Title: Can he recruit?
Post by: downtown85 on April 01, 2014, 04:18:29 PM
Recruiting for Duke is not the same as recruiting for MU.  You need to go a bit off the beaten path to land the talent for our program-- to paraphrase Al, you go to the neighborhoods with "cracked sidewalks."  Will Wojo be able to maintain or upgrade our level of recruiting?

Just asking.

No, recruiting isn't like that anymore. It used to be that you judged players off of 20 games a year in HS. It's almost all AAU based now. And Wojo knows the people there.

Having a couple of recruited kids in our family, it comes down to the comfort level the parents have . Wojo, will do fine keeping the kids we have and the current recruits on NLI. Going forward he will learn that he has to set his sights in 4 stars instead of stars, and hope that he can land a big or two, which is something Buzz had difficulty with.

Maybe Coach K will feed us some of the crumbs he knows he won't be needing/utilizing.....wouldn't that be a nice deal  ;)

I have a friend very close to the Duke program and he says Wojo played a much larger role in recruiting specific players and in organizing Duke's overall recruiting strategies.  Don't be limited to what Rivals or Scout lists as the 'main' recruiter for some of Duke's big recruits.

Also, Wojo's role in development of players was not limited to the bigs.  Again, he played a much larger role than reported and there is a reason he had the 'associate' head coach title.  My friend thinks this is a great hire for MU.

If he keeps more than half the NLI guys for 2014, it will bode well.

Specifically, has he been on Ahmed Hill?  Does Hill know him?

He's a short, slightly overweight pollack that can't use Duke as leverage. In other words, he will be an average recruiter. No one went to Duke because of Wojo. That's an amusing thought.

Thanks for setting a new standard for stupid...and giving me a reason to hit the "ignore" button.

Buzz looked like Mr. Potato head with baked bean teeth and he certainly proved he could recruit. I remember doubting Buzz in the same way 6 years ago. With Wojo's rolodex, I think we should be fine.

Great question, one that some of us opined yesterday about.  At Duke, you basically are in the mix for all 5 star players, maybe a few 4 stars.  You target your 7 to 10 guys, you only get 3 or 4, but either way you are getting 5 star guys mostly.

At MU, we get 3 star guys and some 4's.  Will be interesting to see how he does when the pitch isn't "we're Duke".  Hoping like hell he can deliver in the time he will be here at MU (for however long that is).

Nate James (Duke) is the lead recruiter for Henry Ellenson and Diamond Stone

With Henry already having trimmed his list to 5; excluding MU. Ellenson might be too late

Also potentially starting from scratch with Diamond as it seemed him and Buzz connected

If Buzz's sixth year didn't revise that number, I don't know what will.

Wasn't their rumors of Stone's dad not liking Buzz?  Wondered if it was similar with Diamond.

The head coach certainly matters when it comes to recruiting, but who he hires as assistants will matter quite a bit also because it's often those assistants who have to form the initial bonds with kids for the head coach to later close the deal on.
