Title: No more ND v MU?
Post by: Chicos' Buzz Scandal Countdown on April 04, 2014, 08:56:57 AM
Now that Wojo is our coach, I wonder if this totally removes the possibility of scheduling ND as part of our non-conference moving forward as long as Brey is their HC.

No this will only increase the chances. This isn't like Coach K situation. It's been speculated that they could actually start up again due to this connection. From my understanding Brey recruited Wojo to Duke.

I thought Wojo said K wouldn't schedule with his assistants, but not sure two assistants wouldn't play against each other.  Given MU and ND's history, it would be unfortunate if that eliminates future games.

I don't think their relationship would hold this back...too much history. I would think ND not wanting the home & home would be a factor though.....

Correct, K won't play assistants only.

Nothing has been said about assistants not playing each other.

Remember, ND has played MU more than any other opponent in its history (Depual is number 2).

For MU, ND is number three, just few games behind DePaul (1) and Bucky (2)

It just makes too much sense to have an annual rivalry game between Marquette and Notre Dame at the United Center in Chicago - a spot where there are TONS of alumni for both schools.

The way both schools travel, I would not be shocked if they managed to sell out a game like that.

Love the idea but both schools would Make less money than a home/home.

Not sure it would sell out United Center. What could do that is a 4-team, 2-game night of basketball. Marquette, Notre Dame, Gonzaga and Dayton woudl draw a really large crowd.

Brey is on the short list for Cal job.

It is a one way relationship with Notre Dame. If it is in their interest they will schedule something with us. They are going to be on a downward trend in basketball for a while. Too many good teams in the ACC. So they are going to make sure their non conference is loaded with cupcakes. I think it is more about wins and losses than money. A Marquette ND is a big draw no matter where they play.

I would think Illinois or maybe Northwestern to grab the draw for the United Center.  Don't think Gonzaga is a big Chicago draw.

So MU loses home games in this deal.

I don't understand this argument.  Are you saying we schedule things that are not in our best interest?

If so, when are we playing an away game against UWM in the arena and going to GB?

Actually, ND is #2 behind Bucky

1) Wisconsin - 120 games (55-65)
2) Notre Dame - 119 games (38-81)
3) Depaul - 114 games (70-44)

No one else is over 100.

I love the idea of a 2 night 4 team event in the United Center each year.  I think MU, ND, and Illinois make too much sense not to include.  I think if you look at neighboring states that would draw and teams from other power confernces then Iowa St or Missouri make a ton of sense as the 4th team.  You could either have a tourney style where winners of night 1 games play each other and losers play or rotate or play the same 2 teams each year.  I'd love to see a format where MU/ND play each other in night 1 each year with Illinois vs. Missouri/Iowa St. in night one.  Then the winnners play each other and the losers play each other.  Big East vs. ACC and Big 10 vs. SEC/Big 12.

Well, as long as we keep playing DePaul twice a year and the others once or not at all, DePaul will be number one in a scant 7 years.   :D

I guess now that all of the involved parties from MU are gone, I can say this.

When the 2013-14 schedule was being put together, Larry Williams wanted to schedule a home/home with Notre Dame.  Buzz wanted it, and ND's athletic director wanted it as well.

The person who killed the deal: Mike Brey.  I heard this straight from the mouth of a very high-ranking member of our athletic department a year ago.

There will not be a MU/ND game until Brey changes his mind.

I wouldn't think there would be any problem Wojo playing Brey about Duke assistants.  I think Brey left Notre Dame around the time Wojo arrived as a player.

Not surprised.  Brey has zero wins in Milwaukee, including that glorious 26-point drubbing in 2008.

Brey was only an assistant at Duke for Wojo's freshman year, '94-'95.  Then he left in '95 to take the Delaware job.

The ND/MU series is far more historic and important than Brey or Wojo's feelings, and should be restarted immediately.

Unfortunately not true.  ND beat MU on Senior Day in OT in 2010.

Of course we only do things in our best interest and when we have the power we use it too.

I am saying that in the case of Marquette and ND, they perceive we need them more more than they need us. In the case you outline with UWM or GB it is the opposite,so in that case we treat them like ND treats us. For now the UW MU rivalry is good for both parties so we both embrace it.

ND is a very snobby place and they really don't want to be seen as being locked into a traditional rivalry with us , their schedule is hard enough as it is in the ACC they are looking for the same cupcakes we are. They did the same thing in football and kicked U of M out. It is just the way they are.

Illinois already plays Missouri in the Braggin' Rights game at Scottrade Center in St. Louis. It's been played at a neutral site (First the St. Louis Arena, then the Kiel/Saavis/Scottrade Center) in St. Louis every year since 1980.
