I'm really looking forward to watching a coach who knows how to substitute players and allows them time to get into the rhythm of the game. Plus we'll run the Duke offense so we should score more efficiently in the half court.
Having the team properly execute in-bounds plays, especially out of timeouts.
He'll probably recruit more 3point shooters.
Buzz got a lot out of his teams, will be interesting to see if the D is more consistent in help d under Wojo.
Looking forward to guys being allowed to play without endless offense/defense substitutions. Also, being allowed to play through a mistake or two without fear of being instantly yanked.
Finally, looking forward to the end of embarrassing sideline antics from the head coach.
Less sweat.
The players won't all get migraines from the coach and his mini-me both constantly yelling to the point that they have no voice after every game.
Hopefully an effective straightforward defense that doesn't require more than a year for a player to master. Besides that, I hope the biggest difference is more reasonable player rotations.
I liked Buzz as a coach, and find it very hard to believe he tanked last season, but I will agree that he never quite figured out what to do with last year's roster.
We probably won't hear "This is our 727th day and 14 hours since I have been at MU", blah, blah, blah
More handprints.
I found yelling at guys when they're on d to be pretty effective. Keeps them focused and mindful imo. Liked that intensity.
I feel like there will be at least a little less turnover and he will better relate to the players being a young coach that has actually played at a high level before.
I think this will only help. Also, feel as though we will get more transparent comments from Wojo and less ego driven jibberish.
I liked Buzz and appreciate that he continued to steer Marquette in the right direction but his time has passed and I'm glad that he is gone. This whole new era has a very fresh, enthusiastic, and exciting feel to it. I can't wait for Wojo to hire assistants, hit the recruiting trail hard/see what transpires, and get next season started. It's early but I also think our players are going to love playing for him just based off of what past players have said about him.
How about a quick PG that can penetrate and dish the ball? Haven't had that since D.James. #pulloon
My hope is that he'll actually teach team defense, and how to properly close out on shooters.
I hope he breaks it down completely so the kids can digest it. Buzz got too cute with his variations on both man and zone looks.
Im hoping we will take more and make more threes. Buzz's teams seemed to get worse every year at shooting threes. It seemed to me like some guys almost had the yips, like Juan and derrick, where they would pass up wide open shots because the ball hadn't touched the paint yet, and always seemed to be nervous that the shot hadnt been "earned" enough or whatever. I hope doing that better will free up the middle and relieve some of the issues we saw this year, where we had exceptional offensive players down low but mediocre overall offense.

I watched Duke play 6 or 7 times this year. Their D was awful.

How much of that was scheme, and how much of it was personnel? Honest question, as I didn't study Duke all that much.
Only one of Buzz's teams at MU was an excellent defensive team, and that was 11-12. A lot of that had to do with creating turnovers. Personally, I wasn't a fan of his defense. It was so focused on denying a paint touch, that it allowed far too many open perimeter looks.

What about MU's? Was there a guard this season who didn't have a career game against MU?

Duke plays an aggressive man to man. They were consistently beat off the dribble (at multiple positions) in the games I watched. Maybe those McDonald's AAs weren't talented enough to guard the ball, but I doubt it.

Jabari's D this year was awful and got plenty of attention.
Someone that doesn't take 2+ years to figure out how to strategically use time outs.

I really did not watch Duke play this year, so you could be right on that, Lenny.
But over the years, when Duke was really at their best, they usually played great on ball defense by almost all their guys. I think that has been a hallmark for them.
Freshman will be given a fair chance to contribute. Our starting line up will make sense (Not starting Juan Anderson, Erik Williams, Reggie Smith, Joe Fulce, etc. for random games throughout the season). Players will shoot with confidence. We will probably flop a lot more.
I expect a more aggressive style of play...I also think the concept of paint touches will take a back seat. If you have an open look, take the open look.

this was also noted in the olympic games under coach k. and the players complained to the point that they finally changed it. i'll be interested to see what wojo does...he obviously stated he wanted to play pressure defense, but i hate how easily duke gets beat off the ball. that said, it leads to more possessions, turnovers, etc.
impossible to argue with coach k's success, but they've always had troubles with teams that could spread them out and attack the rim.
3 Point shooting. When we got embarrassed in games (Syr - Elite 8, NC S-16 several years ago) it was when teams shut down the lane and dared us to shoot from the outside we often completely collapsed. In current college BB nearly everybody on the team needs to be able to make an unchallenged 3. I hope that our guys become better shooters as they get to be upper classmen and I would hope that we recruit 1 or 2 pure shooters
Paint touches is a great general philosophy...turned into a side phrase because of how much buzz said it.... but paint touches lead to higher percentage shots, fouls, and kick outs. Wojo may not use the same phrase but I would hope he would stress dribble penetration.
From one single game I saw in person at the Bradley Center and a couple on TV either they couldn't score beyond the arc or just couldn't score. The team's biggest weakness was even when they had the outside shot working for them with Jake T and Mayo, they still didn't have an effective shooter in or near the paint. Lots of defensive lapses as well, especially lacking hustle on help. Buzz was sitting people down for that too, I thought appropriately since most of defense is hustle in the game applying the fundamentals learned in practice. Fear is another new factor for the existing players. The new guy didn't recruit any of them and will give his recruits every opportunity to play. That might just focus those guys to work out a little longer and harder this summer, especially on shooting and conditioning.
Still don't understand how Buzz became such an awful coach this year. He was terrible. Thank God he is gone. MU has the talent to be very good. Wino should be able to coach them up as individuals and as a team. Buzz clearly made the players look bad. He took away their confidence on offense to the point where they were afraid to shoot. Shooting is not a sin. Shooting is a good thing. Also glad we don't have to listen to Buzz's nonsensical chatter. Hopefully Wojo will speak the truth and be to the point.
probably install an offense before February...
