Title: Collecting the hardware under Crean
Post by: ChicosBailBonds on November 22, 2006, 01:10:27 PM
Milwaukee Classic Championships...6 times
Great Alaska Shootout Champions...twice  (knocked off Gonzaga, Indiana, South Carolina)
CBE Classic Champions (knocked off Duke)
CUSA Champions
Final Four

Not bad.

;D

But all we want now is the NCAA championship trophy! (to rest next to the one from 77!)

If James were to stay in school next year, I really think we are a top 5 team and would have a shot to win it all.  Not sure about this year.  But with James and the amigos all juniors next year, add Mkwabe down low....we would be sick good...absolutely sick.

Not bad at all!

One thing...I saw in some of the articles about the game talk of "raising a banner" for this title. Does this really warrant a banner in the Bradley Center along side those honoring the 1977 Championship and the 1974 and 2003 Final Four? I think the GAS banner is totally out of place and a CBE one would be even worse.

It depends.  If we had our own building I would say yes.  If you go to UNC's building or many others, there are banners for everything under the sun.  Then there are other schools like Indiana that only have the title banners (that I recall).

This team will continue to grow...I see no reason they cannot compete for a championship this year.

So long as we avoid injuries and the big guys continue to play well, the sky's the limit.  Personally, I think this is a more well-rounded team than we had in 2003.

Blasphemer!   ;)

Actually, someone made a similar point in another thread and someone called them out on it.  The 2003 team was a great team.  But, they almost didn't make it out of the first round, and needed OT to make it through the first weekend.  If Diener didn't average -- what was it? 27.5 ppg? -- the first weekend, we wouldn't be having these conversations.  Sure, the FF team was a great team, but this team could be great too.  I can't wait to watch the season unfold and find out.  If you have a great team, once you make it to the tournament, anything can happen.

"Beating Bobby Knight and Mike Krzyzewski -- to win validates our hard work," said Crean, who has averaged 20 wins in seven seasons at Marquette, including a Final Four berth in 2003. "To play against great coaches and great programs, to cut down the nets and be able to raise this championship banner at our arena will bring memories that will last forever."

I think Crean is allegorically referring to the whole CBE experience:
- Watching the first inductees into the College Basketball HOF in KC.
- Barely winning the first game, but coming back strong to thrash their next opponent
- Beating two legendary coaches and one revered team to win the championship
- Doing all of this with a relatively young and "inexperienced" team.
- The boys from Milwaukee listening to their coaches, working hard, and executing.

TC loves his banners.  I'd bet the farm we have a CBE Banner soon.

That being said...we need to re-do these banners.

1) 1974 should say Warriors just as '71 & '77 do.
2) 1974 should say Runner Up...losing a competitive game in the Nat'l Champ game is not the same as getting run off the floor by KU
3) We need to fix the conf banners.  We have one that in legal size type says 1994 GMC, 1997 CUSA and then a full size 2003.  Personally I think we should have 2 conf banners...one for real championships like 1994 & 2003 and one for tourney wins (1997)...to suggest 1997 and 2003 accomplished the same is ridiculous.
4) Match the colors...I like the new blue & gold but all should match one way or another.

And yes, I have a lot of time on my hands and I am a dork.

Let it go, we lost....the margin doesn't matter.  It was one of those games

Sorry Chicos.  We just did not lose.  First of, it was the championship game.  Second, it truly was close.  You are off base on this one, old buddy (from a guy that did experience all of that).

IMHO, MU with or without James should be a top 10 team next year.  With James, we should be definite National Championship contenders.  I see too much skill with Barro & Fitz as Sr, Wes & Jerl as Jr's, lil' Mo, Hayward & David as So's, and Mbakwe, Hazel, Saunders, & Scott as fr's.  I can see our team next year being better athan this team as I think we'll be more balanced and have more athleticism and skill at the big spots.

Our current prospects are bright, our future is very bright and with Nick Williams already committed for 2008, our future is brilliant!!

I think Chicos is talking about my KU comment.  Look I'm over it, I never hold that against TC, but I still think having 2003 say the same as 1974 is unfair.

Much the same way as I think having 2003 appear the same as my guy Deane-o's 1997 team.  I love Mike, but to say that 1997 accomplished the same in conference as 2003 is a joke.

A CBE banner is in the works.  They should have it done in time for the blue and gold classic.

We should go back over our record through the years and hang a banner for ever small tournament we've won since the program was started.

At a school with our tradition, the CBE tournament does not warrant a banner. If we insist on putting something up, find a way to include it on the banner mentioning the GAS titles and put all the school's minor tournament titles on there.

Agreed Nightmare.  If we're going to honor mini tourneys, then just stick them all on one banner.

do we have a banner hanging for winning the black coaches tournament wehn Diener was a senior?  Chocs failed to mention it and I do not recall seeing it.  I to beleive the 74 banner should reference runnersup.

It depends.  If we had our own building I would say yes.

We do have our own building.. the Al.. and that would be an excellent place for such a banner.. when future teams practice and see all of the banners for tournaments big and small they'll see the legacy and tradition they have to uphold.  They'll have motivation to get their own banners up alongside those great teams.
