Title: What is the worst part of last season for you?
Post by: muhoopsfan6@yahoo.com on April 05, 2014, 04:02:42 PM
I feel bad for Gardner, I really think with a different coach he would have had an great chance at the NBA.

i liked him a lot as a college player, BUT, he never seemed to get himself in good enough shape to run with the big dogs and can't jump over a phone book.  could use him to shoot technicals though

Watching a point guard that should be in Division3', and a coach who was to stubborn to change

Personally, I'm going the opposite way on this one.  Gardner was lucky we took a chance on him and it worked out for both of us.  From what I've heard, he's already gained 20 lbs since the season ended.  If you look at his twitter page, he has a picture of a Chick Fillet menu that advertises " All you can eat nugget day".  Gardner's response is ....  "There is a God" .   lmao !!!  I did not make this up.  There is another food reference where there is a picture of those large cans of Arizona iced teas you get at the gas station.  They say 99 cents on them making them a decent buy for a gas station.  Gardner's response ... "I hope these stay a dollar forever".  For someone to tweet about food like that, implies that the man likes his food way too much.  MU kept this guy from hitting the 300 lb mark, and put up with him plateauing on his conditioning.  I'm hypothesizing that he has a food disorder of some sort (maybe just lack of discipline), and that's what held him back from being a conditioned, consistent terror inside.

Not tough enough,  did not block out, can not jump, could not defend, but had great hands, never learned to play D, will play in Europe

Mine starts in about 4 hours!

Actually it was just how lost the entire team seemed this year.  No one seemed to step up.  None of the underclassmen got any real minutes.  It was like a wasted year.

You're an idiot. The guy was a two-time Big East 6th man of the year. He's one of the more accomplished MU players in the last 25 years. He's not a legendary player, but far exceeded expectations and I cannot remember a bigger fan favorite...maybe Novak.

How many lbs have you put on since the end of the season?  I have heard it could be 25, do enlighten us

I find it ironic that your post count on Scoop in less than two weeks is more than Gardner's lifetime nugget count.  Making sure you're credited with a comment in every single topic on this forum does not give you bonus points amongst the residents.

While Gardner is all of those things, he left a lot on the table.  Unfortunately, food was not of them otherwise, he'd be an NBA draft pick.

For me, that all these kids are much better players than what they showed on the court.  It seemed like they were demoralized and up in their own heads, and had no guidance from their HC on how to work thmeselves out of it.  The leadership should have figured that this was something bigger than him and sought out help instead of "coaching" through it.

The game against St. John's in NYC was pretty bad.  However, I'll nominate the BET game when Derrick got hurt so Jamil was picked to shoot free throws for him.  We're down by 3 and need our senior leader to be clutch, and he misses both.  Oh Jamil.

Easy!

Failure of any of the seniors to assume the "give me the f-ing ball and get the he!! out of my way" leadership mentality.

Todd tried to assume this role, but Buzz didn't give him enough of a chance.

Weak backcourt, very inconsistent play, Jamil not playing to his potential, lack of leadership, and not one of Brent's better coaching years.

I'll go all the way back to the second half of the OSU game.  Tied at the half, to get blown out on your own floor where you were defending a 2 year + home winning streak.  That was really deflating and foreshadowed the season to come.

So, what what? Defense is now a big deal in the NBA? Defense Schmefense. The man has big hips. Big hips I tell you! There haven't been hips like those since that Dejuan character. Those are the hips of a professional. Hips like my sister Ruth. Of course Ruth never played basketball but she can make a great rugelach. And mandelbread. The kind you read about! And she married a CPA. But she does have big child rearing hips like this Gardner. The man doesn't play defense but who does these days?

1) Derrick playing 30+ minutes per game.  We all saw it; enough said.
2) No playing time for JJJ & ST when it was needed
3) Jake - same comment as Derrick
4) Mayo - Not enough PT
5) Player development - non existent this year
6) The shroud of secrecy as to why all of the above happened and no one (Homer) would ask the questions.

You clearly don't watch the NBA.  You also have to be athletic.  At 6'8" Gardner is a severely undersized PF.

Can't pinpoint exact worst part of the season.  Want to say Ohio State, when it became apparent we were going to have trouble scoring with DeWilson at the point.  I figured at the time that Buzz would work something out and lessen his minutes and we'd be OK.  So for me, the worst part of the season is that point when I realized that we were what we were and that the lineup we were using was always going to be the lineup.  Don't know exactly when that was, but had to be very early conference season.
