live in Marin and see Phil all the time at his restaurant/music venue Terrapin Crossroads.  His kid's band is quite good.  Bobby has a music venue in Mill Valley, Sweetwater, that books fantastic acts.

Favorite MU player - David Boone
Favorite concert - Alpine Valley, summer '84, although a 1994 show in Vegas with Sting is a close 2nd.

Space to Dark Star was bomb.

I've been wanting to make my way to Terrapin Crossroads ever since it opened. It seems like there's a worthwhile show almost every night.

Keefe I know you mentioned The Band earlier. Fun fact, Phil's son Brian had a son of his own recently and named his Levon

Crossroads is definitely worth checking out. The Dead is associated with SF but they really set up shop in Marin.

I can never get enough of The Band. Their work remains relevant today.
