Title: Assistant Coaches
Post by: Litehouse on April 01, 2014, 03:11:53 PM
Any ideas who Wojo calls?  Maybe Jon Harris still wants to come back without Cuonzo.

I'll toss out a name .... Trajan Langdon.
Former backcourt mate ... no coaching experience, but works as an advance scout for the San Antonio Spurs, which is a fantastic organization with great coaches. Of course, I'm not sure working as a college assistant is a step up from what he's doing now.

Really hope he tries to get someone with a Marquette pedigree

There's a rising star in Va Tech's program, Brent Williams. You'd have to think the head coach of VT moving to an assistant position at MU would be no worse than a lateral move.

I could see Jerry sticking around, having a grizzled vet on staff might help a rookie coach.

Any chance the former assistants stick around? Or, make a clean break? I'm guessing the latter but didn't know if the administration liked the assistants at all.

I thought they were all gone except Jerry, he's the only one left on the website.

They're all gone except for Wainwright, who I don't think is a lock to stay, he just agreed to hang around during the transition.

I'm embarrassed that I laughed at this.

Is the Va. Tech job considered better or worse than New Orleans?

He's clearly botched his assistant search already.  Coach K said no, plus he leaked our embarrassment at being turned down in his press conference!

Well instant local connection to his fellow Alaskan Derrick Wilson, plus his middle name is Shaka so I assume it's a done deal.

They were let go out of deference to the new coach. Didn't know if they could be re-hired. Much like our incoming class is being re-recruited.

I think hes a lock now. He wasn't when Mu was looking at other heads.

Mark Miller, from @WisBBearbook tweeted out that former Dukie Chris Carawell could be a potential add, don't know how much credence he has, just thought i'd ass this to the discussion

Why?  What has he done?  I don't remember our game coaching improving at all when he joined.  We need some young guys who can really get after it in the Chicago recruiting circuit.   Picking up a guy with NY or Philly roots wouldn't be bad either since its BE territory.

I heard someone suggest Jason Williams.  Don't think he'd leave tv but would be a solid add that recruits would know of.

A veteran coach would be nice to have with a first time head coach. Not saying it necessarily has to be JW. Also want the young guys for recruiting too. Just assing my two cents.

Chew is going to VT with Brent, he will take a pretty good pay cut from what I hear. Autry?

Bonnie Bernstein would approve of that hire.

Thought I read that their entire assistant budget was less than what Chew made at MU.

He likely burned some bridges coming to MU right?  Wasnt he on the IL staff at the time he accepted?

Wainwright, I believe, is well liked by the players.  He also has a rep as being good with bigs.
And well... team photos.

He was at Illinois for less than 2 months, after coming there from Missouri.

Side thought about our departed asst coaches.  I believe in some long buried thread someone mentioned that on their way out Buzzard's Bunch were digging through recruiting files in the basketball offices.
If they did take anything, couldn't they be charged with theft of intellectual property - ultimately settled with a non-compete or other non-criminal settlement?
I'm not a lawyer, but I watch a lot of Maury and see the ads.
